Default Quality of selection

I was just thinking whether our selection process of picking our national team is getting better or not. In 2002 when I was in Bangladesh I wrote a article in daily star(then I was not a BC member, I also found the article in a old thread(http://banglacricket.com/alochona/vi...ad.php?tid=647) over here where 1 of the members, SHubho was also wanting to publish his article) about the problems in our selection process. The article was:

First of all, I would like the Bangladesh selectors to remember that they are selecting an international Test match team. They cannot only pick players whom they feel are good enough or on the basis of a single domestic tournament. Past records, experience and consistent form for at least one season are imperative and should be considered.
They picked young Anwar Hossain for the first Test in place of Al Shahriar who was the highest run scorer in South Africa because of Anwar Hossain's good batting form in the recent Challenge Trophy.
Chief selector Alliul Islam also told that they wanted to see whether anybody else could also play in the opening position. So, they should have given chance to Ehsanul or Javed Omar who are specialised opening batsmen rather than Anwar who has negligible experience of opening the batting, and if I do remember he batted at number ten below Mashrafee Bin Murtaza in the A team's tour of India.
Also the batting order was criticised by experts. Everyone felt that No. 3 position, which is the most responsible position, should have been given to Habibul Bashar or any experienced player rather than Mohammad Ashraful, who should bat at No 5 or 6.
I was also very sad to see Naimur Rahman bowling economically rather than bowling to take wickets. But I was very impressed to see the two pacers bowl their heart out. Though Aminul Islam did not get too many runs but he looked quite comfortable at the crease.
The selectors should not only consider the youngsters but also older players like Akram Khan whose experience would help the team in many ways. I would like to advise the selectors not to bring about wholesale changes other than bringing Al-Shahriar or Javed back in the fold and give Anwar a chance to prepare himself to be a fully Test player for future. Best of luck to Bangladesh in the second Test!

Now I think our selection p-rocess is lot better compared to then because of peaople like Athar Ali Khan but we still have problems for reasons like lack of quality players( have to recall players), inconsistency and selectors ignoring domestic performance. (Al Sahariar). Do you think our selction has gotten better?:

Awesome topic cricketboy. This topic has largely been ignored in this forum. Yeah, there are some flaws in selection process. One of our selector, Faruk Ahmed is the all in all in the selection process.

Insiders know how political he can become to establish and maintain his prowess within the board.

It's time to bring in people like Nannu, Bulbul, Akram Khan and player of such calibres into the selection process. Another person, I beleive will add value to the who process is Sujon (guys, don't curse me. This guy really has so yellow material on the top)

I am sure, lot of insiders, if there is any in this forum will agree with me.

I think it has improved, one main reason behind it is selectors are paid and they are able to give much more time to the game.
But i think its time we start making a written selection process, about what should be the form ,level of experience of the player to be selected

Nannu is also biased, and i think bringing players like akram and sujon who are still playing is not a good idea, they might prefer the one's from his team,as faruq has done with rajin.
But chacha can be a great selector after he leaves cricket

Good observation shark.

I believe it's time for Bangladesh cricket to get out of the monopolistic realm of some individuals.

No it was never ignored. Maybe you came in late, or never noticed.

why fix something that is not broken? judging strictly from the selection process that has been in play over the last couple of tours, it doesn't seem like politics is anymore a major issue in selecting a squad nowadays. so i don't understand why we should drop faruk and bring in someone else. isn't dropping people every now and then bad selection?

Well, I am not talking about taking Faruk off the scene...There should be more transparency and there should more character to beef up the Selection process. One man show is cannot do any good to anything.

This thread is more interesting than the other thread just opened - the one about political motivation.

I think the selection process has made a lot of progress. We have to remember, there can only be 11 players in the team playing.

However, transperancy never hurts. We would like to make progress as fast as we can. But, in the end, as long as the selectors are more than reasonably competant, more or less fair, allow the coach and captain to provide feedback, which in turn is acted upon, the chaos that transperancy brings, may not be fully desired.

The reality is, different governments will do things differently. Yes, I mourned the change from Mr. Saber to the current individuals, but hopefully I will mourn there changes too. In the end, we will have established all the right basics, its just that the delivery system may have changed.

And I doubt it will change that easily. In Bangladesh players 'image' is also an important factor... Hence you hear Javed as a 'test cricketer', Ashraful as 'talented', Akram as 'Old', Rokon 'Given too many chances' etc. etc. Moreover, the players almost gives us hope to be recalled after not being selected for 3-4 series. And you find, Mohd. Selim, Mazharul, Ehsan etc. players slowly fades away....

Then again, the selection is much better now, I agree. Selection is and was not always about facts and objectivity at this part of the world...After all we have to draw the line between us and Australia/England, right?

I don't think the selectors know how to usher in players from National league to National team. This is my hunch because the level of observation and analysis( of the matches at premier league) that we get (very few) from selectors is quite rudimentary. Also, the status of HP team vis a vis the National team is far too difuse for my liking. It is'nt only about the individual selectors (who may be sincere and knowledgeable and competent) , it is a general lack of leadership and also maturity of the whole system.

Something that I have voiced before is my satisfaction with the selectors. I have only ever been disgruntled with their performance when they excluded Al-Sahariar from the preliminary squad. He doesn't need to be selected for the national team, but spending a few weeks training with the national team will surely refine your skills and give you motivation to try hard to push for a place. Selectors could have let Al-Sahahriar know that they have him in mind but that it will take consistent top performances to get a place.
