Shashi Lodge, Mymensingh
Babu Maharaja Surya Kanta Acharya built this magnificently designed the palace and named it after his son Shashi Kanta Acharya. The lodge was razed to the ground by an earthquake on June 1, 1897. Later Shashi Kanta re-constructed the lodge. During the earthquake, the "musical staircase" of the lodge that led its users into a "romantic world" was also destroyed. But being a man with a modern outlook Babu Shashi Kanta could not forget the "musical staircase" and thus set it up again at the lodge at a cost of Tk three lakh. It was bought from Paris, France.
Precious materials, which hold historical values, are scattered at every step of the lodge. Situated on nine acres of land, the beautifully design palace attracts visitors.

Mughal edifices of Mohammadpur
A few kilometres to the north of Peelkhana was the Sarai Jafarbad-Katasur area, possibly a caravan route along the river. A small urban settlement in this area is evident from its geographic and strategic location, origin of the name(s) of the locality, and the remnants of few Mughal period structures, particularly two mosques, one of which was demolished recently, and two tombs, one of which was converted to a mosque.
The style of the late 17th century structure of the Satgambuz Masjid falls within the type of traditional three-domed oblong Shaista Khani mosques, which is very common among most surviving historic mosques in Dhaka. Built on a spacious and solid podium, it has many elements resembling those in Khwaja Shahbaz Mosque, Khan Mohammed Mridha's Mosque, and the mosque within the Lalbagh Fort. Like those structures, this too has three large domes- a bigger one in the middle flanked by two smaller ones.

Court Building,Chittagong

The Parir Pahar (Fairy's Hill) is one such high site, on which sits the Chittagong Court Building. It is the largest single building atop a hill before Bengal was divided. The British purchased the 25-acre property of hill and valley from Zamindar Akil Chandra Sen and built the two storied red brick building in 1892-98.

While I was posting the pictures, it made me extremely sad to see the pitiful state of most of the historical architectures of our country. The government along with private organizations should take immediate steps to protect these heritage sites. These places can easily be converted into major tourist spots and will work as an inspiration for our next generation.
Maybe we expatriates can do something about it! Any ideas?

nayeem007 !
excellent. i was also thinking along that line. Although 85 percent of the images are well known, i must confess thatsome of the pictures have revealed stuff i did'nt know about. I really would like to see some promotional activity to highlight the plight of these structures.
Anyway, we can talk more. Please check your u2u.

Ekushe [21] February
Photos: Courtsey of www.webbangladesh.com
Shaheed Dibash The 21st day of February (ekushey february) is being officially observed as the Shaheed Dibash (Martyrs' Day) since the emergence of Bangladesh. On this day in 1952, students and youths, rose in protest against the imposition of Urdu by the then government as the lone state language of Pakistan. This was viewed by the Bangali people as a conspiracy against their culture. When the students brought out a procession on the day in violation of official prohibitory order, the police fired on the demonstrators killing a number of students and members of the public. Abul Barkat, Abdus Salam, Abdul Jabbar, Rafiq Uddin Ahmed and a number of unknown others lost their lives...
