Former Bangladesh Captain Khaled Mashud, who recently lost his place in the national squad has been picked for the Bangladesh A team tour in Sri Lanka.
The selectors also picked Sahagir Hossain Pavel who played as wicket-keeper in the recently completed series against England A for his impressive batting performances. Current Captain Tushar Imran will lead the side against the second string side of Sri Lanka.
Khaled Mashud requested the selectors not to select him for Englad A series due to personal reasons. Promising fast bowler Talha Jubair who made his test debut against South Africa back in 2002 returns to the A team after a long injury break.
Junaed Siddiquee, Marshal Ayub, Mohammad Shahjada, Nasiruddin Faruque and Ziaur Rahman who played in the latest series against England A failed to keep their place in the Sri Lanka bound squad.
National discards left-arm spinner Manzarul Islam Rana and seaming all-rounder Farhad Reza were rewarded for their domestic performances and will feature in the one day squad. They will join the team after completion of the unofficial four day test matches.
Bangladesh 'A' will leave Dhaka on March 16. They start their campaign on March 19 with the first unofficial Test at the Colts CC grounds in Colombo where they also play the second unofficial Test from March 25 and the first one-dayer on March 31.
The last two limited-over games will take places at the P Sara Stadium also in the Sri Lankan capital on April 2 and 4.
Selected players will report to the A Team coach Shaun Williams at the the National Academy House in Dhanmondi on March 14 at 6pm.

This is a good thinking by the selectors. This way sahagir can prove his mettle and challenge Mushfiq. Competition is healthy for the team.

It all boils down to what Mushfiq does on the 17th and onwards... I think the pressure is more on Mushfique ( and his selectors) than Mashud. The whole world will be watching him keep and definitely the issue of Mashud will be raised again when the commentators will compare him with. I think the world cup is the make it or break it for both the M's

I am confused, where is the batting of this team? I dont see any of know/upcoming batsmen. Missing players like Marshal, Imtiaz. Plus it definitly needs Rana and Forhad.
This team will score poorly.

They have five specialist batsmen in total in Mehrab, Tushar, Nazimuddin, Nadif and Jahirul Islam. This team have way too many allrounders for long version of the game. I am guessing they are probably going to play Sagir as a specialist batsman which can be suicidal.

I am just dumbfounded by this decision. A-team tours are mainly for giving upcoming players some experiences at a level higher than domestic circuits. What can a player with Mashud's experience and age gain from playing cricket at this level ?
If the selectors want to keep Mashud match fit, asking him to keep playing in NCL would have been good enough, (as Sadi says) stronger teams don't give harder edges. If it is concerning his batting, Mashud's form with bat at this point is so poor that he rarely goes beyond single digit scores against local teams nowadays, what good can he do for A-team with this kind of form ?
Most importantly, according to Prothom-Alo, DW requested Mashud be left out of the national team largely because he is a distraction to other players in the team. Since A-team is entirely made of players in their early twenties or even below twenty, Pilot's presence may be more harmful to this bunch (especially since they are touring another country) than it could have been to national team.

Mashud would add valuable experience to the A team.
But I kind of feel sorry for Pilot with him being in the A team. He has been all around the Bangladesh cricket team. But with his lack of performance, I think that we get the young youngs in even at a larger stage. Kind of like the Aresne Wenger strategy.
I still remember him hitting that six against Kenya that brought a dramatic change in our cricket team.Remembering how he kissed that bat after. Cant believe its been so long.
