Pichchi Hannan with 4 operatives shoot through 40-member strong Rab team after trading 150 shots
Five most wanted criminals shot their way through a 40-member strong elite anticrime force Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) early yesterday in Uttara in Dhaka, leaving two law enforcers and one criminal wounded.
Law enforcers arrested five people, including a Jubo League leader in the wake of the fierce firefight marked by an exchange of at least 150 shots in the first frontal engagement by Rab since its launch on April 14.
The gang led by notorious criminal Pichchi Hannan opened fire, when the house they were using as a den was surrounded by the Rab team.
Hannan on the run for the last two and a half years with 11 cases pending against him was holding a secret meeting at house No. 2 on Khaja Garib-e-Newaz Avenue in Uttara Sector 11 Thursday night.
Tipped off, the Rab members hemmed in the house at around 12:30am yesterday. As they knocked on the door, the criminals opened the door to find the law enforcers.
Without a second thought, the gang fired from pistols which caught the Rab members off guard, sending them ducking for shelter. The criminals dashed into a car parked in front of the house and tried to drive away.
As the criminals wheeled away, the Rab members opened fire which was returned by the gang. A tyre of the car was ruptured by a bullet, but the gangsters kept driving with the flat tyre.
Major Hafiz, leader of the Rab team, chased the car on foot, shooting from his shotgun. After a chase about 100 yards down the road, Hafiz found himself abandoned by his colleagues.
Unnerved by this discovery, Hafiz gave up on his chase and the criminals sped away into the night.
The Rab team later raided the area and caught five people, such as Babul Mia, a Jubo League leader and close associate of Hannan, Shakil, Shafique, Mostafizur and Rafique.
Shakil wounded in the gunfight and the two injured Rab members were admitted to the Combined Military Hospital.
A few minutes after the shootout, a police patrol reached the scene. High police officials also visited the area. It was later found that the house the criminals used is a garment buying house.

Hmm... Major Hafiz for team manager? Obviously the man is tenacious. I also can't recall anyone above the rank of Patrol Inspector in Dhaka who could actually sprint a hundred yards down a street. What's with the shot gun. Give the man a M-16 already.

Most Wanted Criminal of BD captured!
RAB arrests Pichchi Hannan
The Rapid Action Battalion arrested Pichchi Hannan at a clinic in Savar Saturday evening, less than 40 hours after the most-wanted criminal was wounded in a shootout with the elite force at Uttara early Friday.
A 20-member RAB team cordoned of Al-Insaf Clinic at Sripur at about 6:00pm and arrested Hannan, one of the 23 most-wanted criminals on the police list, along with two associates.
Hannan, shot twice in the abdomen during the shootout, was admitted to the clinic sometime on Friday after he and some of his associates stormed out of a house at Uttara firing on RAB members who had encircled the building and sped away on a microbus.
Two members of the elite force and a suspected criminal were also wounded in the shootout while five suspected associates of Hannan were arrested.
“We came to know that Hannan was admitted to a clinic somewhere in the Tongi or Savar area, but we could not trace him until Saturday afternoon,” said Lieutenant Colonel Chowdhury Fazlul Bari, commander of RAB 1 told newsmen.
“We sent a team of 20, led by Captain Alamgir and Lieutenant Arman. When they recognised Hannan by the cut marks in his right hand, he offered Tk 50 lakh and asked them not to arrest him.”
The team also arrested Shahed Ali and Debashish, two of Hannan’s associates, at the clinic and brought them to the RAB office at Uttara.
Bari told newsmen that they would continue their drive to hunt down other most-wanted criminals. He requested the press to keep faith in RAB and help the elite force arrest other criminals.
“We are at the initial stage and are yet to get sufficient arms and equipment. If you write negative reports about us at this stage, it would be demoralising for the force.”
Hannan told New Age that he had been used by some influential persons for criminal activities without disclosing any name.
Mohammad Hannan alias as Pichchi Hannan, son of Waziullah of Santoshpur in Faridganj upazila in Chandpur, grew up as a tokai (street urchin) at Karwan Bazar.
He first started collecting toll from fish traders at the Karwan Bazar wholesale market. Later, he started phensidyl trade at Nakhalpara and Karwan Bazar.
Hannan came in touch with some notorious criminals, including Sweden Aslam, after he was arrested several times.
At that time he was also introduced with firearms. Later, he established an armed outfit and became a major player in the underworld.
Of the 23 top-ranked criminals listed by the four-party alliance government in December 2001, Alauddin was killed in mob beating while Kamal Pasha, Mohammad Abbas alias Killer Abbas, Khorshed Alam Rasu, Khandakar Naim Ahmed Titon, Sohel alias Freedom Sohel, Liakat Ali, Mashiur Rahman Kochi are in jail. Pichchi Helal was in jail before the list was made.

Top terror Pichchi Hannan killed in RAB custody
Top terror Pichchi Hannan killed in RAB custody
Pichchi Hannan, one of the 23 top terrorists declared by the government, was shot dead during a gun battle at Tiabari in Savar when his accomplices tried to snatch him from police early on Friday.
Police said Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), the newly constituted elite force to combat crime, and the Detective Branch (DB) police jointly took Hannan to Tiabari at 1 am to recover arms as per his confessional statement.
The gunfight ensued when associates of the dreaded terrorist opened fire on the law enforcers as the joint team reached Tiabari.
As the gun battle continued, Pichchi Hannan tried to escape from the law enforcers, but died by bullet on the spot. His body was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue on Friday morning.
Earlier, he was brought to a 10-day remand on Tuesday following his arrest on June 26.
RAB members on the night of June 24 raided a house in Sector 11 in Uttara of the city to nab Hannan, who along with his associates escaped with injuries following a gun battle.
However, the RAB members arrested Hannan along with two others from a hospital in Savar, in injured condition, on June 26.
Hannan, who hailed from Faridganj of Chandpur district, rose as a top criminal during the latter part of the Ershad regime.
A vegetable seller at Karwan Bazar in his early life, he later used to control drug trade in and around the market and also engaged in extortion there.
Hannan was wanted in over two dozen cases, including killing, dacoity and mugging.

All those 23 should be killed like him,
since the police and the law can not keep them in jail.

Its painful to see you guys missing the main point here. Pichchi hannan was killed by the RAB members (he had five bullet shots on him, all shot from very close, according to the post mortem), presumably to bury all the information that might have leaked out from pichchi hannan about the big fishes. As has been told many times this guys are order-bearers and you can kill them as many times as you wish, its not gonna change anything. This murder was rather harmful, as it has put out any possibility of umasking some of the big fishies.

Nobody is missing the point of so called "big fishes" hiding behind those criminals.
It's an open secret thing now a days to all of us, as we can see in daily newspapers.
It's very clear that "the police" and "the law" are failing all the time
to bring those "big fishes" to the judgment.
On the other hand these criminals are exploring in numbers day after day,
and making new "big fishes" as well like a "infinite cycle".
Those criminals are directly hitting our society in every corner,
and people like us, have to pay all the painful things.
It's so sad to see the whole nation becomes the victim
to only a numbers of criminals ( gang leaders ).
It's a huge shame as a nation, can not be acceptable by any means.
So, from this crucial situation, what can we expect?
We have to cut that "infinite cycle" starting from somewhere of that cycle.
I strongly believe if the police and the society take a strong stand
to "hunt them down" regularly, the things will change towards better.
And those "big fishes" will automatically come to the scene or judgment one day.
As we can see, going after both of them is very tough and most of the time they both survives.
So what should we do? I am happy atleast RAB nail down some of them.
Every society of the world had to face this kind of situation.
I can remember around 15 years ago in Brazil police had the same situation,
and some people blamed them the same way.
( police corruption, killing criminals, saving big fishes etc. )
Now the situation is lot better, but don't know what happened to those "big fishes".

Cannot quite agree with this, criminals are not making ‘big fishies’, there is an independent cycle within the ‘fishies’, where big ones nurtures the small ones to grow up into another big one someday. And these so called criminals (as if the fishies are no criminals) are produced merely as ancillary accoutrements (and may be kindly utilized by rivals all at once). Your idea of “infinite cycle” sounds good but all too made up.

Disagree here again. Shortsightedness prevents us to see beyond those gang ‘leaders’. I fail to understand why it should be so hard for someone to see that it shouldn’t have been a big problem for a government to get rid of a ‘just-a-few-buncha-gang-leaders’ weren’t there a much bigger and stronger body behind to back them

Agree that we have to start from some where. But it is interesting to see such sudden-found-trust on our police just after one “successful operation” or two. I can see one of the motives being fulfilled here though. One pichchi hannan killed, and publics are successfully made to believe that we are on our way in being a great country, already. This is like our “safety-valve-of-a-bangla-movies”, where the villains never fail to be defeated, leaving our bemused spectators ‘oh so content’, safely sucking off the accruing wrath.

Now the only very slender silver lining that I can make out from here is that the fight for power may itself recede the very evil power, even if only for a while. As for Brazil, government was rather motivated and determined to uproot the terrorism. It is far from evident whether that is the case for Bangladesh, at least not yet.

man how can you say that Picchi Hannan was a bad man..man he was an inspiration to others as well...i mean if he didnt exist..then we wouldn't have had this true moment of laughter seeing a loser displayed on the newspapers and all across the media...so man you have to understand he was an inspiration..and a loser at the same time...and yes it seems strange at the manner of his death...definately conspiracy ring around it...

Tell it to the victim of Hannan. Tell it to the mother who lost her son to Hannan. Hannan and alike should be shot more often to bring justice for the victims.

Man he actually started off as a vegetable seller, well something must have sparked him off to become this Mostan..i mean he started off good and ended up being bad..now that happens to anyone..it somewhat just happened to be our pichi hannan..so hes really much of a victim as anyone else...not denying the fact that his victims were victims either...but you have to realise how it all started...how he became notorious..
Another criminal known as KAMU...was an ordinary family man...but after his entire family (including the cows and chickens) were killed..he seeked revenge which naturally sparked off his criminal activities..

Don't make any sense, if it is not a "Bangla" or "Hindi" movie.
So called KAMU may deserve "sympathy" not an "excuse".
Nothing could be an excuse for a criminal like Hannan or other 23.
Nothing will justify that they could be a victim, it's very simple.
They already lost their right to die in a normal way.
