Default News Around the Globe

Just thought of opening this thread, where we can put all the news (important/not so important) from all around the world. Not all news deserves a thread of its own and I also couldnt find any thread to put this news in....

Musharraf apparently escapes death (once again), while someone tried to gun down the plane carrying him (source: bdnews24.com)

this guy probably has more than nine lives......

From BBC:

Quote:

'Plane targeted'
Separately, Pakistan's media reported that Gen Musharraf's plane came under fire as it took off from a military base close to the capital.

Officials denied the reports, but police said they had found two anti-aircraft guns on a rooftop near the air base, in Rawalpindi. It was not clear if the guns had been fired.
Gen Musharraf, who has survived previous assassination attempts, was said to be unharmed.

It is believed several hundred religious students are still inside the complex, after more than 1,000 left under mounting pressure from security forces.

Officials said about 60 of those remaining are hard-liners, who have been at the vanguard of campaigning for the imposition of strict Islamic law (Sharia) in Islamabad.

The BBC's Barbara Plett in Islamabad says the government is piling psychological pressure on those still inside with a mass demonstration of force demanding unconditional surrender.
The view here is that the clerics want an honourable exit, but the president is determined to inflict absolute defeat on the Red Mosque, our correspondent says.

This guy has lived with so much courage...I wouldn't have tried doing the same unless I had security like Ustaad Bush. But anyway, it's probably time for him to step aside...which I doubt is going to happen anytime soon...then again, I have no clue about their current political situation.

Musharraf has made good economic moves, but unrest is gradually building over his holding of the Army Chief post.

Woman runner-up in one-horse race

Jenny Brown was the only entrant to the cake competition

A grandmother won second prize in a cake-baking contest at a fete, only to discover she was the only entrant.
Jenny Brown, 62, entered her Victoria Sponge into the competition and was initially pleased to have come second.
But she was left shocked when a friend revealed to her that she was the only person to take part.
The contest was organised by the Wimblington Sports Committee and judges marked down the cake because it had indentations from a wire rack.
'Judges' expectations'
Ms Brown said: "My friend came over to me at the fete and said I had come second.
"I asked her how many more entries there had been, but she just started laughing and said I was the only one.
"I definitely wasn't annoyed about it."
Although the cake was not deemed fit to win the competition, Ms Brown said it was soon polished off with no complaints.
Julie Dent, from the Wimblington Sports Committee, said: "The judges had an expectation and I suppose they didn't feel as though it qualified for first place.
"This was the first year but the cake competition will become an annual event."
She said her own baking was subject to another strange decision.
"About 11 years ago I entered a show with some fruit scones. I was the only entrant but I came third."

Default Pakistan Rebel Mosque Leader Killed

The leader of the rebel mosque being stormed by Commandos in Islamabad has been killed, according to the Pakistan government.
Abdul Rashid Ghazi is said to have died in heavy fighting at the Lal Masjid compound.
The fighting has already left some 50 militants and eight soldiers dead.
Commandos stormed the facility before dawn when last-ditch efforts to negotiate a surrender failed.

New Indian President

India has elected its first female president, in a move that's being described as an historic step forward for women in the world's most populous democracy.

72 year old Pratibha Patil was elected by MPs in a landslide victory over the country's 84 year old vice-president.

The former lawyer won almost two thirds of the votes and had the support of the governing Congress party, led by India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

The role is largely ceremonial but continues an Indian tradition of using the presidency to give disadvantaged communities a high-profile voice.

Good choice...particularly because of her gender. Not sure about her qualifications though.

If there's something good that our aunties did in BD, they've empowered women during their rule. That's probably one thing I would always be grateful to the aunties for.

news from uk: it has been raining like cats and dogs for days now. my cat has been coming in each evening needing to be dried and now we are out of fresh towels. severe rain over the weekend had submerged roads and railtracks. there is chaos in the roads due to abandoned vehicles.
on the personal front, all this rain has made decide to visit an old friend tomorrow. at least there should not be any flooding high up the hills of britton ferry.

that's how it felt on friday morning. it must have rained nonstop from the early hours of the morning to the late afternoon. when it stopped raining, rather stupidly, i took my freshly oiled and cleaned bike along the cycle tracks of river taff, and after 32 miles came back covered head to toe in mud

Default Bananas NO good as laxative

Quote:

Indian suspect in banana ordeal - BBC

An Indian suspect was forced by police to eat 50 bananas as a laxative, to retrieve a necklace he was accused of stealing and swallowing.

When the bananas failed to produce the desired effect, police fed Sheikh Mohsin rice, chicken and local bread. Finally the necklace, which appeared on an X-ray taken on the suspect, was excreted and retrieved.

Hehe. my friend was telling me about this yesterday. Reminds me of the natok "Tothapi" on BTV back in the days

On a side note. Khalamma bekub'er moto $1100'er goyna pore khelna kinte ber hoise ki korte? Uchit shikkha howa uchit. Kolkatar gorib'era bhikka kore khay, ar ei mohila emne ortho-shompod dekhaye beray!

my generalised comment of the day: The Bollywood glamour promotion on Star, Zee, B4U, emptyV, V channel and Sony TV really seems to be drawing away people into a shallow materialistic and exhibitionist mindset all over the subcontinent!
