BCB Media - ‘We are a work in progress, we are a good team’: Pybus
‘We are a work in progress, we are a good team’: Pybus
Wednesday, 19 September 2012
KANDY – Bangladesh Coach Richard Pybus speaks about his expectations at the ICC WT20:
Realistic target
We have to play well to win the game. On the day it could be anybody’s game, but I’m pretty happy where we are at. Bottom line is our focus is on the first game. I thought we were pretty poor against Ireland and it could be because we spent three days travelling to the West Indies, four days playing and another three days to travel back. So I will give the boys a bit of grace there. But we had a good training day today and another training day tomorrow and get back into the game.
Area of concern if any
The boys are fit, no niggles in the camp. So we are really looking forward to the first game.
Spinners
It is one of our core strengths, and we have different types of spinners. We could use six or seven spinners if we wanted to. I am also pleased at the seam attack. We have a raw fast bowler in young Raju (Abul Hossain), we have some high quality swing and seam from Mash and Shafiul. And a few overs from Zia and also have an all-rounder like Farhad Reza.
Group of death
When you’ve got a group of three teams, each group is a group of death. The two sides are brought closer in 240 balls. I wouldn’t call it the group of death; we know what we have to do, we have been training hard for the last three months.
Areas that need improvement
It is about being focused on the day. We have to be very precise in the things that we need to do. An area where I expect improvement is our fielding, not skills but intensity has not been what I expect.
Pitches
You could play on every square in the world, but each track will have different quality. The main thing for me is that sides that read the conditions quickly and adapt, get their lengths right, that’s what it is going to be about. I think we are pretty well suited with the variety of our attack but the ability of the bowlers to adapt will be the key.
If he had the option to add one thing…
It’s important we are on top of our game; being calm and composed is one of the biggest things in Twenty20 cricket. You watch the players and see if they hold their shape. We are a work in progress, we are a good team.
On coaching Sub continental teams
Teams play as a reflection of their culture. It doesn’t change the way that you prepare. It is really about understanding about your boys, and not overly focus on your opposition. You need to know how they construct their game. Bottom line is for coach is to making sure we focus on what we can control.
Main strength of New Zealand
They are quite a strong team in fact. Daniel Vettori is the key man. As a batting unit, they have a few dangerous strikers of the ball like Brendan McCullum and Ross Taylor. They have pretty good depth, and NZ is always very competitive and focused unit. I think for us, the boys are looking forward to the game.
Their weak point
It’s not for me to point out the weak point of their side. They are a good unit.

I like how Pybus is putting the team ahead not just our star players. Also, about the intensity of fielding I agree with him....we have to be focused otherwise McCullum and Taylor will reap our bowling attack.
Nice interview

Compared to Dav Watmore? I think Watmore was the master in interviews and Siddons was the worst in being 'polished'-- I don't consider Mohsin Kamal to be a coach at all...

He's right up there with Dav, yeah. One area that has been a definite improvement over Siddons.

The area he expects improvement is fielding. :s What about our back-to-back Middle-order FUMBLE!!!??

That's the key to handling the media. He might very well have huge concerns with the middle order batting - PRIVATELY. But speaking about it publicly to the media will do nothing to improve that. In fact, it might make it worse by putting added pressure on them by calling them out in public. The best way to handle questions like that are to use vague terminology like "intensity". Fielding is the one area where this matters most.
It might make for some boring articles, but its one thing all good coaches have in common.

I like Pybus's approach. He's very positive, very organized, very practical. Tbh i was hoping for a more higher profile coach like Geoff Marsh or even Trevor Bayliss. But now i am happy with Pybus. He has a good support team, and he ll also have the support of RM. He is not taking a drastic new approach, rather improving and working on the good work done by Siddons and Law.
So things are looking good for BD cricket. Now i hope we can appoint specialist batting, fielding and bowling coach for the academy. Not saying we need foreign coaches. Involve guys like Salahuddin, Aminul Islam, Rafique. Why should Salahuddin work in Malaysia, when he can aid the development of our youngsters! BCB needs to appreciate what he has done for our players, and bring him back.

that's blantantly unfair. ireland has been playing cricket since the 1830s and competitively since 1870s, don't make it sound like they started yesterday.
of course we're going to be WIP, although progress has been slow and frustrating, we are progressing, and by no mean can you expect us to a world class team. and players aren't the only ones to blame..our board, management etc etc blah blah...

Whatever you say still don't justify our misery and their progress.
And what do you mean by 'World Class' ? Ain't we a Test playing country ? Ain't we playing 26 years of ODI cricket and 12 years of Test Cricket ? If i don't expect our team to be a world class team by now, then when ? We still get labelled as 'Minnow' along with other non test playing nations. Tired of listening 'giant killer', 'work in progress', 'bright future', 'team of talents' terms !!

lol yeah, I can understand your frustration. but to be fair, we only play 2 tests a year...if that even. But it's a bit too gratifying saying that afganistan are progressing faster and all that..i mean really..world division 5...lets see how they go in the top tier. same with ireland..and there are other things like it took nzl 26 yrs to win their first test...compared to that we're doing grreat lol
but anyway, try to be positive dude

I wouldnt get too worried about Afghanistan and Ireland-and their progress. See at one point we were well behind Zimbabwe, Kenya and even UAE. But these teams didnt progress because of their inability to churn out players on a consistent basis. The day Ireland and Afghanistan do produce more O Bryans and Nabi's, then we can be worried.
We ve got a nice system in place. And every new generation is better than the previous one. If we can keep this cycle going we ll do well. There will be a time when the number and quality of players we produce will be more than other rivals. We just have to be patient and keep working hard. We are not doing a bad job trust me. Sri Lanka is wondering how they will replace Mahela, Sanga, Dilshan, Samaraweera etc. They would have loved to have guys like Anamul and Mominul in their pipeline.

Their weak point
It’s not for me to point out the weak point of their side. They are a good unit.

I'm having this question in mind whether he understand the Bangladesh team at all. Failed tournament, Abul keep role playing villain in the squad, needless luxurious prep tour, Important player starts mouthing over captaincy & team motivation, and now changing captain!
Pybus, I'm not impressed with you, not sure about BCB yet. But some red inked notes are allready starts lining for sure.
