Default Recommendation for Tourist (Visiting Bangladesh)

Hi Folks,

I am going to Bangladesh briefly. Looking for recommendation for you guys on the followings:

1. Books: Historical books on Bangladesh, liberation, culture, food, auto biography on past leaders , political. Not interested in novel please.

2. Restaurant: Looking for more deshi authentic food rather than italian/french/korean/western food.

3. Place to visit: close to dhaka. Not interested in high profile modern resorts.

4. Anything unique that you can recommend?

Thanks

IMO it's over hyped. Kachi Biryani is a must though and available at many outlets . Also the khasir leg at any large Star restora was good.

I also enjoyed the khatta mix at BBQ tonight in Dhanmondi Rd 27 was amazing if you like spicy curry

Mama, you going to visit Dhaka?
Then you must go to Comilla Khadi Bitaan in Science Laboratory/Elephant Road and bring me a nice Comilla's Khaddar Panjabi...the kind that when you wear it in summer during Kurbani, you sweat like a butcher. You can get me a large and in Ghia color.
Shundor naksha jatey thakey, okay?

Also mama, Narikel-er Borfi khaitey iccha hoi..please tell Nanu-amma to send me a tiffin-carrier bhorti narikel-er Borfi with you. I will pick you up from JFK, Virginia porjonto tantey hobey naa...

Ohh also if there is any Kurbanir meat left...please bring me some kala goru shukna bhuna wrapped in Ittefaq newspaper. Also a Jamdani sari from Dhaka Jamdaani House on Baily road...for your bhagni! O khub Jaamdaani saari pochondo korey.

Ooh also, Jodi Khaati mithai + chhana pawa jai, or Chhanna Mookhi, Or you stopping by Comilla or Brahmanbaira?...maybe not, just a small box of Premium's sweet...mixed variety hoiley bhalo hoi.

Also some Tetul and a fried Bowal maach...put it in your suitcase.

I say, don't come to Dhaka at this time. You'll get Chikunghania. If you still haven't heard about it do some Google. And yes, indulging yourself into desi style oily foods will give you bad stomach. Keep a strip of pepto bishmol alongside.

Also try a very good bookstore - Omni Books in Dhanmoni....I am not sure the street name...please look it up online...excellent bookstore, on Bnagladesh history, architecture, art, archeology and all manily in English. There used to be a branch shop at the Hazrat Shahjalal - but unfortunately it is closed...Flying Bangalis wouldn't buy books no more - Perfume, yes. Books, no!...
