Default Umar Akmal

Does anyone else think it's an absolute travesty that this kid is being kept out of the test side and a regular ODI spot?

He might take a little bit of time to find the consistency in test matches that he's had in domestic FC cricket but his talent is far ahead of many youngsters of today's cricket and i think Pakistan are making a huge mistake by constantly leaving him out of the test side. it's not like he did poorly in his early test run either.

less similarly but still questionable is the way he's being managed in ODI cricket, he's done a fine job in ODIs and for some reason was dropped and was only recalled on the basis of now playing as a wicket keeper batsman and not a pure batsmen when he warrants selection of his previous ODI exploits as a pure batsman.

during a time where Pakistani cricket is having trouble finding consistent players and talented players, this kid is right in front of them, he's proven domestically, he's proven internationally yet they still question him and don't back him.

even if you leave test cricket out of the discussion, why will they only pick him in the shorter formats as a keeper batsman? he's clearly a quality ODI batsman, he should be in the team regardless of whether he keeps wicket or doesn't.

He suffered a seizure in the Caribbean on the plane between Islands during CPL. Not even sure if he will play cricket anytime soon. Heard it's some epilepsy thing not sure.

that's rough for the kid, epilepsy can be tough to deal with. but he's been kept out of the test side for quite awhile and he was brought back into ODIs as a keeper before he had these medical issues, so what was the reasoning for how they managed him before these medical things came to light? reckon if they had stuck with him over the last couple of years then he'd have been a consistent test performer by now.

Even though he hasn't quite done justice to his talent, the team management and selectors have also misused him. He mostly bats down the order as one of the last specialist batsmen in ODIs and doesn't bat in Tests. He should be batting up the order for both formats as he's a quality player and especially at a time where Pakistan is looking for quality young batsmen.

although i agree he hasn't justified his talent he's still done very well in ODIs, an average of 38 (not that far off 39) after 76 matches is really good in ODIs and he's still only 23. even a quality player like sangakkara has only just brought his ODI average near to the 40 mark (now 39.99 but for many years he was around 36-38 range). agree he should bat a bit higher, he's proved to be reliable and as you said pakistan are looking for quality young batsmen.

as far as tests go, it's like i said, had they stuck with him all this time he probably would be averaging over 40 by now, still his average is 35 which isn't that bad.

strange, i just don't get why they haven't supported him.

Agreed. His averages are good for such a young player. I remember the comparisons between him and Kohli when they first came in. Now you can see how Kohli bloomed compared to Akmal. Younis Khan blamed it on the quality of the senior players compared to India. Kohli got to hang around the likes of Tendulkar, Dravid, Laxman. Also Imran Khan blamed it on Pakistan's poor domestic setup compared to India which is why their batsmen are not as good. You can also see why we struggle as well since we lack senior leadership and domestic structure although its improving slowly.

Anyways, hope Akmal turns out to be a great batsman for Pakistan for crickets sake. He's a wonderful talent and can be great if he can put his mind to it and the management backs him
