I like Imrul as well. But I like Soumya's overall ceiling. As for the very next ODI, it should be Liton who gets the chance.

I think we should just stick with Soumya. He will either hit out or get out, so no much harm even in the worst case.

It's really a shame that for the last decade or so, we can't find a partner for Tamim. One has to stand back and also wonder, what makes the big four stand out? Is it that they have a different set of work ethic? Talent alone won't keep you around international cricket for this long. Wtf are the juniors doing during training?

If we had a strong lower order then I would have suggested Tamim-Mushy to open.

might be worth trying this line up and giving it sometime before WC:

1 tamim
2 liton/soumya
3 shanto
4 mosaddek
5 shakib
6 mushy
7 riyad

TBH riyad and mushy are probably the best finishers BD have atm, mosaddek imo has to be at 3 or 4 or he isn’t in the xi, shanto might be able to open but he’s the closest thing BD has to a specialist no 3 who’s got anywhere near the national team. Shakib is not a great finisher which is why I placed him above mushy and riyad.

Only other batsman I might want to see before World Cup who isn’t in the squad right now might be zakir if he impresses in the A team, I’m not saying discard sabbir but we have no choice but to try other line ups at this point, he hasn’t been firing and other options need to be worked out before WC rolls around.

Hopefully I didn’t miss anybody, apologise if I did.

How good is Anamul in domestic? What does he average to get called up this often?

There was a time when people used to say who would partner SN Ahmed. By the time Tamim arrived on scene, SN became a walking wicket.

May be by the time we find a partner for Tamim, he will be about to retire.

May be we will never have two good openers playing together.

Our success in ODI cricket is artificial and on the back of senior cricketers. Our domestic cricket did not improve as much as the national team did. The seniors are where they are after years of mediocre performances but they were lucky that we were at no 10 when they started (with low expectstion from fans). These guys developed the hard way which by playing and struggling against the best overseas. The younger players right now do not have that luxury like mushfiq or ryad had in their early days. The current situation demands that they walk into the side and perform. This would only happen when our domestic cricket standard actually improves. More investments is needed in raising the standard of DPL, with more foreign fast bowlers playing for the clubs, harder pitches and competitive teams. That would perhaps give enough foundation to a youngster coming into the side.

I can't believe that there can be a call for Imrul solely based on his opening partnership with TIK. Even if that's the case, should we drop Imrul when Tamim is injured (based on the same partnership logic)?

By 2019 WC, he will be over 32 and his S/R will fall under 60. He shouldn't be mentioned for any format of cricket.

SS is way better. We shouldn't have tried him in Test. It's high time that we sticked to some players meant for certain formats only.

absolutely not.

we still have a year left. groom litton/shanto. these are our future. invest in them rather than going back to imrul.

or maybe have an x factor like maruf/arifur at the opening. we need to be creative and out think out of the box.

This! The truth has been spoken. Imrul falls into that category of the big 4 +(short format mahmudullah). But somehow he couldn't make as big of an impact maybe because he was in and out of the squad so frequently.

Imrul was always a stop-gap solution and he will remain just that. He never inspired the confidence amongst people and selectors to consistently back him therefore I do not see him as being the solution to our opening woes. If he gets picked for the WC, then it will be because we did not fill that gap with youngsters like Anamul/Liton/Shanto/Soumya and had to use a stop-gap like himself.

I hate to tell you that I told you so but I indeed told you so.

Win or lose, MaShaAllah my boy made us proud today.

Imrul Kayes 72* (89 balls)

The problem with our selectors are

- they often ignore the numbers all together
- they have inherent bias against little older players
- they select players for the wrong format

It was a mistake to choose Imrul for T20 or test. He was always a good ODI player - especially for the supporting role to Tamim.

The only other ODI opener who is better than Imrul is an in-form Soumya.

One commentator put it nicely in Cricinfo:

Quote:
Tasmeem: "If you compare the average, you will find that Imrul has a decent average as an opener. His only problem is he can't convert his starts, which has been hampering him throughout his career. But the problem is that others don't even get the starts."
Before you bring out your knives attacking his strike rate, know that Imrul did best what was within his ability after coming at 5 down.

OK, so here's the question. Should he still be considered as Tamim's partner or play at the position he did today?

He should be TIK's opening partner with SS coming at 3.

It will be big mistake if he is not selected for England WC. His record in England is good.

Yea,problem is if we select Souyma we will end up with a score of 1-1 or 0-1

I thought he was part of our core team here... the fav 5 +imrul. However

A slight problem with his selection now is that the way tamim has evolved. Before tamim used to be attacking so Imruls role as sedating was vital but these days tamim is an anchor and if imrul also plays slowly - we will always never be able to take advantage of early restrictive fielding and will lag behind in run rate... if it's a 240 ish pitch great but if (more common these days) if its a 320 pitch then tamim imrul combination may become a burden.

England pitches are usually high scoring ones. So Imrul should make the 15 but not sure if he should make the 11 if rest are firing. Sarker as a partner to tamim is more appealing in this format because of his aggressiveness when tamim takes forever to build.

The other openers we have been picking, are they helping us in scoring 300+ totals?

we have a quiet a few recent scores of 300+. Sure not much contribution from the opener from the other end of tamim but they are not wasting balls. Risk with Imrul will be waste of balls. I am not saying it's not such a bad idea but i think with this opening duo a 300+ score will be more harder than not.
