Programme

A two-hour, 15 minute-long ceremony.

The function will begin with a welcome song by Bangladeshi composer Ibrar Tipu, followed by Sonu Nigam's rendition of his self-composed English song "Rise for glory" that will welcome the captains of all the participating teams in the stadium.

Cricket captains to ride rickshaws to World Cup opening
Dhaka, Feb 16 (IANS)

The rickshaw, the common man's traditional transport in Bangladesh, will occupy the centre stage in Thursday’s Cricket World Cup opening ceremony here. The captains of all participating teams will make a grand entry into a packed Bangabandhu Stadium riding these humble vehicles.

“The rickshaw is our traditional transport. It is a part of Bangladesh’s heritage. So, we want to present it before the guests. All 14 skippers will enter the stadium in rickshaws,” tournament director for Bangladesh Ali Ahsan Babu told IANS.

Babu said the rickshaws will be brightly decorated and colourful.“Our rickshaws are known for their multi-colours. We will also present before the guests aesthetically designed rickshaws. There will be bright illumination so that the skippers are all visible from even the galleries,” said Babu.

He said the rickshaw portion will be the first of the five-part inaugural ceremony that will showcase the culture of the three tournament co-hosts - India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
Singers Shankar, Ehsan and Loy will also feature in the Indian part of the programme.
The Bangladesh presentation would include the war of liberation, excerpts from a famous speech of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the country’s founding father.

Bangladesh’s language movement that saw the martyrdom of three students for the sake of their mother tongue would also be depicted besides the tribal dances of Chakmas, Rakaines, Marmas, Shautals and Garos.

The Bengali New year would also be brought alive through song, dance and visual effects, he said.

A saleout crowd of 25,000 will cheer every moment of the 135-minute programme.
“We had printed a total of 10,000 tickets of three denominations - 1,000, 10,000 and 20,000 takas. All the tickets were exhausted within a short time. The rest 15,000 include some complimentaries and some given to the government

Forecast showed it is going to rain. Will that ruin everything or is there a backup plan?

Thanks Nadim.

Really disappointed with UK TVs. SKY is not showing this LIVE. I just checked the TV guides for all UK TV channels, none are showing this. ATN is broadcasting this throughout the world, EXCEPT for UK and IRELAND .. as if UK boycotted this ceremony for some reason!

Ya, I failed. I was hoping that no one would give me a GMT. That's why I asked, "how long" in hope that people would just give me the "hours left" info.

All three nation artists participate but full responsibility of BCB. So BCB can take full credit for pulling off this event magnificently.

Ah, ok. Well who hired the Indian and Sri Lankan artists? Was that BCB's job too?

I am gonna go ahead and bet the closing ceremony (if there is any, never saw one in cricket) will be huge, with BCCI able to hire all the big star bollywood people and make it colorful. Now I feel bad for BCB, not enough money to hire big stars. Bryan Adams? Where is the new emo when I need it..

here it is..

Cricket World Cup: Dhaka ready for opening ceremony

The $30m (£18.6m) opening ceremony to kick off the Cricket World Cup gets under way later on Thursday in the Bangladesh capital Dhaka.
Jointly organised by the International Cricket Council and the Bangladesh Cricket Board, it will be opened by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Dhaka's Bangabandhu National Stadium, not used for any World Cup matches, will be the venue for the ceremony.
The more modern Mirpur and Chittagong will host eight matches between them.
The often chaotic Dhaka roads witnessed relatively light traffic on Thursday with the government declaring a half-day public holiday so its people could return home in good time to view the opening ceremony on television.
It is the first time the country, which is slowly making a mark in world one-day cricket if not the five-day Test version, has helped stage the showpiece event which begins on Saturday, with the final on 2 April.
The country, with a population of more than 160 million, is jointly hosting with India and Sri Lanka and thoroughly enjoying its rare moment in the sporting spotlight.
Bangladesh Cricket Board president Mostafa Kamal said: "We will be able to improve our image if we can successfully hold the opening ceremony and host the World Cup matches slated for us."
