Default Match thread -4th Test/Ashes;Aus-Eng.

End of the 1st session England are 129-1. Trescothick is 62* having been bowled off a no ball, and Vaughan is playing well on 14* having hit 3 lovely coverdrives.

Strauss is the man out - caught at slip off a bottom edge onto his boot when sweeping. Unlucky.

Englands run rate has been a healthy 4.65 in the absence of Glenn McGrath (elbow). Debutant Shaun Tait has had a tough start, going for 26 off 5 overs with Englands batsman lining him up later in that spell.

Discuss the rest of the match here!

A joke about Mortaza Masrafee taking out Australian citizenship would be considered in bad taste, wouldnt it ...

Well... it always rains in England!

I suggest to play the next Ashes series in Sicily, you can be sure there will be no rain interruption!

Trescothick - McGrath's 500th
Trescothick - Tait's 1st

Good omens for Tait?

20 no balls in 30 overs. is this is good bowling or fast bowlers tend to bowl no balls?

Rob
Yeah, their catching has been disgraceful. Kasper dropped that easy c & b chance off KP. While the one Hayden dropped at gully can be contributed to age related slow movement! Clarke would have palmed it for sure..

KP's test innings are quite a contrast from his swashbuckling one day innings. In tests KP seems to be a bit of a grinder.

Rob can you go and bop Vaughnie on the head for me! Getting out to Punter's dibbly dobblers when he's got a century for the asking!!!! It's moments like this that makes me wonder if England indeed has the killer instinct to win back the Ashes. Now the onus is on Freddie and Skunk-works to get at least 150 more runs on board. That would give the tail the impetus to thrash their way to a 400+ total.

Point to ponder tho - if Punter is making his dibbly dobblers talk, reckon Hoggy should make the ball sing?

I don't know about that. Did you see the way he batted at Edgbaston?

It is pleasing though that he has shown he can be adaptable and bat in manners the situation suits. That is the key to success.

As for Vaughan getting out to Ponting, well. Vaughan shouldn't of been playing at it.

I think it is a bit concerning that Trescothick keeps getting fifties and isn't getting hundreds!! He know has 27 test fifties, and 12 hundreds - that is a poor conversion rate.

Anyway, an early wicket for Australia tomorrow and I think we will get bowled out for under 350. But if the first hour is survived, we should get 400-450 which is a total England have found competitive in the last two tests. I think Englands bowlers will get more out of this pitch than the Aussies.

Amazing partnership for both Flintoff and Geraint Jones:

Current Partnership: 177 runs, 38.5 overs, RR: 4.56

Flintoff 102*
G.Jones 69*

Wow! Flintoff out while I was writing!
Great job anyway, England are 418/6, guess they should reach 450 at least and it's a good score, I think.

He was lbw.

Martyn was as well, but unlucky. Slight inside edge.

Everything is going Englands way at the moment, which is what happens when you are on top.

I stand corrected. i thought Aussies still had something in them to beat the English. It would take a heroic second innings batting by the Aussies if they want to save this match. i don't see it. England has out played them in every aspect of the game so far. All they have to do is to hold on to the catches and there are on their way to the ashes. Well done England.

99/5, good start by England. Must bowl out Aus as quick as possible. Make them follow on if possible, why not?
