I don't know whether it is fair to credit Pakistan for their development, as they never been a product of the Pakistan domestic system. I know every Pakistani commentator is busy pushing that into the mind of every viewer.

It is important to note that these guys as refugees were not allowed to play in their clubs, further more the core of this team, who are now 24-29 years old returned back after the war in 2001 and setup up the U-19 team and later the senior side.

We saw them on TV, so did we see others, in fact 70% of Afghans still sallow over the big days of Australia . The only thing which may have made us more Pakistan fans than other teams is the fact that Pakistan always have had a few players in their team who are Pathans/Afghans by ethnicity. Like Misbah, Younis, Afridi, Umar Gul, Imran Khan, Juniad Khan etc.

BUT since we've been accepted as a part of ICC, Pakistan has helped us a lot, by playing us a few times, allowing us to use their facilities. Just as Sri lanka, backing us whenever we needed their support.

When that is said, I totally agree with you, we still have a lot to improve in order to be considered for test-status. Our domestic structure sucks so does facilities. But we do need the money from ICC/ACC. Because our current funds, which are paid to us based on our Affiliate team status will bring us no where.

I can see afghan players being popular with bd crowds and more afgans will be called for bpl 3. Let's hope afghanistan remains humble and doesn't become a big mouth like ireland.

Nabi embraces local flavour

Afghanistan cricketer Mohammad Nabi has gotten quite fond of Bangladesh's staple diet -- rice and lentils -- and it might have helped the Sylhet Royals all-rounder sustain the pressure in front of a huge crowd at the MA Aziz Stadium yesterday. It was something of a new experience for Nabi, who considered himself lucky to be playing in the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), and to play a match-winning knock in front of such a big crowd who however mostly supported his opponents, the Chittagong Kings.

Those Afgans players are lucky to have a friendly country like Bangladesh on their side. They don't get enough International matches and yet most of their star players are invited to play in BPL. Even Irish players are welcomed to play in Bangladesh. And look at us. Its been ages we got Test Status, still our players are treated badly or don't get enough respect for their merits.

I would so LOVE to see 5 match ODI/First class series between Bangladesh and Afghanistan. In fact i wouldn't be surprised at all to see Afghanistan snatch a couple of victories from us if that were to happen.

I hate to say it Naimul bhai but the truth is, we are only using them as a last resort. The only reason M. nabi, Zadran were bought by franchises is because of Pak players pulled out in the last minute. If the Pak players came to play, Afghan players wouldn't have been bought. Last season we didn't buy any of them. If we were all about being friendly/helping them, than teams would have gotten Nabi and Zadran regardless of who else is playing or not. We were not exactly going out of our way to help them, at that point we were desperate and decided to make the most of it by picking Afghan players.

last season we bought hamid hasan and it was mandatory for each franchise to buy 1 player from associate teams. give credit where it is due

no it was not in this season. because they wanted less burden on franchises as we saw wat hpnd in last edition regarding payment

It would be rather a much competitive series if AFG plays with BD A.

I agree they are playing in XI only because pakistani players are not playing. But, AFAIK, each team has to buy 1 player from Associate countries whether they play him or not. Etai ba kom ki ?

এগিয়েছে তো বটেই, আর সেই এগিয়ে যাওয়ার অন্যতম নায়ক নবী নিজে। ক্রিকেটাকাশের হাজারো তারায় তাঁকে আলাদা করে চেনা মুশকিল হতে পারে, কিন্তু আফগান ক্রিকেটে সবচেয়ে উজ্জ্বল তারার নাম নবী। অনেক আফগান কিশোর-তরুণের ঘরের দেয়ালে তাঁর পোস্টার, সিলেট রয়্যালসের খেলা দেখালে কাবুল-জালালাবাদে টিভির পর্দায় চোখ থাকে লাখো আফগানের। এমসিসির হয়ে খেলেছেন বেশ কবার। পেছন ফিরে তাকালে বর্তমানকে নবীর মনে হতে পারে স্বপ্নের ঘোরে হাঁটাহাঁটি!
জন্ম ও বেড়ে ওঠা তাঁর পেশোয়ারের আফগান সীমান্তে। সামরিক অভ্যুত্থান আর গৃহযুদ্ধের ডামাডোলে ১৯৭৮ সালে আফগানিস্তান ছেড়ে পেশোয়ারে পাড়ি জমিয়েছিল নবীর পরিবার। শুরু বিদেশ-বিভুঁইয়ে কপর্দকহীন অবস্থায় জীবনযুদ্ধ। ১৯৮৫ সালে জন্ম নবীর, শৈশব কেটেছে দারিদ্র্যে। তবে বাবা-চাচারা যখন কাপড়ের ব্যবসায় নেমে পরিশ্রম করছেন দিন-রাত, কিশোর নবীর মাথায় তখন ক্রিকেটের ভূত। চাচাতো ভাইদের সঙ্গে মিলে একটা পারিবারিক ক্রিকেট দলও গড়ে ফেললেন। বয়স ১৫-১৬ হতেই খেলা শুরু করলেন স্থানীয় এক ক্লাবে।
জীবনযুদ্ধে যেখানে হিমশিম খেতে হচ্ছে প্রতিনিয়ত, ক্রিকেট-বিলাসিতা মোটেও মেনে নিতে পারেননি বাবা-মা, ‘সবাই বলত পারিবারিক ব্যবসায় মন দিতে, খেলাটা পেশা হতে পারে বুঝত না। বলত, কোনো ভবিষ্যৎ নেই ক্রিকেটে। তবু আমি বন্ধুর সঙ্গে লুকিয়ে ক্লাবে যেতাম খেলতে।’ একদিন পত্রিকায় দেখলেন, আফগানিস্তান ক্রিকেট দল আসছে পাকিস্তানে প্রীতি ম্যাচ খেলতে। ‘আফগানিস্তানেও ক্রিকেট দল আছে’ জেনে মনে মনে ভবিষ্যতের ছবিটাও এঁকে ফেললেন। কদিন পর এক বন্ধুর কাছে শুনলেন, অনূর্ধ্ব-১৭ ক্রিকেট ট্রায়াল হবে আফগানিস্তানে। বাবা-মাকে অনেক কষ্টে রাজি করিয়ে নবী ছুটলেন স্বদেশে, জীবনে প্রথমবার!
সেটি ২০০৩ সাল, যুদ্ধবিধ্বস্ত মাতৃভূমিকে দেখে কেঁদেছিল তাঁর হূদয়, ‘কিছুই ছিল না আফগানিস্তানে...চার� �িকে ধ্বংসস্তূপ, মনে হয় না দু-একটা বাড়ি ছাড়া খাড়া কোনো দেয়াল আমি দেখেছি। রাস্তাঘাট সব ভাঙাচোরা, লাশের পর লাশ পড়ে থাকতে দেখেছি রাস্তার পাশে।’ ভয়-শঙ্কা মনে চেপে বসেছিল, কিন্তু ট্রায়ালে টিকে যাওয়ার পর আর পেছন ফিরে তাকাননি। অধিনায়ক হয়ে এসিসি অনূর্ধ্ব-১৭ টুর্নামেন্টে খেলতে গেলেন ভারতে, ফিরেই জাতীয় দলে ডাক। এরপর শুধুই এগিয়ে যাওয়া। আইসিসি ওয়ার্ল্ড ডিভিশন ফাইভ থেকে তরতর করে উঠে এল আফগানিস্তান, টি-টোয়েন্টি বিশ্বকাপ খেলল, পেল ওয়ানডে স্ট্যাটাস। আক্রমণাত্মক ব্যাটিং আর নিয়ন্ত্রিত অফ স্পিন দিয়ে এই এগিয়ে যাওয়ার পথে অগ্রণী সৈনিক নবী।
আফগানিস্তান ও নবীর এগিয়ে যাওয়ার আরেকটি প্রমাণ যেন এবারের বিপিএল। সিলেট রয়্যালসে নবী, খুলনায় শাপুর জাদরান ও সামিউল্লাহ শেনওয়ারি। নবী যোগ করেন, ‘আরও বিশ্বমানের ক্রিকেটার আছে আমাদের। দওলত জাদরান, হামিদ হাসান, গুলবদিন নাইব, মোহাম্মদ শাহজাদরা এই টুর্নামেন্টে অনায়াসেই খেলতে পারে।’ আফগানিস্তান জাতীয় দল এখন পাকিস্তানে, আগামী পরশু থেকে শহীদ আফ্রিদির পাকিস্তান ‘এ’ দলের বিপক্ষে সিরিজ। কিন্তু বিপিএলে খেলা ‘আফগান ক্রিকেটেরও গর্ব’ বলে তিনজনকে অনাপত্তিপত্র দিয়েছে বোর্ড।
২০০৬ সালে ভারতে এমসিসির বিপক্ষে এক ম্যাচে ৩৯ বলে সেঞ্চুরি করেছিলেন। মুগ্ধ এমসিসি কোচ মাইক গ্যাটিং পরে এমসিসির হয়েই খেলার সুযোগ করে দেন নবীকে। এমসিসির হয়ে লারা-দ্রাবিড়দের সঙ্গে খেলাকে মনে করেন জীবনের অন্যতম সেরা প্রাপ্তি। এবার বিপিএল খেলছেন, একদিন আইপিএল-বিগ ব্যাশেও খেলতে চান। স্বপ্নের সীমানা তাঁর আরও বড়, ‘স্বপ্ন দেখি আফগানিস্তানের হয়ে টেস্ট খেলার। ক্রিকেট বোর্ড যদি অবকাঠামোর উন্নয়ন করতে পারে, তাহলে অবশ্যই সম্ভব। কারণ আমার কোনো সন্দেহই নেই যে মাঠের পারফরম্যান্স আমাদের ভালো থেকে আরও ভালো হবে।’
আফগান ক্রিকেটের স্বপ্নের ক্যারাভান যেভাবে ছুটছে, নবীর স্বপ্ন পূরণ হওয়াটাও হয়তো অসম্ভব নয়!
