Default Vettori likely to lead one-day squad

Cricinfo

Bit of a surprise. Styris should have got a chance considering his experience and current form...

Vettori likely to lead one-day squad

Daniel Vettori is likely to lead New Zealand's one-day squad for their three one-day internationals in Bangladesh. Fleming is currently in charge of the Test side, but will probably return home after the two-match series to rest a long-term abdominal injury.

According to a report in the BBC website, Jacob Oram, Chris Cairns and Craig McMillan are also in the running, but Vettori is expected to get the nod. "If Stephen's out and that's what we are hearing then Daniel is the obvious choice to replace him," David Trist, a former New Zealand coach, told New Zealand Press Association. "He is tactically very sound, he's able to read momentum shifts but he would also bring other aspects to the job because of his all-round skills." The squad for the one-day series is likely to be announced on Thursday.

The brief rest will allow Fleming to recoup before a busy season ahead: New Zealand will play home-and-away series against Australia and will host Sri Lanka for a home series over the next six months. Immediately after the international season, Fleming will be off to England to lead Nottinghamshire during the 2005 county season.

Vettori, 25, had a great start to his international career, but has struggled for form more recently. However, there were signs of a revival on New Zealand's tour to England earlier this year – in the final of the NatWest Series, Vettori wrecked West Indies' middle order, returning magnificent figures of 5 for 30 as New Zealand won the game with ease. With pitches in Bangladesh expected to favour the spinners, Vettori could be in for another rich haul of wickets over the next few weeks.

I hope the chittagong Aziz pitch is doctored to our favour. Otherwise, looks like a repetition of the last test played there.

I wish Vettori's debut as a captain for the series against Bangladesh starts with a nightmare. Although I wish him all the best in his new assignment, but with the exceptions against Bangladesh.

I wish Vettori good luck. He has been around for ages and he is still 25. Amazing he has played 55 tests to that age. thats heaps.
