V for Vendetta is an absolute gem of a movie.
Loved it.

SS, do read the comic (same title) it was based on by Alan Moore. It's even better.
Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, and a few other writers have been writing comics that are very different from the superhero and Archie comics of our childhoods.

yes and i liked it. michael kaine and the macho aussies all did great jobs. i liked the illusionist better, and have seen it more than twice already. i won't watch the prestige again until i stumble onto it on HBO possibly in a year or so.

The Prestige started off very promising. Even though Johansson's weak acting ruined a significant number of scenes, the story was intriguing enough to overshadow that deficit. But it's the last 10 minutes that ruined it for me. The ending was equally disappointing. Also, what eludes me is how they misappropriated Scarlett's talents. She could have had a far more glamourous role. Instead, you had to see her in unattractive clothes and listen to her nauseatingly coughy voice.

WOW ... my feelings exactly ! i too thought: kothay jeno mil ach'he suspect-er shathe, not just the intrcately constructed plot that leaves you pleasantly surprised in the end. how cool is that ?
i agree with everything you wrote about the prestige, especially about the ending and the "johansson factor". i hope SJ like our SN gets her form back soon. SN had his ton against the aussies, and SJ had that brilliant performance in lost in translation.

I watch a lot of films, usually around two per week at the local arthouse complex. By nature I avoid the mainstream cinema and gravitate towards what is referred to as Independent cinema. The following films were interesting, charming or worth a recommendation out of what I have watched in the last three years. This is in no particular order -
Lost in translation - a beautiful and subtle tale of intimacy between strangers set in a beautifully clean and cold Tokyo
The Afterlife - a Japanese film about what happens in afterlife, that the dead waits in a special place until they can decide upon a particular happy memory to achieve nirvana
The beat that my heart skipped - a French film of how a disillusioned young man, trying to get away from his gangland past finds solace in the piano
Donnie Darko - a fantastic kafkaesque tale of subversion set in a very average middleclass american family in the late 1980's. one of the most thought provoking films of this century
In terms of DVD releases, I recently acquired The Three Colours trilogy, Spellbound, Meet Joe Black and a pirated copy of Jalsaghar by Satyajit Ray.

Any movie with John Travolta.
John Travolta is not a big applaused actors like Robin Williams, Mike Myers, Denzel Washington, Russel Crowe, Jack Nicholson, Robert Duvall etc. Most of his movies he is part hero part villain. Nothing to appraise about his acting either other than he knows how to dance and how to make a conversation.
Pulp fiction - I watched this movie several times. The scenes I most enjoy, in the restaurant when Travolta and Tarantino's real life wife Uma Thurman argues over a 5$ shake. The other one also in the restaurant when he argues with Samuel L Jackson during the Bonnie situation. Tarantino himself is a gross producer. But JT is someone whose witty communication technique makes me attracted more over advisory attitude of Al Pacino.
Among some of the latest Travolta movies such as Be Cool and Get Shorty really made me feel revived. The simple screenplay with natural acting with not overboard comedy are the properties that will never make those films to reach the level where it can compete for departmental acclamation but for 2 hour of fun and popcorn within the limits of real life scenario those are worth watching.

Just watched Ocean's 13 today. There was no twist in the story, but it was pretty funny at times, and overall I thought it was better than the second one. The first one, though, is still the best, hands down.

Folks, if you guys enjoy historical movies, watch "The Downfall" or "Der Untergang" ... its a German movie based on Hitler's last days. Its significance is due to two things:
1) it focuses on the man Hitler as opposed to the Maniac/Dictator Hitler
2) It's the first time a German born person has played Hitler himself.

Drooling as in; She's a stunner, and I wish I had a wife like that... not drooling as in the other thing.
Btw, those pics were really really erotic yes?

I recently watched Bowling For Columbine after Ammark's recommendation. If you haven't watched it, it's a documentary-movie by Michael Moore about gun violence in America. I must say, it's really an eye-opener. A bit dated, but given the recent shootings in Virginia Tech, it's a must watch.

Curse of the Golden Flower, another Tang Dynasty classic, this time from master film maker Zhang Yimou of Jou Do and Raise the Red Lantern fame. Fabulous eye-candy epic featuring great performances from the incomparable Gong Li and Chow Yun Fat. The best I've seen since House of the Flying Daggers, also a must see for those into Shakespearian plots and intrigues.
