....Does anyone know the origin of this peculiar BD practice;when was it first recorded; any other country where this happens.

Till the 22nd of the current month, about 26 people were attacked with acid and 21 people were attacked in January and 15 in February.

The statistics show a steady rise of acid attacks. About 410 people were attacked with acid in 2003, 136 in 1999 (May-December), 222 in 2000, 341 in 2001 and 485 in 2002.

The officials observed that in recent times the reason of acid attack has been shifted to other social disputes instead of traditional family disputes or refusal to marry or initiate a romantic relationship

For the barbarians who commit these crimes, sometimes I think capital punishment is the only course of action.

as far as i am aware, capital punishment is automatically supposed to follow an 'acid attack'. it's implementation that's the problem.

Agreed Shubho... The implementation almost never comes thru... ppl who do these things are usually ppl backed up by politics (gram or shohor jeikhanei...) and they never get prosecuted properly and effectively... it still comes down to failure of the law to punish the ppl. Some strong examples of punishment wud scare the wrong dowers into thinking twice before doing such an act...
