Elias Sunny's unique record
Mohammad Isam
July 19, 2012

Elias Sunny, the Bangladesh left-arm spinner, has become the first player to be named Man of the Match on debut in two formats, after winning the award in the first Twenty20 against Ireland on Wednesday. Sunny was also the Man of the Match in his first Test, against West Indies last October.

"Sunny made his Test debut after picking up 203 wickets in seven years of first-class cricket - the most for a Bangladesh bowler before a Test debut. "

SEVEN YEARS. Finally, a normal amount of time is allowed to pass before inducting a player into the national team! Gone are the days (hopefully) of throwing 17-year-olds into the bullring before they've even emerged from puberty! Time to order up proper, experienced first-class cricketers for the natinoal team, please!

Thats mainly because of our team getting better and better with time. However im not happy with Abul-cr*p playing matches after matches with nazmul warming the bench. Abul is worse than the vinay kumar and nehra...

Actually i dont mind playing Abul against teams like Zimbabwe' and Ireland. Since these kids are picked, We need to give them exposure somehow and should not throw them in front of G8s. Playing them against those teams won't hurt much but they will get valuable experience. But I would definitely not pick those Abul type players (young players) to begin with. I want them to go through the process Sunny did..

Abul was one of the main reasons we got kicked out of the U19 WC a couple of years ago. Yet, he's in the national team today, chucking pies. What's going on Shane?

To be fair, I can't blame the selectors for having Abul in there. He was 1 of the top wicket takers in the DPL. Also in the U19 level he had an average in the teens. We have to blame the fact that our pace department is just that depleted, where we have to include a young guy like Abul. I won't defend the fact that he's getting chances over Nazmul but I can understand why he's in the team.

so just because he performed in 1 tournament he deserves to play for Bangladesh? and what did he do in BPL?

ANS: Crap, so crap that he bowled 3 no-balls in an over, such class

So why don't you name some guys that deserve to be there ahead of Abul since it seems you know better then me about the pool of pacers.

The answer is right there in the dug out. Is Abul really better than Nazmul?

Nope and I am not defending the decision of having Abul over Nazmul because Nazmul is the better bowler and should be playing. I'm just saying that due to the fact that we have very few pacers in our setup, Abul is getting in to the 15. If Rubel was healthy, I doubt he would've been there. People need to understand that we don't have world class pacers sitting around and we have to do our best with the guys we have. That's why we see that Anamul was sent back to the junior team while Abul wasn't. Why? Because our batting department has more depth than our pace department. Nothing we can do about this problem unless we build some quality pace academies.

abul is there purely for his pace, if rubel wasn't injured he would still be on the fringes but not in the team. nazmul should be playing no doubt, but mash hasn't done any better than abul, has more experience but this is t20s.

The answer for producing quicks is to have a specialist coach come in and head up an independent pace academy.

There is no other solution and it's something I have been saying the entire time.

It doesn't affect the work the main national bowling coach does with the team because this is producing and developing talent across the board and at all levels.

With regard to Nazmul's omission, I am sick to the stomach for him for being overlooked. I know he just shrugs his shoulders and gets on with it, but with so little resources available, how many more series, seasons and tournaments does he have to sit out?

Just dumb

Well written piece as usual, but lacking in reporting skills as always. Assuming he was there at the match or was in telephonic contact with someone who was, would it have killed him to put a little context behind Sunny's wickets? At least any interestingly presented description of his wicket taking deliveries in light of the match conditions and situation would have made the piece really worthy of CI, often packed with great description of the relevant details in the middle. Details that can actually contextualize the stats and transform a good writer from cricket polemicist to a real cricket reporter.

Pyachal par'ha and wallowing in the ability to articulate one's opinion are way easier than the hard work of actually watching the game closely, taking detailed notes and reporting the action in order to put badly needed context behind the numbers. A passion for such details coupled with the passion for the language makes a really professional cricket journalist. CI is full of them but sadly almost none of them are from Bangladesh, a test playing nation. Hence Andrew Miller remains "our" best out there.

My vote is for you to be one. You seem to have a lot of in depth knowledge (don't know how) on local players and their style of play. Your writing skill is good if not better than the journos out there. But I am sure you wouldn't take the job since the money is not there and there lies the reason for the lack of interest and quality of sports journalist coming out of our country. I don't think passion fills one's stomach.

seems like he was brought into the national team at just the right time, performing from day one, it's awesome to have another wicket-taking match winning spinner alongside shakib. i mean razzak is ok in the shorter formats but in tests we have been lacking another good wickt-taking spinner and i think we've found it in sunny.

To me it makes no sense to give him a chance when he is still so young. If he had performed in BPL, that would be satisfactory enough but he didnt play enough, neither did he bowl brilliantly so at the end of the day its simple our selectors dragging in youngsters into a side and in the process giving a negative message to our cricket: If you are young and show glimpse of promise you will be given a chance ahead of your seniors.

Thanks for the nice words but I can't do it. I've been under contract to do other things for a while now and am certainly not a reporter. I can't even go to domestic matches as much as I used to be able to, let alone doing that full time. Money has nothing to with any of it, because I don't really have to work anymore to live a relatively comfortable life, but time does and what I choose to do with that time. I've worked hard enough since age 15 until I started doing my own labor-of-love thing 5 years ago at age 40. Bangladesh cricket is a major passion I have, but I'm simply not young enough to do the necessary legwork.

Besides, as BC goes, nobody and I mean NOBODY comes even close to Razab's quality and class.

Anyway, Md. Isam is the ideal candidate to take Bangladeshi cricket writing to the next level if he wants to. He is a passionate, knowledgeable and skilled young professional sports writer with great connections. He's also a competitive cricketer and that always enhances one's potential because of the added insight. He has a clear understanding of what he's witnessing in the middle and has the language skills to describe that in interesting ways. In fact, the only great cricket report with interesting and accurate description of key game action I've read in a local newspaper was written by him. Sadly, that report on a match against Zimbabwe as far as I can recall now, is an exception when its kind needs to be the norm.

I just hope my constructive suggestions help him not only what he can be, but what we need him to be. We badly need context and only real reporting can help us out.

I respectfully disagree. As the Emerson in me would say:
Quote:

Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.
May be the "we" was in general because your weighty response surely doesn't reflect my opinion. And I think however insignificant guys like me can be, our opinions matter.

I for one, don't "need him" to be something or somebody. I am happy where he is and how he carries his business is totally up to him.

Sure he's an ambassador, but he is not koler putul either and he should set a standard that HE deems is right.

Sunny is slowly establishing himself as our number 1 spinner. This is a fantastic, because it will only drive Shakib and Razzak to try harder.
