Default Bangladesh hope for upset

Champions Trophy Group B, Edgbaston: Bangladesh v South Africa

Match starts 1015 BST Sunday

South Africa's recent run of defeats offers Bangladesh a glimmer of hope in their Champions Trophy game on Sunday.

They have been beaten in 10 successive one-day internationals and a warm-up game against Pakistan provided no comfort as they went down by 24 runs.

"Their confidence can't be good," said Bangladesh coach Dav Whatmore.

But victory is not something his side is used to either and it will still be a major surprise if Rajin Saleh enjoys a successful debut as captain.

The 21-year-old found himself thrown in at the deep end when regular captain Habibul Bashar was ruled out of the tournament because of a thumb injury.

And he will rely heavily on senior members of the side like Khaled Mahmud and Khaled Mashud, who have both done the job in the past.

Bangladesh completed their preparations for Edgbaston by beating the USA by 70 runs, but the realities of one-day international cricket are very different.

They have won only two games since the 1999 World Cup, which was also played in England - but Whatmore remains hopeful.

"They [South Africa] will be pretty happy they are playing Bangladesh because we are still anked down at the bottom.

"But if you have been beaten a lot recently, it is always in the back of your mind that one wiket will lead to two and players get more apprehensive in their shots.

"We know what it's like," he said.

South Africa have players of proven quality at their disposal, including skipper Graeme Smith, Jacques Kallis, Herschelle Gibbs, Shaun Pollock and Mark Boucher.

And Kallis insists that despite eveything, they are capable of going all the way and winning the tournament.

"It is like a batter going through a rough trot. You don't just become a bad batter overnight and we haven't become a bad team overnight.

"It is up to senior players to lead by example, but unfortunately some of the senior players are out of form and not getting the runs or wickets they are capable of - but it will come," said Kallis.

His view was echoed by skipper Smith.

"I believe I can do great things with the team. I'm still feeling strong and very confident about the captaincy and I'm sure we'll get out of this situation pretty soon," Smith commented.

Thats right, we can just hope for an upset. And I hope that it is not us at the end of the day that are upset (although it is likely)...

I think Bangladesh can do it if they try their best and if their batting and bowling show the real power.

It is quite funny to read on the front page that in one of the articles it says Rajin is 21 and in another it says he is 20. Both these articles are by BBC. How bout they stick with one of the ages.

Rajin's DOB is 1983-11-20. That makes him 20 years old. However, his birthday is just 2 months away. That makes him almost 21. It's amazing we are fielding a 20 year old Captain. I hope the "boro bhais" in the team will be co-operative, and let him do his job smoothly.

Thanx for that Carte Blanche so BBC should stick with saying he is 20 for now.
