Badrinath and Wridhiman Saha (who was actually the reserve WK) make their debut. Laxman is also out with an injury.

A early chance to see what life will be like after the retirement of the big-four in the middle order

I am sorry but what chance? I thought Smith and Prince missed out on a big score on a placid pitch.

Prince's wicket was so unfortunate. short ball surprised him. It clipped the arm guard and was adjudged caught behind. Pathetic umpiring to say the least.

sure looks like that. they batted well to be honest. except harbhajan who lacked bite the other bowlers bowled well. never allowed amla and kallis to get away. restricting them to 3.2 run rate was a commendable job on a batting paradise.

forget abt this match.
What a prtnrshp.
This is the way to bat in tests,if there is no centuries than there is hardly any chance to win.

not at all. I'm sure you didn't watch the telecast, the ball hit the arm guard bang on the wrist. it was impossible not to give out for a field umpire. even the TV commies thought it was out. only from a completely different camera angle can one see that it hit the arm guard and not the gloves.

I watched the replay.

4.3 79.8 mph, Given out caught behind but it went of the arm-guard. Now then... now then .. What a ferocious delivery. Zaheer Khan serves up a well-directed bouncer at the face. A stunned Prince takes out the bottom-hand off the handle and offers the bat as a face-shield. The ball crashes into the arm-guard and pops up to Dhoni. It has been given out. Prince staggers out towards Smith, perhaps asking whether we have UDRS here. No. And off he goes. 5/1

That is Kallis's game. Play slowly but surely. Most of his innings are boring but very very effective. Amla started very slow. Much slower than Kallis. But then he caught him up (SR) in the last session. That is their game. With Steyn and others this is the best strategy. Two and a half day of batting with Dravid Laxman not there SA in driving seat.

thing is it was impossible to give it not out without the benefit of multiple camera angles and TV replay. even dickie bird would have given that out.
check it out yourself ! http://cricket-online.tv/south-afric...-day-1-nagpur/

on the issue of UDRS, ICC will have to start paying up for it, no use asking telecasters to foot the bill. see boycott's interview in CI.

kallis in fact scored at a brisk pace. he was in golden touch in the tour game too. it was amla who got bogged down a bit. the downside of the approach is that one good session can change the fortunes of this match. even though no wickets were lost, the simple fact that the bowlers didn't surrender and kept pegging away was heartening to see. except half an hour before tea, in no period of this day's play were the batsman dominating the bowlers. on this track you could hardly do anything other than bowl tight and hope the batsman makes a mistake. credit to kallis and amla they didn't and set SA for a superb platform for the best batting day i.e day 2.

there was something for the spinner, atleast for the wrist spinner. Misra was getting turn and bounce regularly but he failed to bowl it in right place. Two wicket a day doesnt suggest the pitch.

Neel vai, it was actually not out, I saw many difficult decisions like that deciding correctly by umpires.

of course it was not out. but could you tell it from the front view ? I think not. why blame the poor umpire then ? gould in fact gave two very good decision just before that, 2 very very close LBW appeals were not given. he did perform well as an umpire.

I have not watched any non-Indian play spin so beautifully ! A top notch innings by Kallis !
The Indian need to topple at least a couple of wickets in the first session , else they will be playing catch up rest of the test .

When Kallis and Amla start to bat, they never stop. Especially Kallis. He isn't human.

That's because he eats up too many many deliveries without scoring. There are way too many occasions where he has played in excess of 300 deliveries but scored only one third the runs. Block, pad, leave, block, pad, leave,...pad, block, leave...leave...
