‘300’

The Good:

Good direction, brilliant special effects, lots of gory action, although it got a little repetitive. On the whole, 300 is visually very impressive, stylised and a great transition from a comic book. That's a reason enough to go watch it.

The Bad:

Where do I start? The story initially is inspiring, but it has no depth. I was expecting a historical epic and this far from it. It’s melodramatic, filled with unreal battle sequences, pompous chest-thumping dialogues and gung ho shouts of bravado by ultra-macho, noble Spartans warriors, the manliest of men, who would in reality be heavily armoured in battle but preferred to wear speedos instead.

Then there were Persians, the bad guys, hordes of evil, ugly enemies resembling Orcs and Trolls after a frenzied Saturday night. They fought, actually more like ‘ran into' the Spartans like a wave of mentally challenged midget zombies, with no tactics or formation. Rarely have I seen such a comical exaggeration of an evil army. Even Greek writings tell that Persians were a uniform and disciplined force.

Angry rhino, circus elephants, mutated giants, saws for hands? Why not bears with laser eyes?

Xerxes, portrayed as a camp, bald, oversized freak of nature wearing a bikini brief and a ton of piercing. It couldn’t get more ludicrous.

Historically Spartans were no freedom lovers. They were, quite ironically the first fascist state, had a repressive caste system, and notoriously degraded slaves, who were also forced into battle. Leonardis claimed it’s a stand against barbarism, so what part of killing weak newborn babies make Spartans more civilised?

The Ugly:

Granted ‘300’ is based off a comic book and both Frank Miller and director Zack Snyder admitted it is “purposefully” fiction, but there is a limit. ‘300’ doesn’t know what kind of movie it wants to be. It tries to fuse a historical event with action, drama, fantasy altogether in an overly inflated manner. Let me open the can of worms, there is also an underlying issue of plausible political and racial stroking. The portrayal of Persians in the movie could be perceived as a possibly deliberate insult or aggravation towards modern Iran.

As the magnanimous Spartan Queen quite eloquently puts ‘Freedom isn’t free’. Ringing any bells? I bet Mr. God-told-so and his rightist minions are creaming their pants by now. It is apparently “no secret” that Frank Miller supports right-wing politics. Is it a coincidence, given the political situation and timing of this film’s release? I’ll leave that up to you.

Is ‘300’ a masterpiece? No. It’s an over-hyped, but visually stunning, adrenaline-pumping “action” flick. Even then it doesn’t compare to the likes Lord of the Rings or Gladiator.

I am big fan of Frank Miller’s Sin City, but 300 has quite frankly (no pun intended) disappointed me.

A must-read 300 parody. I suggest you watch the film first to really understand the humour.

Just saw 'Flags of our fathers' - how a picture can make such a big impact. Doesn't matter that the picture was taken for a SECOND flag and not all the folks in the picture got their due credit. I like Clint Eastwood's movies. Let me clarify that, I like the works of Director Clint Eastwood. He was not half as good as an actor.

You gotta love those politicians and the Public Relations farms that can twist the whole story based on a picture and some video clips.

looking forward to "The Namesake". Liked the book, and could relate to a lot of it. Hope they won't make a jogakhichuri out of the movie.

Just watched the movie "provoked". I found it stunning. It is a must watch for socially conscious people. I thought Aishwarya played the abused wife role to the T. She was so brilliantly innocent that there were times when I felt like going into the screen and hugging her. Super movie for emotional people like myself. I still havent seen the namesake and still looking out for the torrent for that one but people should not miss out on provoked if this the kind of cinema that you like.

The Namesake was a good movie. It still had something for people who'd read the book beforehand (like me), so that just tells you that for people who didn't it would probably have more to offer.

Default This is PERSIA!!

Prince of Persia: Sands of Time

Although great games don't necessarily make great movies and vice versa, I'm very excited about Prince of Persia.

Announced at DICE in 2004, the Prince of Persia movie is being produced by Jerry Bruckheimer (Pirates of the Caribbean) for Walt Disney Pictures, with Transformers director Michael Bay. Its script is being written by Jordan Mechner, creator of the original Prince of Persia game, and The Day After Tomorrow screenplay scribe Jeffrey Nachmanoff.

LatinoReview.com got to read an early draft of the script and from the sound of it seems to love it already.

Quote:
Bruckheimer and Bay - back together again for Prince of Persia, which is epic in its scope. Disney has got a monster hit and another potential blockbuster franchise on their hands. Prince of Persia can be as fun as Pirates of the Caribbean. Even if you never played any of the games, if you’re into Arabian Nights, Aladdin, Sinbad, Ali Baba and his 40 Thieves, or old-school Arabian adventures, then Prince of Persia is for you.

I am going to keep the spoilers absolutely lite on this one to not piss off Bruckheimer, Bay and Disney.

What is also super-cool about the script is the use of PARKOUR. Parkour is a physical art of French origin, the aim of which is to move from point A to point B as efficiently and quickly as possible, using principally the abilities of the human body. It is meant to help one overcome obstacles, which can be anything in the surrounding environment — from branches and rocks to rails and concrete walls — so Parkour can be practiced in both rural and urban areas.

The Prince of Persia games utilized Parkour and it is cool to see it intact in the script and a part of the storyline. That chase scene in Casino Royale utilized Parkour and I can’t highly recommend enough the Pierre Morel French action fiml DISTRICT B13, which is one hell of an action film. The way these stuntmen move without the use of special effects and wires is just breathtaking.

Parkour is finally going to be given a worldwide audience with Prince of Persia. Because of the incredible athleticism and shape you have to be in to practice Parkour, I would think that narrows down the choices to play Prince of Persia’s lead character – DASTAN.

One of the producers said in the trades that Prince of Persia is a 9th century Indiana Jones and it reads and feels like one.

HB, just noticed your thread abt House of Sand and Fog. Agree with you fully. Since I watched it last September, till date I'd rate it as my most favourite movie.

Since i'm an outright cheapskate, (and because no one else wants to watch it because they're oh so not into Shrek allofasudden), today was the best day to have gone and watched Shrek 3 matinee for $6! Feeling annoyed at myself for this now!
Oh well I'll put it off till tomorrow like I've been doing for the past 3 weeks!

Tehsin Bhai, Letters from Iwo Jima awaits you. Watch the other side of Flags of the Fathers. It was very distressing at the end for me to watch.

I love time travelling movies. I have seen many. Frequency is one of my top fav movies. It's quite old movie. For those of you who haven't see it and not really into sci-fi, trust me you won't be disappointed.
you can read more about it here http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0186151/

Butterfly Effect is my all time fav. I still talk about the ending of that movie with a friend of mine who I watched it with. Brilliantly written.

I've watched it, liked it.

Shafin's thread about world's heaviest man reminded me of a kinda similar movie "Super Size Me". It's more like a documentary, but enjoyable. Watch it if you haven't already.

Man on fire is a great film, really like the acting of Denzel, Inside Man another good film. Watched SpiderMan 3 the other day, wasnt bad, but nothing special, after you watch the cartoons, the films dont match up for me, but thats with most superhero films.

I absolutely loved Illusionist. Though the plots are drastically different, it reminds me of Usual Suspects. You feel terribly cheated at the end of the movie, but in a heart-warming way. I'll even go as far as to say this is my all-time magic favourite.

The Prestige started off very promising. Even though Johansson's weak acting ruined a significant number of scenes, the story was intriguing enough to overshadow that deficit. But it's the last 10 minutes that ruined it for me. The ending was equally disappointing. Also, what eludes me is how they misappropriated Scarlett's talents. She could have had a far more glamourous role. Instead, you had to see her in unattractive clothes and listen to her nauseatingly coughy voice.

Watched "V for Vendetta" ..comparatively old movie(2006). Mostly the theme was anarchism vs fascism. Both Hugo Weaving and Natalie Portman acted good.
