Default Did Sir Ash Do Enough?

After the league phase is through...Sir is 1st amongst specialist bats in runs scored, 5th in average, and 7th in Strike Rate. 114-29-104.

Is it enough to warrant a spot? Yes, No, Don't Know?

Ash can cement his spot in T20 and stay there. But, what the selectors should NOT do is to play him in ODIs and Tests. He no longer has a clue about how to play them

The thing is, we are so used to criticising Ash that even when he plays reasonably well, we still blame him.

Overall I think this has been a great series for him. Sure he hasn't excatly made a whole heap of runs, but he did his part. That 40 he made yesturday was cruicial. I mean, we'd all love to see him carry us home, but at that time, with wickets in hand, I guess he did the right thing by hitting out and trying to go for that bonus point.

If he continues to play like this, he will deffinately cement his place in the T20 squad.
But Overall, well played Ash.

p.s. I accidently voted "i don't know yet" when I was supposed to vote "yes" -_-

His biggest problem has always been playing rush shots, even when he is all set. He did just that each and every time. His out actually got us in trouble and jeopardized the outcome of the match when he could just play it cool and everything would have been fine.

He is still making the same mistakes he made 8 years ago.

So who else is making runs in the team apart from Ashraful?

Ash is Ash in the end. He'll play baffling shots despite looking very good and throw away his wicket. That being said though, I've been pretty happy with him so far. Sure the SR's low but he's been pretty consistent which has been crucial for us since Tamim's been injured and then Jahurul, Junaid, and Anamul have all failed so far. So I've been happy with him. Since hes Ash in the end, I think he should just be in the T20 set up and stay away from ODIs and Tests.

What's wrong with Tamim? He is simply the most capable batsman in our side (except Shakib). Plus, he is a sheer beauty. His place in the team, for me atleast, is beyond question.

From recent photos it looks like Tamim is starting to become a bit more fit but I am concerned about his ability to rotate the strike. If Ashraful and Tamim open for us in T20s then we will have a top 2 who are heavily reliant on boundaries and have difficulty rotating the strike. If either of them have a good day, then we will not notice but there is a high chance that they could get bogged down.

J/K aside, I agree with you. He has all the shots but don't know which or when to use them - unfortunate indeed.

I have no expectation of Mtin except that I fully expect him to succumb to his own panoramic retardation, brainfart and then throw his wicket away.

The question really is whether he's putting runs on the board or not, and how? Being a T20 opener, he needs to maintain a strike rate appropriate for the power play but he won't do that. He'll do his own thing, namely execute premeditated blocks irrespective of the type of delivery, rotate the strike a little, play more gorgeous than streaky shots as long as he's there, and then throw his wicket away after scoring 30 odd runs. The likelihood of Mtin sticking around long enough to have the opportunity to accelerate later and end the innings with a strike rate 120-150 isn't something anyone except Mtin himself would bet on.

Now, that's far from ideal but what alternative do we have at the moment? Tamim has yet to find his way in this format, Imroze will succumb to a shot with plenty of height and not enough distance after reaching double figures if that, and Bijauy has been a disappointment so far.

Kopa Shamsu (কোপা সামসু) Zia is another goatlasher from a large stable of goatlashers who'll run out of luck real fast at the top of the order in international cricket. So I feel Mtin has done enough to open with Tamim. Not a lot of choices really at this point.

he's done well this tour but you also want your t20 openers to be able to carry on and play some longer innings, this means being able to knock the ball around long enough to get 70+ runs (even around the hundred mark on a good day and good pitch). i still wonder if ash is capable of that.

Voted no. You have NEVER done enough EVEN if you have a Test average of 99.99. You can always improve your game, always stay at crease and always learn from mistakes.

Edit: Glossed over the "warrant a spot in team" part. In that case, I'd say yes. The full flow shot seemed to ooze confidence off him. He needs to work hard to get that form back, of unhindered confidence.

i think now that we have seen Ashraful for over a decade we are all certain about a few things:
i) he will never be able to play according to the situation
ii) he will always play adventurous shots
iii) he will always have brain farts

Knowing this we need to adjust our expectations of him as a batsman
i) we should not expect him to play with responsibility and carry the innings
ii) we should not expect him to close out games
iii) we should not expect him to safe guard his wicket if there is a collapse

If he is in the side hence we should expect him:
i) to play a lot of strokes and score at a fast pace
ii) score decent amount of runs at the top of the order
iii) build decent platforms with Tamim
iv) take pressure off of Tamim by not getting bogged down

I think in this series he has shown the potential to do what can be expected of him. We must accept Ashraful as he is... whether he is a flawed genius or a talented brain fart as long as he gets decent scores at the top of the order there are other players who can carry the team from there on.

^ Great post Jadukor bhai. I agree that we should adjust our expectations. Look at how Pakistanis have adjusted their expectations of Afridi...

Ash has pretty much cemented his place in the T20 Opener slot, for the time being and for the World Cup in September.
He is the highest run scorer for Bangladesh in this series and has made some consistent contribution.
He is a man who is trying to find his feet back in the international arena and rebuilding his career which took a massive dip after Siddons took over.
Good to see him amongst runs.

Yes, he has done enough for now to be in the team.
