Grew up in Azimpur (China Goli), some renowned people I met in my childhood include Kaderi Kibria, Sheikh Ishtiak (RIP), Kislu (Table Tennis champ), GM Nawsher Prince. Very close to the house of Major Monzoor. Late Alamgir Kabir(Film Producer)and Gov Lab Head Hafizuddin (attended his coaching during SSC) used to rent there.

Moved to Malibag while in Dhaka College and currently my family still in Santibag

Common adda chronologically: Azimpur Shah Saheb Bari area, Udayan/ULab/Fuller Road/Nilkhet, TSC, Elephant Road/Suhrawardy Hall in BUET.

I would still go to Suhrawardy Hall whenever go BD just for fun .

I grew up in that area Beamer bhai! from 1970-89! My 'mejho mama' and his family once lived very close to the 'Kali Mandir'!! We livd across from the Shiddheshwari School Maath (ground by the Shiddheshwari Mashjid) where actually Ashraful got discovered...of course a lot after my time there! Very emotional and good energy place Beamer bhai! Back then in the 70s that area had decent amount of trees and 'pookur' or dighi' in that area! Night time, it felt like night time, although you are still in the middle of that vibrant city!!!
I used to be known as 'Bhotoo Bhombol' in the 70's in that area, you parents might have heard of me! I was the very fat kid in the neighbourhood! In my early childhood I had a problem....I used to throw rocks at crows and people! People didn not like that very much.
I also believe there are jinnies (jiniah) on some of those big old trees in that neighbourhood! Lot of people talk about something real bad happanning in a strange house in there!

hmm..well we don't exactly have a place in Dhaka.. well we do in Savar and Boshundhara but there is no building there yet :P and Boshundhara is still a river ! So we stay at my cousins place in Dhanmondi and Sideshwari. Hopefully we'll start building in Savar soon, it's such a beautiful place, so peaceful away from all the traffic and noise.. graam graam poribesh I just love it.

G1 but grew up inside the DU campus the time I lived in Bangladesh. From 1973 until 1979. Our houses in G1 and Banani back then were rented out to US embassy folks. Back then you could hear jackals in these VERY far away areas.

After moving back to Bangladesh for good a few years ago, lived in G1 whenever in Dhaka. It SUCKS! Prefer Old Dhaka, the DU campus or Dhanmandi to hang out.

Dhanmondi is the coolest place to hang out in Dhaka. Gulshan (both 1 and 2) are too congested nowadays. The beauty of Gulshan has been destroyed. The Gulshan police station parks all the vehicles involved in accidents right in front of our house and it is really an ugly sight. People are blaming the increased commercialism of the area for its downfall but I personally believe that the big commercial projects isn't what is hurting Gulshan. Actually it has helped the main roads to be more attractive and there are some pretty cool buildings in the main road now. Garments factories is the major reason for this heinous transformation and also for the increase in crime in the area. They must be moved out ASAP. Wonderland, which is more a brothel these days must be shut and moved out. The land should be used to create a heavily patrolled public park. There should be restrictions on commercial projects and the City Corporation should look to build more beautification projects such as fountains and gardens. Then I believe some of the Old Gulshan can be restored and it will be a more tolerant place to live. This is an old article in the Star magazine about the transformation of the residential areas of Dhaka: http://www.thedailystar.net/magazine...7/03/cover.htm

Many people are hailing Parbachol to be the next Gulshan as in becoming one of the top residential areas in Bangladesh. How many of you believe this?

SO is your house the one where they've set up the auto parts store, beside Cafe Mango? That place is already severely congested as it is, why the heck would anyone put a car decoration store there?

As for your argument that commercialisation isnt the cause, I beg to differ.... and I'm sure many people here will agree with me. Just the example of the auto decor store in what used to be a goli to kachukhet bazar is proof enough. Gulshan has become the Motijheel of Dhaka.

From all sides people commute to and from gulshan in their chauffeur driven cars, clogging up the roads. Those who cant afford the cars travel on the Navana human haulers and the buses.

FYI I live in banani quite close to the picture Mav posted. And the multitudes of Apartment buildings already house a substantial upper middle class that the roads here werent built for. And that there is another sign of greedy commercialisation when owners of 1 bigha plots tear down their 1980s 2 story houses for some extra moola and their "chhele-meyer jonno ekta flat".

If more people worked their legs and walked or biked, the congestion wouldnt be as bad as it is nowadays. And if anyone says the roads are unfit for walking, then I'd tell you that you're unfit to live in Bangaladesh.

Re: Antora -

Bashundhara is no longer river. The Balu river has been encroached and filled up on many sides giving you the newest in urban property development. NSU having shifted their campus to Bashundhara has clogged the entrance road manifold. And this when the private schools inside are on summer vacation. Just wait till IUB finishes their campus and GrameenPhone HQ moves there end of this year!!!

I agree. I grew up in Gulshan in my early age and we still have a home there. Now when I go back to Bangladesh its hard to distinguish between Gulshan and Gulistan. Looks and feels all same to me. My old Gulshan is there no more. Same is true for Banani and Uttara. Too crowed and conjested for my liking.

When I visit BD, I rather enjoy my time outside Dhaka. Dhaka has over grown last 15 years (or so) in a very un planned way. People try to grab every inch they can get from the street. The streets of Gulshan is so stretched out, bad shape and conjested its more health hazzard than streets of Gulistan for example. Same is true for Banani and Uttara.

If I ever go back, one thing for sure, I am not going back to Gulshan. It's like living in NY city.

B_K bhai

I heard all those bhut-jinn stories. The Pak Army killed and burnt a few Hindu families home near Kali Mandir. Siddeswari masjid er imam was a noted rajakar in the area and he led the burning of shantinagar bazar. I have no clue if he is still there or not. I remember in early eighties going for jumma prayer and he used to scold us kids for playing on the field.

The best memory of that field : One friday afternoon Wasim Akram came with Golla ( early to mid nineties I think ) for jumma and bowled a few overs after the prayers. Kids wents ecstatic.

I grew up and still live in Siddeswari Beamer and Javed bhai, barring the 6 years in Sydney!!

Where did u grow up Beamer??

I live very very close to Kali mondir, next to Anarkoli Market. The second house from Siddeswari Boys School. When we moved here in 1991, Siddeswari was a great place to live in, not so much anymore.

The Eastern Housing behind my house was still under construction, so was the Anarkoli Market. We used to play badminton, football in the market yard and i learned to ride my bicycle in the space in between Mouchak and Anarkoli market. Those days were very full of tranquility and serenity.

We used to have fights with the "Eastern Housing" boys for any excuse actually, cuz they were new to the "para". They were barred from "tanki mara" to girls outside Eastern Housing and used to cope sh!t from us. Then they ganged up and barred us from entering thier housing block.......... After a while, it was all good!!! Lolz, good old days.....

Now its a total chaos and i cant wait to move out of this place.

Rabz

We were there from around '81 to about '92 I think. Ten years more or less.

We lived on the main street that stretched from Vicarunnessa school to Mouchak. But, the house was very close to the goli leading to Kali Mandir.

I know exactly where your house is. I used to visit my friends house right next to the mashjid field. It was a great time and great area to live back then. We went to many many puja ceremonies. More than I can count.

I preferred to hang out more in Bailey Road, and actually more time playing in the Ispahany colony. There used to be some sort of Russian Business post ( wink wink ) building there. We used to give them hell. We taught ourselves few Russian sentences and used to yell CIA, CIA ..lol

I had a friend named ripon who also lived in the narrow goli by the mosque. We used to go to Probhatai Biddaniketon field to play cricket. I actually lived in 3 different houses, a bit firthur down.

79'-80s --14/2 Dilu road....you go all the way, and then you go right just after the Chachar dokan, lol, i mean the bura chaha who used to sale laddos for 1 taka.

80's - Next we lived the house next to the Shomi Kaisers house for about 6 years, this one you probabl know. You need to make a left before you reach the divided part of dilu road at the end.

Then i think it was 1989 when we moved to 356/1, Hasan Saheber bari. You make right from the divided part. And then there are 2 nice 5 storied building at the end of that road, we lived on the 3rd floor on the left side building, yellow color.

Amar naam Fahad. Amake chinben na, i was picchi those days. We moved to mirpur in late 90's and came back to moghbazar in 2001 again. Now we r in Gulshan 2.
I have so much memories in this goli, i learned riding bicycle here, made accidents, achar laddo coke khawa , mosjid er paser dokan theke vdo rent kora, then dilu road er baire ekta clinic chilo, naam bhule gechi, clinic er pase arekta vdo store chilo, okhane jetam prai. probhati te cricket kheltam - its just lots of memories there.

And the coffee house, out of dilu road, on the left. duplex coffe house, i m sure you know that. Man koto je sikh kabab khaisi okhane, unbelivable. Upore dentist er clinic chilo, niche ekta casset er dokan chilo.lol
