Default What went wrong at Trentbride? A bit of sole searching

I am sure a lot of BD fans like me a bit dumb founded by the display of BD team at Trentbridge. Only two days before that we took on the best in the world and beat them so convincingly!

Yesterday it did not look like it was the same team that beat Austrillia. Some of my work colleagues say that it all boils down to experience. But is it really as simple as that?

I know there is a number of threads running in parallel on the failings in that match but I wish to look at the other aspects of the game - pshycological/mental preparation, desire to win and willingness to set higher standards.

If it was other teams like Pakistan, India etc. surely after beating the world champs they would bounce back. But this does not appear to be the case with BD - WHY?

The Aussies didn't attack our bowling as intensely as the English. Bashar was also not imaginative enough to rotate his bowlers or set traps in the field and ask his bowlers to land the ball at a particular spot consistently. Hopefully he and our bowlers will learn from heir mistakes. I would strongly recommend them to watch how Wasim Akram used to bowl when the opposition came attacking.

England is becoming unbeatable. They beat Australia, I think they can beat any team now so Bangladesh as inexperienced team consisting of young players is very easy for them. It's not really BD's fault.

However, I think we could have had a better result if our bowlers bowled better. Also selection of bowlers was wrong by Bashar. We should have restricted England to 300.

Our batting in contrary was poor at the start and after Ash's dismissal. We shouldn't have lost 2 wickets in a row TWICE. IF only Ash could play a little longer, or at least Bashar and JO made it to the 40th over with 215 runs, there would be a bright chance of scoring another 80-85 runs in the last 10 overs.

So our problems are poor and weak bowling against England. English players are used to playing all sorts of bowling paces, techniques and the English pitches/conditions. BD's bowling is like a piece of cake to them. We lose wickets one after another. There should be a space and every batsmen should score at least 20 runs before getting out. Easier said than done but it HAS to be done if we want to improve and win matches.

Stop putting your team down guys!

They are playing against arguably the two best cricket teams in the world at the moment and still managing to put in some good performances. England may only be 6th in the ODI rankings but that has more to do with lack of one day experience than a dearth of talent.

Look at Ashraful's innings yesterday, sure he got some huge slices of luck and on another day might have been bowled, yorked or caught, but look at what he managed to achieve. There are not many batsman in the world that would manage to hit Tremlett and Harmison out of the ground whether the two bowlers were bowling at their best or not.

It may look bad after last night but I don't see how the future can be anything but bright for Bangladeshi cricket.

you can't expect to win every game against world champions 1 and 2. But our bowling and captaincy was pathetic which was taken full advantage of by an explosive England batting. Our batting however is not the same as before. We are fighting and fighting well. BanglaBir probably didn't watch the game. After Ash left aftab got out unluckily and things started to fall as we ran out of wickets, overs and hope.

I think BD team deserves lot of credit for the Batting. I wish Aftab could stay and play some of his shots. Nafees, Tushar, and Ashraful could do better.

For bowling, captaincy can be blamed. Since BD's bowling mostly don't cause much offense to the opponents, the captain needs to learn techniques on how to manage them better. Do they offer any training course on that?

I still am proud of our TIgers. Keep roaring.....

Ashraful smashed 94 from 52 while others (except JO) dissapointed big time:

Shahriar Nafees 10 played 28 balls
Tushar Imran 0 played 1 ball
Aftab Ahmed 0 played 1 ball
Khaled Mashud 8 played 12 balls
Mashrafe Mortaza 0 played 8 balls
Tapash Baisya 3 played 6 balls

You konw it is so nice to see BD fans so faithfull to their team. I have read all the comments above and it stirs up my emotion to be proud of our team.

Don't get me wrong which I am. But surely to allow an opposition (no matter how strong they are) to score such big total makes me wonder if BD players hearts and minds were in the right place.

This is my first reading (thread) about Bangladesh's match yesterday, so I don't know what others had to say on other threads.

I didn't watch major part of Bangladesh's bowling against Australia after 20 overs onwards, but I did see the whole match against England yesterday, and what I have gathered is that:

*Having watched Bangladesh's test series in England so far, and also the first ODi match agaisnt England, It was only a matter of time that we would concede something in the region of above 300 in the 50 over games - such poor has been our bowling. It was just a mere chance and probably very poor batting by Australia that we did not concede 300 runs against Australia.

*My guess is that Tapash has been suffering from some sort of injury throughout this series and the absence of other specialist pace bowlers, or lack of experience, skill of other specialist bowlers that had forced us to play Tapash time and again, even knowing that he has been suffering from the following technical flaws including injury:

- Bowling no balls in every over
- Running down the pitch in almost every spell
- May be, has lack of match practice, though I'm not sure about that

What Tapash needs right now is to spend full 1 week with a specialist fast bowling coach (not Dav Whatmore, who cannot afford to spend a full day only on one specialist bowler's techniques during the middle of a tour) to sort out his technical problems - if he's NOT suffering from injury

But since he's already in the team, and we also don't have any other pace bowler to replace Tapash straight away, so we have no choice but to include him in the last match against England.

Also, the fact that he took 3 wickets to contribute to win against Australia - played a major role in continuing with him.

Now when all our bowlers including Nazmul Hossain and Anwar Hossain has been punished like hell even by off-form Australian batting line up (not to mention England), Tapash has double-trouble with having to adjust his techniques to not to running down the pitch, not to bowl so many no-balls etc. (Nazmul also went for a few runs in the match against Australia).

*I'm wondering why we are not getting penalized for not completing our bowling 50 overs within the stipulated time (I'm sure that we had to take a 30-minute extra time to complete bowling 50 overs yesterday) - we SHOULD BE, but its not Bashar's fault that Tapash had to re-bowl so many of his no-balls!

I am finding it hard to accept the word "convincingly" in that sentence. It was a great, great, great victory. It was convincing in the sense that we convinced ourself that we are capable of beating any team in the world but the margin of victory was no way convincing.

As for why did we loose? Well, here are a couple reasons that I can think of:

1. We have no idea how to get the English batsman out.
We have not been able to get them all out once, test of ODI.
2. The English has become almost unbeatable in their turf.
They have not lost too many games at home against anybody.

They are going after our bowlers and our bowlers are taking that beating. The message the English batsman have sent repeatedly to our bowlers are "you guys are worthless" and we have not been able to respond to it. I would say when they were playing aginst the English their confidence was very very high and after a few overs it was 20% and close to 0 when they were done bowling 50 overs. If the Aussis send that message successfully in the first few overs of the next game it will be over. I think it is becoming critical for our bowlers to overcome this mental block against the English. I would suggest that our bowlers go and study these batsman and figure out a strategy for the English batsman and execute it on the ground. Whatever strategy we have isn't working, unless it is part of the strategy to give the English batsman a false feeling of our bowling attack and then press them hard in the last match.

For reason #2 above, all you can do is fight hard and create some winning conditions and I am sure some one will step up to the plate.

I agree with your strategy but what do you think of Aftab taking an wicket (you know who - someone (English) went for a duck yesterday - hee hee)? Surely the English are not as invincible as they look?

They are not, but they beleive they are invincible against us and our bowlers started to beleive that also.

england is not invincible. the thing is that they are playing in their familiar conditions. and it is easy for them to blast our 2nd rate pacers apart from mashrafi. i would have liked shahadat, he couldnt do worse than nazmul or taposh. besides in ODIs he would have some fielders in defensive positions.

but i think the key to england is to vary the pace. Bd has to do something different straight away, maybe start with a spinner. I am sure england openers wont have it that easy then. keep changing bowlers and dont let the batsmen get a hang of the bowler.
