Because our local players are not just crap they are ultra crap.

The reason they opted for an extra foreign player is because they added a whole new team! our local players talent pool was already low last year with only nats player performing. Now with the new team, you will see another 10-12 local players added. So all in all, the overall attraction, competitiveness is boosted while more local players playing the tournament

Also as per rumors Zakir Hasan Mehdi Maruf Raju might play for Surma. Zakir is a bad choice unless he plays in the top order. But dont think Dhaka will let mehdi maruf go

বাচ্চালোগ, বাজাও তালিয়া, নাচো হেলিয়া-দুলিয়া। বিপিএল এখন বিশ্ব চ্যাম্পিয়ন টুর্নামেন্ট! গত আসরের আগে বিপিএল গভর্নিং কাউন্সিল দাবী করেছিল, ক্রিকেট বিশ্বের দ্বিতীয় সেরা টি-টোয়েন্টি টুর্নামেন্ট বিপিএল। শুনে অনেকের চোখ কপালে উঠেছিল। তারা নিন্দুক, চোখ তাদের কপালেই থাকে। চক্ষু কোটর থাকে অন্ধকার। এজন্যই কিছুই দেখে না। ইয়াব্বড় একটু টুর্নামেন্ট, মাত্র দুইটা শহরেই খেলে শেষ করা হয়। তার মধ্যে একটা মাঠেই হয় ৮০-৯০ ভাগ ম্যাচ। চাট্টিখানি কথা! এত বড় কলিজা যেমন আর কোনো মাঠের নাই, এত বিশাল কৃতিত্বও আর কোনো টুর্নামেন্টের আয়োজকদের নাই। অন্যান্য শহরে খেলা না দেওয়ার ক্ষেত্রে যদিও আবাসন-যোগাযোগ-মাঠ, নানারকম সমস্যার কথা বলা হয় , তবু কিছু লোকে বলে কিনা, লাভের অঙ্ক যাতে কম না হয়, প্রোডাকশন খরচ যাতে না বাড়ে, এজন্যই নাকি খেলা ছড়িয়ে দেওয়া হয় না। আজব লোকজন। কৃচ্ছতাসাধন বোঝে না। মিতব্যয়ি হতে পরে না বলেই জাতির আজ এই অবস্থা। বিপিএল বুঝিয়ে দেয় মিতব্যয়ি কিভাবে হতে হয়। টুর্নামেন্ট শুরুর আগে বলা হয় ২২ -২৪ বা ২৬টি ক্যামেরায় খেলা দেখানো হবে। অথচ গোটা দুনিয়াকে চমকে দিয়ে অর্ধেক ক্যামেরাতেই কাজ সারা হয়। কয়টা টুর্নামেন্টের টেকনিশিয়ানরা এতটা স্কিলফুল ? শুরুর আগে বলা হয়, জিং বেলস থাকবে, এলইডি স্টাম্পস, স্পাই ক্যাম থাকবে। টুর্নামেন্ট শুরু হলে দেখা যায়, ওসব কিছুই নাই। আসলে নাই আমাদের দেখার চোখ। সবই থাকে, কিন্তু অতি উন্নত প্রযুক্তির। অদৃশ্য জিং বেলস, অদৃশ্য স্পাই ক্যাম থাকে। জাদু জানে বিপিএল! টুর্নামেন্টের অব্যবস্থাপনা, জোড়াতালি, অপেশাদারীত্ব নিয়ে মিডিয়া নিউজ করে। বরাবরই মিডিয়া এই টুর্নামেন্টের পেছনে লেগে আছে। অথচ টুর্নামেন্ট শেষে আয়োজকদের তৃপ্তির ঢেকুর যে ঢাকের শব্দে দেশময় ছড়িয়ে যায়, মিডিয়া সেসব দেখে না। যাই হোক, এত সাফল্যের পরও দ্বিতীয় সেরা বলে দাবী করা আসলে গভর্নিং কাউন্সিলের বিনয়। তবে নিজেদের এভাবে আড়ালে রাখার দিন ফুরোলো। আইপিএলে যেখানে একাদশে চার জন বিদেশি খেলতে পারে, বিপিএলে খেলবে পাঁচজন বিদেশি। আনুষ্ঠানিক ভাবেই তাই এখন আইপিএলকে পেছনে ফেলে সবার ওপরে বিপিএল। বেশি বোঝা অনেকেই বলছেন, বিপিএল আগের নিয়মে ফিরে গিয়ে দেশের ক্রিকেটকেই পিছিয়ে নিচ্ছে। তারা বোঝে না, বাঘ যখন দুই কদম পেছনে যায়, সেটি আসলে সামনে লাফানোর জন্য! সামনেই দেশের ক্রিকেটে অপেক্ষায় উন্নতিই উন্নতি। গোলা ভরা বোলার, পুকুর ভরা ব্যাটসম্যান! যদিও বলা হচ্ছে, ফ্র্যাঞ্চাইজিদের চাপে বাধ্য হয়ে ৫ জনের নিয়ম করতে হয়েছে। মতমত দেওয়া ৭ ফ্র্যাঞ্চাইজির ৫টিই নাকি ৫ জন করে বিদেশি চেয়েছে। এটাও আসলে গভর্নিং কাউন্সিলের বিনয়। ফ্র্যাঞ্চাইজিগুল কত কিছু চায়, কত-শত আব্দার করে, সব তো গভর্নিং কাউন্সিল শোনে না। এটা কেন শুনবে? আসলে দেশের ক্রিকেটের ভবিষ্যতের কথা ভেবে, টুর্নামেন্টর ভাবমূর্তির কথা ভেবে এবং জাঁকজমক করে তুলতে তারা নিজেরাই এই নিয়ম করেছে। কিন্তু তারা যেহেতু প্রচারের আলো চায় না, আড়ালে থেকেই দেশের ক্রিকেটের জন্য কাজ করতে চায়, তাই এত মহান একটা কাজের কৃতিত্ব্ও ফ্র্যাঞ্চাইজিদের দিয়েছে। ত্যাগের এমন নজীর পৃথিবীর ইতিহাসে বিরল। ৮ দলের বিশাল টুর্নামেন্ট মানসম্পন্ন পর্যাপ্ত দেশি ক্রিকেটার কোথায়? লোকে বোঝে না, কিন্তু গভর্নিং কাউন্সিল তো বোঝে! যদিও একাদশে মাত্র একজন-দুজন বিদেশি নিয়েও ঢাকা প্রিমিয়ার লিগ ১২ দল নিয়ে চলে আসছে বছরের পর বছর, মানসম্পন্ন দেশি ক্রিকেটারের অভাব হয়নি, বরং ক্রিকেটীয় দিক থেকে ঘরোয়া ক্রিকেটের সবচেয়ে প্রতিদ্বন্দ্বীতা ূর্ণ, কঠিন ও মানসম্পন্ন টুর্নামেন্ট বলে বিবেচিত, তবু গভর্নিং কাউন্সিল বিপিএলের মযার্দা সমুন্নত রাখতে বদ্ধ পরিকর। দেশের ক্রিকেটারদের একাদশে খেলতে হলে কঠিন প্রতিযোগিতা করে খেলতে হবে। উঠতি বা সম্ভাবনাময় কেউ বাইরে বসে থাকুক, সমস্যা নেই। এটা বিপিএল একাদশ, ফালতু জাতীয় দল বা আন্তর্জাতিক ক্রিকেটের চেয়েও কঠিন। বুঝতে হবে। ছেলের হাতের মোয়া নয়। হ্যাঁ, ৫ জন বিদেশি থাকায় বিদেশের রাম-শ্যাম-যদু-মধু-অগা-মগা-চগা খেলে যাবে। এটাও উদারতার আরেকটি উদাহরণ। নিজেদের ক্রিকেটের উন্নতি তো অনেক হলো। এবার বিপিএলের মত বিশ্বমানের টুর্নামেন্টে খেলে অন্যরাও একটু এগিয়ে যাক। নইলে তো কদিন পর বাংলাদেশের সঙ্গে প্রতিযোগিতা করার মত দলই থাকবে না! হোক ক্রিকেট খেলা, বাংলাদেশ তবু ফাঁকা মাঠে গোল দেয় না। আর মানবতার ব্যাপারও আছে। অনেক দেশ আছে, যেখানে বিদেশিরা যায় না, সেখানকার ক্রিকেটাররা টাকা-পয়সা বেশি পায় না। ওরা কিছু করে খাক! বিপিএল এখন ক্রিকেট বিশ্বের কারেন্ট জাল। ঝাঁকে ঝাঁকে জাটকা এখানে আটকা পড়বে না, ধরা পড়বে বেশি বেশি বিদেশি! গভর্নিং কাউন্সিল বলে দিয়েছে, বিদেশি ক্রিকেটার নিবন্ধনের সংখ্যা ও সময়ে কোনো বাধ্যবাধকতা নেই। যে কোনো সময় যত জন ইচ্ছা যেভাবে পারা যায়, বিদেশি ক্রিকেটার নিবন্ধন করানো যাবে। জাতিসংঘের সদস্য হতে নানা বাধা পেরোতে হলেও বিপিএল সংঘে কোনো বাধা নেই। বিশ্ব ভাতৃত্বের এমন উদাহরণ দ্বিতীয়টি আর নেই। এবারই শান্তিতে নোবেল পাওয়ার জোর দাবীদার বিপিএল। তো, গভর্নিং কাউন্সিল যতই উদারতা দেখিয়ে এখনও নিজেদের দ্বিতীয় দাবী করুক, গোটা ক্রিকেট দুনিয়া এখন চিৎকার করে বলবে, "বিপিএল তুমিই বস, বিপিএল তুমিই সেরা... তোমার কাছে আমরা সবাই ভেড়া।" গভর্নিং কাউন্সিলের দাবী শুনে নিন্দুকেরা বলে, আসলেই বিপিএল বিশ্বের দুই নম্বর টুর্নামেন্ট... খাঁটি "২ নম্বর!" নিন্দুকের মুখে ছাই, বিপিএলের জয়গান গাই! সিরাজউদ্দৌলার বাংলার আকাশে ছিল দূযোর্গের ঘনঘটা, বিপিএলের বাংলার আকাশে এখন আনন্দের ল্যাটাপেটা...!

What I don't understand is why do we have 8 teams? India is 22 x the size of Bangladesh, yet IPL has 8 teams. Eventually I would like to see home-away fixtures, but we are no where close to having 8 proper facilities.

Money, politics. At the end of the day every business owner wants to have a bite of BPL, good for their ego, rare chance to be with world famous players, be in the limelight, get red carpet seating near the boundaries...and what not.
BPL should be only 6 teams given the limited player pool. But as always BCB has to massage egos of directors, corporates. Wonder how many BCB directors have say/ownership/involvement with these franchises.

The 5 player theory particularly has detrimental effect when some of these foreign players end up batting in important positions, captaining, fielding in key positions and sometimes even pitching in with the ball.
I remember in the first edition Ahmed Shezad was even bowling regular leg spin for Barisal. At the end we dont want BPL to be a breeding ground for foreign players. Thats where BCB will go wrong.

Instead of 5 foreigners, we should have 4 foreigners and a U-19 rule, where each team has to field atleast one youngster under 19. Would have been good for development.

Sometimes we complain too much about BPL.
BPL is our own and its still relatively new. We should be proud of BPL and support it. BCB should think about our cricket's interest first and business matter as second. Yuo dont need fading overpriced supserstar in BPL. They should play for IPL. You need good young players from different counties (including associates) in BPL to make it interesting. And yes there should be a limitation of 4 foreign players to make sure our local players can play in key roles.
