Ijaz skeptical about prowess as PCB names U19 team for SL

ISLAMABAD: As the selectors announced the under-19 team for the Sri Lanka tour, coach Ijaz Ahmed was a bit concerned over the strength of the junior team in wake of the domestic competition that was participated mostly by overage players.

“All the overage players who are playing in the domestic under-19 competition are not a part of the national team. We have got with us players genuinely under the age of nineteen. However, in the on-going tournament, the players who have already been declared overage participated and their performance was much better than the players we have got.”

The former Test cricketer said he was carrying along a weak outfit but hopefully with the exposure and competition they would get in Sri Lanka, would help it emerge as a better outfit.

Here are scorecards and stats from BD-SL series in April this year-

Both of the Test matches were drawn. After losing the first ODI, BD boys won the ODI series 4-1.

A bit on Azeem Ghuman, the Paki captain, from PakPassion -

Quote:
"You could say I'm not your usual Pakistani batsman because a lot of the boys in domestic cricket rely on front froot strokes, but my strength is my back foot shots. I really lilke to cut and pull and I dont rely on just my front foot shots."

I hope Abul and others won't feed him short pitched stuff.

What the hell is wrong with BCB?

What do they think of the U-19 kids? Animals or something?

They've been playing cricket continuously for last 3/4 months. They must be given some rests after this series. At least 2 weeks.

Well, this series is too important to miss out. The mistake they made was to make England series too long (7 ODIs) and then add another five matches against Zimbabwe after that. It would have been better if they had curtailed two ODIs from each series.

Last time around they made the same mistake by cramming the WC prep with matches against Nepal. Result was that the team did not go beyond QF stage.

The Pakistanis should be destroyed. Sri Lanka will be tough in their home grounds.

I'm more worried about Sri Lanka's bowlers.

Well, they have beaten SL already, and they should play well against Pakistan. The boys are in good form, they may be tired, but have played good cricket. They will have at least a week of rest to recuperate.

Is it too much cricket for the boys or it's OK?

Well said, Eshen bhai. They could have make these series for 5 and 3 ODIs.

I hope it will not be the same this time. BCB should understand that these kids are not Animals. They should be treated as human and kids. Some of these players are 14/15 yrs old.

Too much of anything is not good.

Personally I don't believe in reducing games because we are playing too many games.

If indeed that is the case, then BCB should use the bigger pool of players and rotate them to keep them fresh before the WC.
