Default 20/20 to be a part of 2020

Cricket gets Olympic approval

Quote:
Twenty20's push to be part of the 2020 Olympics has received a major fillip with news that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has voted to have the International Cricket Council (ICC) approved. However, while cricket - along with power boating sport climbing - can now bid to join the 2020 games the ICC currently has no imminent plans to have the format included.

"They are recognised federations by us, which now means that they can take part in IOC events," said IOC director of communications Mark Adams during a meeting in Vancouver ahead of the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Haroon Lorgat, the ICC's chief executive, welcomed the development. "The ICC is extremely proud of the recognition given to our great sport by the IOC which we always considered to be our first step in becoming a part of the Olympic family," Lorgat said. "At this stage, no consideration or decision has been made regarding participation or applying for approval to participate in the Olympic Games."

Cricket received Olympic "recognition status" in 2007 and faces a stiff battle from other sports, such as golf, karate and baseball, to become part of the programme. The ICC has also been wary of pushing for Twenty20 at the 2020 games. David Morgan, the ICC president, had visited Beijing to meet with IOC officials in 2008, while cautioning the sport to think carefully about a push for a spot at the Olympics.

One of the game's more outspoken advocates of taking cricket - in specific Twenty20 - has been Adam Gilchrist, who at last year's Cowdrey Lecture at Lord's pushed for the game to be included in the 2020 games. The proposal has also received backing from Steve Waugh, Stephen Fleming, Kumar Sangakkara, Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman and Yuvraj Singh.

Cricket was part of the 1900 Olympics in Paris and has not appeared since, but will feature at this year's Asian Games in Guangzhou, China.
It's the bidding approval just, and there are some other sports bidding too. So hopefully Cricket wins it. First Gold medal in Olympic Cricket, how about that? Oh we can dream. But heyy, still 10 years to go; so there's every chance.

just to win a bronze u hav to be a semi finalist...... too much to ask from BD....

on the other hand, if its u-23/u-19 teams we have a much better chance than the main team...

where is 2020 olympic taking place, again? or is it still TBD...

Let's play 12/12 and include that on 2012!!

On the 2020 issue, still a long way to go. I fail to see how the Olympic Committee would include a game that's being played by only 10 countries (Full Members). Importantly, the whole of Europe, minus UK, and the biggest brothers USA,China dont play the game.
Find it hard to see how it would be part of such a global event.

India's gotta grow mighty big for cricket to be included in the Olympics.
It would happen at some point, not sure when though.

Umm...I believe cricket is played by Scotland, Ireland,Netherlands, Namibia, Kenya, USA, Zimbabwe, Canada, Afghanistan,Nepal and China in addition to the 9 current test nations. So that's 20 nations? How many did ever play softball? And how many of the general public do ever play Archery?

I think they actually might do it as an under-23 thing in order to not undermine the ICC WC tournaments. Bangladesh has to take T20 seriously if it is included in the Olympics. We lost to Ireland in T20, who just lost to Afghanistan.

And if one is to argue about how cricket is only played well by 8-9 countries, tell me, how many can actually compete for a medal in basketball? Its basically a free gold medal for USA isn't it? At least in T20 cricket there's 7 countries with serious odds of winning the Gold Medal (prob 10-1 would be the worst bet for top 7). I just forgot the West Indies would play as separate countries so has to qualify along with non-test playing nations. Also, think how so many ppl in America watch basketball at the Olympics.Exactly same kind of popularity will be in the sub-continent for cricket.

With West Indies being split into 7-8 nations, we can have up to 25 serious teams. I really think cricket deserves to get in...
