The USTR hearing obviously raises some valid and pressing concerns regarding the conditions of our garments and shrimp industries, in the context of evaluating whether to continue, suspend or cancel our GSP facility. At the same time, if such a chain of horrifying incidents had not occurred over the past couple of years, would it still not have been worthwhile to consider whether to continue with this GSP facility or not? After all, as the article indicates, only 0.54% of our total exports to the US are even under this scheme!

Why continue under a scheme, which only yields $26 million/annum, but allows for the US to summon another sovereign country's bureaucrats, businessmen and civilian experts at will to appear in front of a quasi-judicial commission?

These bureaucrats, businessmen and civilian experts should be answering these very questions in front of our OWN courts and commissions.
Unless there is a massive business interest of the sovereign burocrats themselves in the GSP quota trade...why would they even respond; conventional wisdom says, they even don't care to respond on a billion $ national benefit, if there is no self interest. No wonder, garments businessmen hardly cares for GSP Quota.

I hope you know he nature of Quota trade in Ministry & BGMEA. 26m is a lot of money for some individual pockets.

^ Of course! And now these bureaucrats and politicians and civil society people are playing to the tune of the Americans that this GSP facility is oh-so-important, as its existence purportedly creates a favorable impression on investors about the country. I believe more private investors would be impressed if we were able to mend and repair our creaking bureaucracy, inefficient justice system and the like rather than giving alibis and excuses in front of some trade board in DC.

Bangladesh embarks on £1 billion Yak deal
DHAKA, Bangladesh, April 4 (UPI) -- Bangladesh is planning to buy 24 Russian-made Yak-130 Mitten jet combat trainers from Russia's state arms exporter Rosoboronexport.

The deal comes after Rosoboronexport showcased the twin-engine subsonic Yak-130 at the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition last month, a report by the Russian state-run news agency RIA Novosti said.

Detailed negotiations for the deal involving $1 billion of credit to Bangladesh will take place this spring, said Rosoboronexport Deputy Chief Viktor Komardin.

Ban slapped on lungi clad rickshaw-pullers

A lungi clad rickshaw-puller stopped at the entry of Baridhara in the capital yesterday. Security workers do not let rickshaw-pullers in lungi into the posh neighbourhood following instructions from the association of Baridhara home owners. Photo: Star

Rickshaw-pullers in traditional Bangalee outfit, lungi, are barred from entering the capital’s Baridhara, one of the country’s most posh neighbourhoods where diplomats and affluent people live.
Baridhara home owners’ association, Baridhara Society, has instructed security personnel not to let in rickshaw-pullers in lungi, requiring them to be in trousers to enter Baridhara, particularly Block K, said security men and local commuters.
As The Daily Star correspondent arrived at the lakeside entry of Baridhara at 11:45am yesterday, he found that the security man on duty Abdul Kader had stopped a rickshaw- puller for wearing lungi and forced the two passengers on board to get down.

Youth dies after ‘torture’ in police station

http://www.dhakatribune.com/banglade...police-station

Quote:
Iqbal Hossain, elder brother of the victim, at the DMCH morgue told reporters that a team led by Inspector (investigation) Arup Tarafder of Sonargaon police station picked up Reza from their home around 5pm on May 14. Police said they would interrogate Reza over the recent four-murder incident in the area. The following day, his family members went to the police station but the law enforcers did not allow them to see the victim. Reza was not even kept at the police station and not remanded, Iqbal said.

“On May 18, we finally were able to reach the inspector over phone. He demanded Tk500,000 for his release. On the following day, I went to the police station with my maternal uncle Shahabuddin.”

He said they were taken to the first floor of a two-storey building on the premises where Inspector Arup stays. Reza was kept confined there.

“We found Reza handcuffed. His hands and legs were bearing signs of torture. Because of his health condition, he could not talk to us,” Iqbal said.

“The police official said he did not get any information from Reza regarding the four-murder incident. But he would only release him or sent him to court under Section 54 if the family could pay the money within 24 hours.”

In the evening on May 20, Iqbal met with Inspector Arup, then in plainclothes, on an over bridge in front of the police station and gave him Tk250,000 that the family members could manage within that time. Rest of the money was supposed to be paid the next day when, the officer said, police would produce the youth at the court under Section 54.
How many more young men must die in the filthy hands of our police? Tk,250,000 wasnt enough to release him alive!! I count myself blessed to have not gone through what this poor guy went through! I detest them to the core.

I was once hit by a stone while riding train in Bangladesh. Luckily it was a smaller stone and it hit my chin and not in my eyes. As the stone was thrown from opposite direction against the running train, it hit it really hard in my chin. The marks stayed for a while.

This senseless act need to stop.

A special court in the Indian state of West Bengal has acquitted a Border Security Force (BSF) constable of murdering Felani Khatun on the border in January 2011.
The court said Amiya Ghosh was not guilty of shooting the Bangladeshi girl when she crossed the barbed-wire fence into Bangladesh from India, sources told our New Delhi correspondent yesterday.
Felani’s father Nurul Islam rejected the verdict and said that he would appeal to the government to take the matter to the international court.
He, however, said he learnt about the acquittal from the media and was yet to know it officially.

Those who thought that India would do justice to Felani murder, live in a dreamland. From the beginning this trial was eyewash, nothing else. India did mock trial only to look good in international media. No way they will punish their own soldier for killing a outsider. The other soldiers would get upset if that happens.

A top official of the International Crimes Tribunal Wednesday said that the draft of the verdict on BNP lawmaker Salauddin Quader Chowdhury was leaked few days before the court delivered it.
A general diary has also been filed with Shahbagh Police Station in this connection.
None however has been arrested yet.
The revelation came hot on the heels of a countrywide rumour that the verdict on the 64-year old BNP standing committee member was leaked and dictated one.
AKM Nasiruddin Mahmud, registrar of the ICT, made the revelation during a press briefing held on the tribunal premises.
Earlier in the morning, the Dhaka tribunal that awarded death penalty to Chowdhury for war crimes termed the alleged “leak” of the verdict as “a major conspiracy” involving a huge amount of money.
“The conspiracy was to make the tribunal controversial,” Justice Jahangir Hossain Selim, a member of the three-man panel of the International Crimes Tribunal-1 that held Chowdhury’s trial, said at the court.
Soon after the tribunal sentenced Chowdhury to death in the first-ever war crimes verdict against any BNP leader Tuesday, the convict’s wife and other family members showed newsmen on the court premises a document that they said was the leaked judgment.
The verdict was retrieved from the computer of the law secretary and that it was actually written by the law ministry, they claimed.
Talking on the claim of the BNP leader’s wife and defence counsels that the verdict was dictated one, the registrar said: “It’s not true.”
The tribunal, immediately after the allegation of leaked verdict was brought, launched an investigation to find out who was involved with it, the registrar said adding that they are yet to suspect anyone.
Meanwhile, about the claim, which remained talk of the town due to its quick sharing on different social networking websites,Justice Jahangir Hossain said that there was a deliberate move to make the tribunal controversial.
He took a few minutes before starting the war trial proceedings of Jamaat-e-Islami chief Motiur Rahman Nizami to pass his statement regarding the judgement leak claim.
“How easily people were deceived!” he said in a show of surprise at the claim that the verdict was drafted at the law ministry and was exactly the same one which was read out at the tribunal.
“Those who are trying to make Salauddin Quader’s verdict controversial are issuing comments without going through the full verdict.
“The choice of words and language (of the verdict and alleged leaked version) are totally different,” he pointed out.
“So far we have seen that the elder ones advise and their disciples carry out those. How come the law ministry officials who are of the rank of district judges dictate us, the High Court judges?”
“Are they more competent than us that we should need them to write the verdict?” he asked.

Finally justice served. Including me, many of us doubted proper punishment of Bishwajit murder case but good to see quick trial process and verdict. Now, catch rest of them and implement the punishment.

8 to die, 13 get life for Bishwajit murder

Eight Awami League supporters were awarded with the death penalty for murdering Old Dhaka tailor shop owner Biswajit Das on Wednesday.

Speedy Trials Tribunal 4 judge ABM Nizamul Haque passed the order for this sensational murder case in presence of the arrestees.

Six of the eight arrested were given death sentence while two among the 13 on the run were sentenced to walk the gallows. The remaining were sentenced for life.

The process was quick. Happy to see that nobody questioned the quick trial process or termed it another kangaroo court. No Sun ... no Moon...no Tara ... no Kerry... not even Jamat protested....no resolution passed by another foreign country protesting the verdict.... even HR watchdogs didn't barked.

Atleast in one case we all agree then.
