Default Al-Shahriar back in Business

Experienced top-order batsman Al-Shahriar earned a recall to the national team's primary camp yesterday as a reward for his brilliant form in the ongoing Ispahani Mirzapore Tea National Cricket League. The tall right-hander, who scored 683 runs in 15 Tests at an average of 22.77, joined the camp of Dav Whatmore yesterday morning that raised the number of players to 18 from 17.

"We needed another batsman in the camp and that's why we considered Al-Shahriar," said Bangladesh coach Whatmore while talking to The daily Star Sport yesterday night.

Al-Shahriar scored highest 328 runs in five first-class matches this season at 46.85. When asked whether Al-Shahriar would be a part of the team to tour Namibia and Zimbabwe later this month, Whatmore said everybody in the camp had equal chances.

"Even the ones now touring Pakistan with the A team are also under our consideration," said Whatmore who is also a member of the four-member selection committee led by former Bangladesh captain Faruque Ahmed. Al-Shahriar last played for the country during the tour of Australia in August last year.

I'd love to see Al Shahriar back to national squad. He is a real stroke maker but pretty much inconsistant. I wish him all the best.

Al Shahriar was pretty good in tests but sucked in ODI.

They should have dropped him from the ODI and kept in tests. I have no idea why the selectors simply dropped him from the whole team.

The real sad thing is that 99% of his runs came in 2002... over 600... he was the highest run scorer for Bangladesh for that year.

I hope they don't make him open again, which he is not , and that i believe led to his eventual exit from the team. he is one of our best strokemakers, no doubt, but in the middle order. If he can consistently perform, it will only be a great news for us. I wish him luck and maybe he learnt his lesson. That shot he played in the world cup ( can't remember which game ) to get himself out was one of utter ignorance relative to the situation and irresponsible to the core for a senior member of the team. But, then again, nobody really did anything in the world cup.

If killing was not a crime, then I would kill Whatmore if he plays him in the ODI team again.

As for him playing in test cricket, I don't mind at all.

Ok - what I said above, its involved with lots of strong emotions. Now let me talk some logic here.

The papers said that they had wanted another batsman so they had called him in. Lets see, how many batsman did we have in our 17 member team?

1. Hannan Sarkar (when we have such a confident player like Hannan Sarkar in our team, I don't know why we need a make-shift opener like Al Shahriar in the side)

2. Shahriar Hossain (may be he's the reason that Al Shahriar is called back? And also the absence of injured Javed Omar? We need a test match opener, and for a test match opener, Al Shahriar seemed to do pretty well, so why not?)

3. Habibul Bashar (I wonder if Al Shahriar is capable of being our next Habibul Bashar, we certainly know that he has the ability)

4. Rajin Saleh
5. Mohammad Ashraful
6. Alok Kapali

7. Ehsanul Haque (probably won't play in tests, if chosen ulimtately, he also hasn't proved himself as a batsman yet)

8. Mushfiqur Rahman (has batted in the middle order during the last England series, and also probably will bat in the middle order in the coming Zimbabwe tour)

So we have already got 8 batsman, among which 6 will definitely play in tests (Hannan, Bashar, Rajin, Ashraful, Mushfique, Alok).

So are the team management thinking of Al Shahriar as a Test Specialist Opener only? The only valid logical reason behind taking him into the national camp seems to be just that.

Like I said, it is the most logical assumption that I could have behind this incident, and it won't be such a good idea if what I think is right, to continue with him opening in the One Dayers, even if he scores some useful runs in the opening position in tests.

fwullah
nicely put!
I agree with you on the point that the team mangement might want him to play as the other opener with hannan, which will be a mistake. he was never an opener. aliul the genius persisted with him in the opening slot. he is a middle order and thats where his talent lies. Middle orders are pretty set anyway with bashar, rajin, ash, alok and mushfiq. so, its between him and biddut or he could be the reserve in case someone falters or gets injured.

I think we all know someone, no make it all of them, in the middle order will falter in a big way. So Rokon will be in the squad no later than the second test, and hopefully in the middle order. And we would actually rather have an in-form ROkon than ehsanul, moniruzzaman, mazharul, etc - everyone except maybe tushar imran. that is, from the senior players who are available, the kids are playing the WC and you never know if those century scorers in the BD league are really any good. Rokon was a safe choice at backup middle order.

I still don't get why the master strokermaker can't play one day cricket.- or is it just our perception?

Default he is good no doubt but we need a dependable and reliable batsman

I undisputedly one of best stroke maker till the emergence of the new recent players..and also scored the highest runs in 2002 in domestic cricket..but we have to remember our team needs a middle order or even a top order who can construct a good foundation of the innings rather than playing some great strokes for 30 runs or so. We already saw what's the result for us..we need to change our game plan..like even yesterday how the game plan changed when Youhana got out...Inzi and moin rebuild the foundation ...and Razzaq tried to finish it up by playing an aggressive innings...
as we see in Intern'l events, a batsman is trained to not only give individual best performances but also to play according to the team's game plan. So, if Youhana plays a good knock, Inzi remains quiet or vice versa. If evrything collapse Moin, Razzaq or Azhar takes the duties of rebuilding. Even we saw how the zimb tail orders rebuilded their innings and playing some great innings.

This is same frm Aussies, India, SA, WI, Eng and evrybody.

If Shahriar gets back in the ODI team then he should come in 5 or 6 and has to play a similar role as what Abdul Razzaq does for Pakistan. i.e. to accelerate the run rate and then only he will be accepted.

And on another note, nowadays Rajin also seems no good, just a good pak tour, thats all and he is fused now. I wonder what has happened to this guy.
