best overseas player ever graced our league
who do you guy's think the best ( performance wise)
overseas player ever graced our cricket league.
here's some names i can remember:
1.SAMARASHEKHARA
2.Steve Tikolo
3.Wasim akram
4.Shahid afridi
5.Monjur elahi
6.Selim elahi
7.Atawor rehman
8.Shahed mahmood
9.Tarek mahmood
10.Asif mujtaba
11.Duleep mendis
12.arjuna ranatunga
13.Arbindo de silva
14 asoka de silva (that moron who played for Abahani
& stood against bd whenever he got the chance as an umpire)
15.Rosham mahanama
16.Hasan Tilakratne
17.Neil fairbrother
18. Illingworth
19. Phill defraitas
20.H streak
21.Marvan atapattu(?)
22.Ajay jadeja
23 AND RAMAN LAMBA
am i right to write the name of atapattu as a overseas player played in dhaka league.
as far as i can remember i have a fading memory of atapattu scoring a match winning 71 or 91 against abahani for brother's union in the mid-eighties.
to me it was samarashekhara.he single handedly won the championships for abahani many times. except him there were two other perennial winners in tikolo & the Indomitable Raman Lamba.
what do u think?

impressive!
the good, great thing was some of these world class players played in our league when, our national team weren't even playing test cricket.
shame these days there aren't many player of these quality in club circuit in bangladesh.
but i bet most of these player only played few matches.
Neil fairbrother
the great lancastian, who did he play for.
i used to watch league cricket when i in bangladesh, the last game i saw was when raman lamba got hit on the head.
i saw steve tikolo playing some good inning.

fairbrother & along with illingworth used to play for Abahani...in fact allmost all the big names were roped by Abahani..they really had great overseas network at that time.
Mohammedan also brought some heavywieghts in de silva, ranatunga & STeve Tikolo.
What a majestic player raman lamba was...

Yeah... if only more players of their calibre still played in BD leagues our players would vastly improve.

Lamba got in the Dhaka league. Performance wise, Steve Tikolo has had some record breaking knocks for the Black and whites.

u're right.. lamba got hit on head very unfortunately while fielding in a local derby of Abahani-Mohammdean .
he was playing for abahani & a fierce shot from Opee (most probably he played only that season for mohamedan) hit him on the head. he was in comma when doctors declared him clinically dead after a few houres .he was in artificial life support till next day ,after the arriving of his wife from new delhi doctors withdraw his artificial life support system.
he was one of most favorite overseas player ever played in dhaka.
God bless his soul.

You forgot Pakistani opener Imran Farhat in your list, who scored a first class double hundred for Dhaka and shared many partnerships with Habibul Bashar.

it was kind of short leg position, where he was fielding
i was sitting in the vip section, the bowler was bowling from the end where abahani fans were sitting,
the spinner bowled a half tracker and mehrab pulled it,
raman lamba got it on side of his head, the players gathered round and as far i remember he walked off the field on his own with one of the club workers.
monents he went to hospital for feeling dizzy,
what i heard later was that he was aked to wear helmet by the umpire but he said he used to field in that position without any protection in ranji trophy.

Waqar Younis (remember the scandal involving hookers)...
and more recently Yuvraj Singh...
and Ramesh Ratnayake played for Mohammedans (famous for his white head band and four-byes that our keepers failed to grab)... i think Ravi Ratnayake played too...

cant remember wyounis ever played in league.he played here for omar qureshi eleven on several occassions..didn't he?
ya..now remember ramaesh & ravi ratnayake. ramesh was popular among the black & whites..
cris cairns also featured in a match for abahani..not sure whether that's a fact or was just a stunt by the then abahani officials

Can't remember Ravi Ratnayeke. Ramesh Ratnayeke played. i remember once Ajay Jadeja, Arshad Ayub and Raju Kulkarni (!?) being flown in to play one match only.
I guess Akram would have to be characterized as the best overseas player who played in our leagues.
On a side note, and this has been discussed elsewhere I think, the diminution of the Dhaka league has damaged our cricket in my opinion.

oh..the incident with opee and raman lamba...
reminds me of good ol school years...
according to opee, ( whom i knew thru being in the same school) lamba was pissing him off big time being in such a close proximity to him and sledgin his a** off....(no offence intended to the departed soul, part of game i guess)
lamba was sayin, apparently directing to opee, that he wouldnt need the helmet cuz opee cudnt pull ... and he's safe in his fielding position....
lamba was even daring opee to play a shot towards him so that he(lamba) can catch him out... and opee's bn waiting for a while to do so...just to teach him a lesson...
so when he got the right ball...opee aparently pulled it hard ....so that it goes past lamba and shuts his mouth....
but unfortunately...it hit right on his head..the rest is history....
According to opee,,when he went to see lamba in the hospital, someone pointed him out to lamba's widow...
and she just gave him a long cold look....
and even to someone like him, (one of the world's biggest mo**er fu***r i've ever known !!!)...it send him shiver down to his spine...and trust me...he looked changed for a few days...guess it shooked him a bit...
but then again after few days...he was back to his old shelf, doing what he did best...(and i mean not cricket)
....sorry guys...if i was talkin rubbish...but the whole lamba opee incident just shot me back to school years and made me a bit nostalgic !!!
...............dont worry...im already recovering.......

chankhar pool e padel mere pouche bareeee.......
just last year he served a suspension for breaching a contract after taking money from two teams simulteniously.
u know, he needed those bucks after running out of his money as the "LENTILS" were sky-rocketting as ever & chasing 'Murgis' after' Murgis' cost u a lot .
let's hope this Luis but talented cricketer get the quality Lentil & Murgi & concentrate on his career

He is the best player ever played in our league but his performence was really below par.
One is the best performer in Dhaka league is Ashok Malhotra although he hardly manage to get into indian side.
