Default What is the history behind BDeshis love for Brazil, Argentina?

Why do Bangladeshis go crazy during football WC?
Why they love Brazil & Argentina so much ?
What's with the craziness with Brazil/Argentina flags , jerseys & all the grouping and fighting among supporters in BDesh?

I saw many people on FB who don't follow football at all wearing jersey, uploading foot ball related status, what's with this ajeira lok dekhano dhong? nijer desh ke niyao to eto abeg dekhina.

Anyway, this thread is about getting some info & what you guys know/think about it.

Football has always been very popular in the Bengal. In fact, it was the most popular sport until cricket caught up. During 70s and 80s, television became more prevalent and Brazil/Argentina were the dominant teams. Pele was already a legend by then and then you had Maradona mesmerizing the football world .

The dynasties continued with Brazil producing Dunga, Bebeto, Romario, Rivaldo, Ronaldo. Argentina dipped a bit but still had Batistuta, Diego Simone, Crespo. That's why the overwhelming support for either team.

Historically Italy also had some support after the big 2 (who liked Baggio, Maldini, Buffon, Del Piero) and now people also root for Germany/Spain/Netherland because they produce top players. But Brazil/Argentina was the original rivalry dating back decades and that's why its more fun to be in one of the camps.

I don't mind all this football craze. Its WC after all. The biggest sporting event in the world.

p.s. that's my observation. I might be wrong.

Answer is simple. Because we don't know how to play football, what we do we play jumbura in the name of football. Brazil and Argentina are amongst the best, thus, we try to fulfil our dreams through them and go crazy.

Also, socio-economic cultural gap between them and us is not much in compare to many other European nations, which might be one of the reasons as well.

I was really bothered after watching yesterday's ATN bangla news, a boy died getting electric shock as he wanted to put a flag somewhere top of the roof, and he was the third victim so far.
I never heard BDeshis died trying to put the flag of BDesh during any of the ICC event we hosted.

I just think it's a trend for most people, u don't do it u don't look cool.
only BDeshis can feel so proud holding other country's flag.

It's in our gene brother. Any sort of explanation or word will fall short to make you understand the craziness over world cup football, not to confuse with hand-egg game.

... but... but... when they say jump, the world says how high. So when they say from now on, this egg shaped ball is football, from there on the chicken start laying round eggs.... and football becomes soccer.

The Real Reason Americans Call It 'Soccer' Is All England's Fault

It's Football not Soccer

I always knew that U.S. randomly just didn't make up the the term, "Soccer". It must have come from somewhere. This paper sheds a lot of light into this topic. It's pretty interesting.

I recall, very early in the 70s, one of the standard board Bangla primers/textbooks (perhaps আমার বই) having a section on SMR and Independence, followed by one on Pele and Brazil (titled, I think, ফুটবলের রাজা). I suspect that might have been the initial introduction of Brazil as a footballing nation to many children in the 70s. The mesmerizing but heartbreaking 1982 and 1986 teams just reinforced the support.

It was in class 2, we had to memorize full name of Pele - which was really grueling experience for a 6 year old. I think this is co-related to our hate to history as a subject.

This is what happens when you grab an egg shaped ball and run holding it and call that game as 'football' ! My dear, that's not 'football', that's called 'hand-egg ball' !

There's healthy passion for something exciting and beautiful and then there is the hujuigga madness we experience every four years. What's behind the madness? Issues that have issues lead to living vicariously like a bunch of ...

That same book contained the story of a lady who lived nearby a forest and once saved herself from an attacking Royal Bengal Tiger waving a colorful umbrella that she possessed.

If I recall, in our school books we studied "The Black Pearl" Kalo Manik. - Pele.

Who don't like winners? Noone supports Patrick Ewing over Hakim. Or Carl Malone over Moses Malone.
