Expectations Vs Reality !
Expectation: Living in abroad means lots of fun !
Reality: No less than living in a hell.
Expectation: Living in Sydney, earning good A$, having degrees is enough to attract hotties.
Reality: Those are not necessary if you know the game. I know many people who hardly have a decent job, hardly any money but hangs around with hotties all the time.
Expectation: Before coming to Sydney, i expected to meet Australian people.
Reality: I got shocked when i saw Sydney streets are full of Chinese people. For a second, i thought i came to China, not Australia.
Expectation: I expected high rises building in all the suburb just as in Dhaka.
Reality: There are only few high rises building in the City, hardly any 2 storey building in the suburb areas.
Expectation: Having a Masters degree will fetch me a good job.
Reality: Master degree is just a piece of paper stating your name, your university and passing year, nothing else. Oh and, few more lines in your resume
Please share your experiences, what you had expected and what did you get in return, not necessarily everyone's experience will be same

BHUMIKA: I moved back to Bangladesh permanently after spending almost all of my life in the US. I am blessed to have parents who exposed me to our language, history and culture and I grew up nurturing my deep love and admiration for Bangladeshis, Bangladesh and the values she stands for. My occasional trips back to the country until 1983, irrespective of the tragic political situation in the country, only reinforced my rather idealized view of my country because of my family and their close friends.
Thanks to them, I never lost track of my Bangladeshiness even when I sought out to reinvent myself through the discovery of my purely existential essence utterly devoid of any frame of reference. I knew who I was and where I came from even through a period of 15 years when I had little to no communal contact with either Bangladeshis or Bangalis.
I always knew I was going to come back for good and try my best to give back to the motherland what she blessed me with, and the cathartic impact those blessings have had in my sense of self esteem in both good and challenging times away from her. As a proud child of Freedom Fighters, I saw serving my country to the best of my ability as a sacred duty that defines me. Turning my back on my responsibility to help my country -- as a child of our own Washingtons, Jeffersons, Adamses and Franklins -- was never an acceptable option for me personally and for many more in my generation aware of who we are, what we represent and how we got here.
So, it was never a question of whether I was coming back but when. I came back for good in 2002. Here's my list of expectations versus reality:
1. Expectation: Strengthening of virtues such as modesty and scholarship; Reality: Glorification of vanity and often ill gotten wealth.
2. Expectation: Maturation of morality and ethics; Reality: Widespread acceptance of moral and ethical relativity coupled with religious intolerance and celebration of Idiocratic social and administrative models.
3. Expectation: Substantial institutional development in rural Bangladesh easing migration to Dhaka; Reality: Accelerated migration to Dhaka because of lack of opportunities in rural Bangladesh.
After living here for a few years, some positive things also surfaced, much to my pleasant surprise They are:
1. Expectation: Hopelessness and cynicism in the face of endemic injustice faced by a majority of our population; Reality: Heroic resilience of that marginalized yet peaceful and wise population never short of faith or sacrifice especially when times are tough.
2. Expectation: Loss of national identity amongst the youth after decades of BNP/Jamaat/JP disinformation, misguidance, sectarianism and puritanical religious deviance; Reality: Strong sense who we really are amongst the middle class and rural youth, most of them quite pious, and their powerful and decisive resistance to those sectarian, anti-Independence and anti-Constitutional elements.
3. Expectation: Kazi Habibul Bashar Shumon; Reality: Shakib Al Hasan Faisal.

Naimul
-get out of cabramatta or parramatta if you want to see people other than asian immigrants!
-you get a job using your bachelors, and then get your company to fund your masters
-high rises, now that's how you retain the beauty of a city...CBD with big highrises, and residential suburbs retaining their open and leafy feel with restrictions placed on the height of structures
-stop being grumpy, you're just upset because you don't have someone cooking for you, cleaning for you, and bringing you water!
Expectations : a chance to truly live on my own terms and be responsible for my own actions
Reality : all that and more

And you can add Hurstville to the list of Asian dominated places.

I guess you are right. Go to work, cook yourself, do the cleaning and go to sleep, wake up and go to work again. Vicious cycle. Did not expect this life, but this has become my reality now.

Expectation ( at the age of 7 1/2, when I first moved to a small town in Tasmania from South africa): It'll be just like South Africa, everyone will look the same as the people in SA, school will be easier as I don't have to bother about Zulu or Afrikans as Australia is English speaking.
Reality: WOW! My family are the only dark skinned people in the town and Australian english sounded like a foreign language
Expectation:( when 16)- Woot 16, going to get my learner's driving lisence, Ammu and Abbu are going to take me driving everyday, deffinately going to get my P plates at 18. 120 hours of driving is nothing! Can do that in 10 days :P
Reality: Bengali parents barely take you driving, I'm supposed to complete 120 hours of driving...have 20 hours or so to go...I'm 19 AND I'M STILL ON MY L's *depressing*
Expectation: Age 18: Yay, finally, officially an adult. I can do what I want, I just need to say to Ammu "going to the city with friends, be back at 6" and she'll be cool with it. FREEEDOOOM AT LAASSST!
Reality: What freedom?
Expectation: *before Uni started*- University is going to be the best, I can eat at the cafes all day, chill with freinds, skip every lecture... study a little bit as Uni ( told by many) is less work than yr 12.....life's gonna be good.
Reality Cafe food is not yummy all the time, food is preety expensive too and very unhealthy, I hang out at cafe with friends...BUT TO STUDY! SO MUCH READING *if only I could get my hands on the person who said Uni would be easier* and has to attend every lecture....
Expectation: Going to study Arts at Uni, brake the family tradition of engineers, doctors and random scientists ( parents were cool). Arts has a reputation like all other subjects...it's going to be good ( and yes I do love it)..however.....
Reality *in terms of reputation* " I don't always talk to arts kids, but when I do, I ask for large fries"...." have fun getting a proper job"....."you don't need to study, you're an arts student"
