Default Why Bangladesh party could be last hurrah for cricket's minnows

By Jonathan Liew, Chittagong

Quote:

From the air, Bangladesh looks a pretty unpromising place. Tin-roofed slum houses stud the horizon like tiles in a mosaic; mangroves wilt under a hot and heavy sun. But at street level, it teems with life and throbs with colour.

The faces of Mushfiqur Rahim and Tamim Iqbal beam from 60ft billboards at the roadside; every lamp-post is festooned in World Twenty20 placards bearing the slogan “Catch it if you can”; any patch of bare ground is good for a game. It is here, and not in the quiet side streets of St John’s Wood or the air-conditioned corridors of Dubai, that the soul of modern cricket most faithfully resides.

..............

The Bangladeshi government has spent around £40 million on hosting it, a princely sum in a nation where most people survive on less than £2 a day. Factories have been shut and shops told to close early in order to avoid power cuts at the stadiums. Tickets, some as cheap as 50 taka (39p), sold out within days of going on sale. This will be a tournament for everyone.

...............

With money now set to flow upwards, so will the game’s fulcrum. Countries like Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe are already struggling to pay their players enough to keep them interested. Meanwhile, it is not impossible that Bangladesh’s first global tournament as sole host will also be their last. If this seems overly melodramatic, then consider the venues of the next five scheduled ICC tournaments: Australia, India, England, Australia and India. And all this because Misbah-ul-Haq failed to clear short fine leg.

.................

They create revenue that outstrips that by far.

Which portion?

The article was lamenting the fact that the big powers have hijacked cricket from where its soul is into a money making racket.

i agree what writer wanted to say, that money is now being the main factor on whether one would be able to host a global competition or not. I just i didn't like the tone of the writer where he mentioned how much money govt has spend for this tournament and how govt told people to stop mills and factories which i doubt true at all. Considering the money we loose regularly due to corruption its nothing even if consider the tournament as economically flop. Like i said it was inappropriate reaction. i guess i was angry.

That part was true - about mills and factories. Many were told to reduce hours and were also not going to receive natural gas during this time so that the national grid can be kept powered up.

And the 40mil sounds about right.

Regardless, the author wasn't begrudging any of that. Surprising that you got riled up by the most innocuous part of the story.

Yeah, this could very well be the only global tournament we hold in a while. I hope we can finish it properly without any more hitch like the national grid failure, stone throwing at team buses etc.

Cricket will die everywhere other than maybe in the 3 Bigs. The 5 that voted yes has to bear quite a bit of responsibility for this. Only one more NO was needed. BCB did not surprise me. We all knew that they will be bought. SA really surprised me!

I think cricket will continue the way it is for now.

But T20 will be the game of future...the money making machine - considering China and USA getting involve in the future...

Money can buy almost anything, but not fans in the stadium.

How often you will see so many fans watching a game between Ireland and Netherland where host nation is not playing?

and btw it was indeed an excellent game.

And all this because Misbah-ul-Haq failed to clear short fine leg.

What's that supposed to mean?

I think the author implied that had Pak beat Ind in that final, the big 3 wouldn't happen. I fail to see the connection as well.

I think IPL happened because of ICL and Lalit Modi. BCCI just couldn't sit in the sideline and watch ICL make money.

IPL happened because India became T20 champ back in 2007. India became champion because Misbah failed to clear the fine leg boundary while playing a scoop and score the necessary few runs in the last over. That's what the writer was saying in the last line there. Get it now?

The author is implying that India did not take T20s seriously until they won the first WT20 in 2007 and that led to the T20 revolution and creation of the monster that is the IPL. India were very reluctant and among the last to jump on the T20 bandwagon but 2007 changed it around.

I would be happy if you are correct on this. Obviously.

But, I am afraid that the greedy Big 3 is taking most of the money will slowly begin to affect the other nations and throttle expansion.
