The T20 Discussion thread
The purpose of this thread is talk about our T20 cricket. Yes we have been discussing it in different threads for a while now but I thought it might be a bit more interesting to talk about it in one place . As T20 world cup approaches, I think we will be discussing this more often so why not now?
The fact that some of us gets goosebumps at the thought of Bangladesh having to play qualifier against Afghanistan, Ireland, UAE, Netherlands is a big enough reason to open a thread for itself. I am not being ignorant about these teams by many teams but its clear that some of these sides sure have a better grip on this format than we do. But where talent is concerned, there is no doubt that we have it plenty and more than any of these sides.
So whats going wrong? What needs to be fixed? What can be done to improve our records in this format?
Share your concerns, observations, ideas, strategies.... and not just throw in names which is what most of us are doing these days (me included)

for a start pick players who can accelerate the strike (playing proper cricket shots) at any given time from start to finish if need be. 2nd you need batsmen who can rotate the strike so if a boundary isn't there then you can still score runs, this means we can't take players that pre-meditate to much because that will result in less runs.
bowlers need to be able to at least cull the run rate if not do so and take wickets whilst doing so.
select players who are good fielders, saving runs can really help in t20s more than the other formats.
that's a basic outline for how selection should go imo. we may not have 11 players that can fulfil those roles perfectly all the time but we need to find the ones that can do it most often.
there isn't much else you can do other than that, in t20s strategy pretty much comes down to the players out in the middle at the specific time. you can plan strategies in the locker room but most often things won't pan out as planned so players need to be ready and capable of playing to the situation, being calm and figuring out what needs to be done at that time.
i think the best batsmen we have at changing gears currently are probably nasir, mushy and shamsur. they can all accelerate at any time, they can pull it back, they can score in boundaries or in 1s and 2s or do both at once and they're all pretty calm players. shakib and tamim but be good boundary hitters and yes they can score the 1s and 2s but their mentality gets in the way, they just want to hit boundaries so they don't really think about the 1s and 2s or play to the situation, they are more than capable of doing so but they struggle with their minds and that is something they need to work on.
anamul might not have good technique but he probably has a good mentality for t20s because he knows how to think about a situation and execute, the only problem with him is he tends to struggle to score early on which is tough to swallow in a t20 and certainly not ideal. naeem is another possibility, the new naeem is much better at changing gears and reading a situation and playing to it. riyad could be useful but he needs to get his batting together, he can't be handing the strike over in t20s, he a much to capable bat for that, and we can't have him hanging back because unlike naeem he doesn't really recover his strike rate from it. shabbir, his bowling could be useful and so could his big hitting but how consistently can he do it? and can he score those 1s and 2s? what's nazmus sadat like? i know he's a pretty big hitter, he's useful with the ball in shorter formats to, is he worth a look at?
i think zia is a big no no in this format unless he is there as a bowler. he just wastes to many balls. i don't care if he gets 50 off 30 balls, he's likely wasted 15-20 balls of those 30 he faced but completely missing them going for a big slog, that could have been another 15-20 runs if he had got some singles or two's.

right now the biggest problem i see with ourselves is the pacing of the innings. We need players in the middle order to play like Hodge or Watson and not like Afridi. Players like Mushy and Shakib can take a bit of time and back themselves to stay till the end and finish the game off ala Dhoni. Last T-20 against NZ... Mushy and Naeem launched an amazing attack and had brought the run rate down to 9 at one stage. I felt at that point Mushy could have waited a bit to hit out in the last 5 overs.

Oppositions scores for last 6 matches,
178 (Pakistan, chasing the total at a rate of 9.53 per over)
197 (West Indies, First Innings at a rate of 9.85 per over)
198 (Sri Lanka, First innings at a rate of 9.90 per over)
168 (Zimbabwe, First Innings at a rate of 8.40 per over)
134 (Zimbabwe, Second Innings at a rate of 6.70 per over)
204 (New Zealand, First Innings at a rate of 10.20 per over)
For all these matches, Bangladesh was fairly close to the scores but managed to win only 1 of them against Zimbabwe.
So, all matches lost because of the bowlers. The totals were simply too high in most of the games for us to chase them. Yes, there were errors while batting as well but you cant simply blame the batsmen for not being able to chase down scores at a rate of 9+ runs per over.
The bowlers bowled too many short deliveries, full tosses, down the leg side. Bowlers had no plans to handle the batsmen.
If Bangladesh won all those games, it would have been an outstanding effort by the batsmen but unfortunately the opposition had better bowlers
When I watch our bowlers bowl in T20s i always think they bowl without any clear plan. This is something they have to work on. I don’t mean planning beforehand because you cant do that for T20 cricket. But the bowlers should try to read the batsman better and setup fielding accordingly. It might not work but that’s when the bowler has to come up with another plan and simply keep trying.
Maybe the bowlers are planning. But its not showing in the game and it seems like the plans aren’t changing when they fail.

We need to bowl differently in T20. May be we need spcialized bowler for T20 instead of over loading our young bolwers aksing them to play all three formats before letting them settle at any format first.

I dont think we have any specialized T20 bowler in our current pool.... the seniors has to take some responsibility to master this format better

Need a different set of players for t20 probably based on their performance in bpl. And not pick players based on performance in test and odi. Not all players are good in every format most players are specialised in just one format. Also maybe take pressure of mushfik and make some one else captain mushi can still be vice captain.

Afghanistan have some real mighty hitters. And their pacers won't be easy to handle but we should still win against them.
Ireland have good batsmen upfront, but not much power lower down the order. Porterfield, Stirling and Kevin will be their key batsmen.
Haven't watched UAE play but Netherlands don't look as strong as they were before. Is Ryan playing these days?

I think we should take some risk with our T20 side, its not like that everything is going well for us in this format
Our main players in this format are Mushy,Shakib and Nasir and may be to a lesser extent Tamim, one thing is for sure that if these 4 fails then Mullah/Zia etc wont win us the game batting in number 7. Thats why we need to experiment in that position, Number 7 is a valuable batting position in T20 game

I would disagree.... If the game is undecided when no.7 walks in for a t20 game, the situation would be very difficult and it would take an exceptional effort to rescue that game. Bangladesh should be looking for a firing opening pair that would kickstart followed by someone in no.3 that can score at a constant rate. But for now, our batting is fine. We need a bowler that can keep it tight during the powerplay overs and another bowler that can keep it under 10 per over in the end

As long as Riyad is coming in at 5/6/7, we will not set big scores or chase big totals.

According to DailyStar, there will be a T20 tournament after the DPL. It'll likely be the top 60 players who will be divided in to four different zones.

if you want a steady, strong #3 who can play to the situation then mushy is probably your man. though i'd be interested in trying anamul at #3 in t20s with tamim and shamsur opening.

this is nothing but a "lok dekhano" preparation "effort" by BCB. If they were really determined to prepare for the WC, they would have arranged an away tour of at least 5 T20 matches. These mohollar tournaments are only gonna create possibilities for domestic bullies to make a comeback

I was thinking about Anamul too. Mushfiq ofcourse would be the perfect candidate for no.3 but he and nasir are the only ones that can find gaps later in the innings.
But if not Anamul than I would put Shakib at no.3. He is far from steady but he has great chemistry with Tamim which creates opportunities for a steady partnership

i reckon shamsur has great attributes and skills to be a good #3 in any format but then we need him to open unless we open with anamul. shakib seems like a good idea at #3 but he's a bit to hot headed.

Its the bowling. We got no plan whatsoever. Come out and start bowling length balls. Need some stratgey to minimize belting. Then we got a sniff of overcoming humiliation.

Can anyone tell me which are the teams in group A that we need to face for the qualifier in next T20 WC ? I found the fixture really confusing.

wikipedia says we have Netherlands,Nepal and UAE in our group, i dont know how authentic wiki is though..to be honest i'll be surprised if this is true..afg and ireland should have been in two groups..if this grouping is true i dont think Zim can make it out of the group stage with both ireland and afg in their group, we on the other hand if cant get pass then we should stop playing cricket. period

That's total bs. Don't rely on wikipedia. A lot of times it wrong because people can change it.
I think we'll get a clearer picture in a few days
