Default 48 burnt alive (still counting) in building fire in Old Dhaka

Quote:

At least 48 people were burnt alive and 40 others injured last night after a fire engulfed four buildings at Nimtoli in Old Dhaka, fire-fighters said.

Many others are feared dead as scores are believed trapped inside the buildings, they said.

Fire-fighters were struggling to get to the site to douse the fire.

The buildings were in flames till filing of this report at 10:30pm.

Locals said the fire broke out after a transformer burst into flames.

“I was having dinner. Suddenly I heard a huge bang and found the flames spread to two to three nearby buildings,” said Rahima Begum, resident of a building
What's going on in BD? More than 70 people died in span of 3 days and still counting....

the population density is so so high in old dhaka (and begunbari as well)... that it doesnt need a natural calamity to kill so many people. Even if a car break fails in the narrow streets of old dhaka, it can kill 10 ppl on the spot...

This is so unfortunate and I pray for the departed souls. But I dont see how this can be stopped any time soon. Its simply beyond the control of the fire dept... and I bet it took them hours to reach the fire through the narrow inaccessible streets...

the thing is ppl living in those conditions are well aware of the risk of living in a poorly built house right underneath a dilapidated transformer or next to a questionable chemical storage.... but they simply dont have anywhere else to go...

more over electric transformer around Dhaka city are so dangerous. If it rains a bit one of these old/damaged transformers got burst frequently....and these transformers are situated randomly anywhere. some are even closed to the residence :@

There is a chance of more. As there are lots of building without any real plans or supervision by any engineer whatsoever.

Our population is so dense, with inadequate infrastructure.

And please refrain from unnecessary dramatizing of the title, most casualties from fire die from smoke fumes not the flames.

112 died so far.
Govt declared national day of mourning tomorrow.

Heavens have opened up since the morning, only wish they opened up few hours earlier.

The loss of life is unbearable.

Inna Lillahi Wainna Ilaihi Rajiun.

Innalillahi wa inna illaihi rajiun. May the departed be granted heaven and let the injured be granted health.

Yesterday, as Palashi fire brigade rushed to the fire pit, there sirens disrupted my studies so much that I cursed out " there's a fire everyday here, so what's the rush to day?"

Then this morning, I saw the headlines, and my priorities were firmly put in to place.

Thank Allah that it was not a fire in my home.

This is so very devastating!! All our prayers are with the departed souls! All our prayers are with the the burned victims. I don't know what else to say! The death toll is now over 130+ I believe.

Allah please forgive us for our sins, please have mercy on us!

RIP to the innocent lives.
Can't imagine this...100+ dead in building fire? Were they all trapped for some reason?

some eyewitness said the narrow road of that spot was flooded with flame and chemical...it was like lava floating around. the spark spreader around and meanwhile transformer burst caused medium but sucessfull swift explosion all over the area.

This is so tragic. I hope in death they find the peace that they may not have found in life. The Government is quick to ban facebook, how quick is it to act on these matters?
