well, to say the least, playing at home is not as bad as playing against associates. both of them, though, bad. no doubt about it.

The idea is a nonsense anyway. How can you have promotion and relegation from something that isn't even a proper league?

"But although there may be a leaning towards the idea, the notion of two divisions failed even to get to the table because of the potential financial impact on the game as a whole."

"A small number of teams drive the economic health of cricket," explained an ICC spokesman yesterday, "and if we pushed one of those into a lower division we risk cutting cricket off at the knees."

... very simple facts!
Cricket is still far behind other top sports of the world compared by popularity..
If the game wants to survive.. it has to get rid of these hen-tier and ten-tier systems.. even the idea of it!! :duh:

Default yeah...

not only does cricket need to keep Zimbabwe and Bangladesh (althought the Zims need to get their act together), but they should be more worried about getting more test teams rather than less. lets face it, the ICC is all about 10 teams (and kenya tho they rarely play). I agree whole heartedly with people who want to expand test status to 16 teams by 2007. That will make things more interesting. Also, that way the weaker 8 nations will get stronger and their morale will be boosted by winning games against each other.

The idea of 16 teams in 2 divisions of 8 make a lot of sense, at least for ODIs. 2 teams from each division will either move up or down every couple of years, eg. They can also contest the quadrennial tournaments like the world cup, etc. However, the problem will be that none of the Big 8 teams now will want to be relegated because they will feel far superior to the 2nd division teams. Without promotion and relegation, this won't work.

as a followup thought, I guess the top two in the second division and the bottom two in the first division could go into a play-off - with the winners moving up. That way you only get promoted if you are better than the teams getting demoted. Don't know if that makes any sense, though

Remarkable that after all the fuss with 20/20 it is still Test matches that have solid followers in UK. In this respect we should emulate this culture instead of too much emphasis on ODis. Besides the hyped up 2 tier debate it is the true test pundits who also really want to make sure we get quality test matches.

To be honest this playing at home format smacks even more of cultural elitism and xenophobia than the 2 division system, it's like they are saying 'don't come into our countries, we don't want you stinking up the place'.
