Shakib Al Hasan voiced his frustration at Bangladesh's early exit from the World T20s saying that the team should have taken the match against Pakistan to last five overs from "where it could [have gone] either way. But it seemed we were never in the game." Shakib also added the team's failure to do "elementary" things was annoying.

Pakistan reached the target of 176 runs with eight balls to spare. A few overs earlier, in the 16th, they completed the progress to the Super-Eights when they crossed the 139-run mark that gave them a better net run-rate than Bangladesh.

He explained how, while fielding, the basics went missing; the lack of commitment too peeved Shakib. "I didn't like the way we lost. We should have been lively after scoring 175, saved around fifteen runs while fielding. I'm talking about elementary things like standing 10 yards inside the boundary on the larger side of the ground. This is just a matter of common sense," he told Bangla daily Prothom Alo in Kandy.

"These things annoy me because neither the captain nor I can tell this every ball. Then the fielder doesn't put in the dive as the ball nears the boundary line. The dive may not work but at least the action inspires another fielder. The others will run beside the ball, without diving, seeing this,".

"This is what I expected from the team when I was the captain and even now when I'm not the captain. I think I will expect these things all the time. If we had done everything properly and lost, I wouldn't have felt so bad. I would have thought, 'they are a better team on paper and on the field and as a result we lost'. The disappointment would have been two out of 10, now it is six."

Shakib's criticism of the level of commitment is significant and though he has landed in hot water in the past for giving a forthright point of view, this time it is quiet justified. Bangladesh have now failed to qualify to the second stage in all of their last four appearances in global events starting from the 2009 World Twenty20s. They had a long build-up to this campaign but it amounted to nothing after they were struck down by Brendon McCullum's second Twenty20 international century in their first group game before giving it away to Pakistan.

Their point of inspiration should have been the way Shakib bounced back after a poor day against New Zealand. His 54-ball knock put him on top of individual scores made by a Bangladeshi in T20Is, beating Nazimuddin's 81.

"I don't normally plan anything when I go out to bat in a T20 game. After the first game against New Zealand, I realised that if I bat naturally I can have a 110-120 strike rate. I didn't have to force things. So against Pakistan when I had gathered enough confidence, I started playing my shots," he said, adding that he only thought of going for the hundred in the final over of the Bangladesh innings. "From a personal point of view, I had a good day. But the disappointment was to see the game being given away."

Thank you Shakib, thank you thank you thank you. He hasn't said anything we don't already know or haven't seen with our own eyes, but it's refreshing to hear it coming out of a player's mouth. I think there is no doubt now that our players are very much to blame for our pusillanimous performances. Not enough coaches, not enough matches, not enough pitches - excuses excuses. You have to be passionate about what you do to begin with. Where's the fire? Forget about pride of playing for the country, how do you look at yourself in the mirror and justify what you've done at the end of the day? This is something that I haven't heard any other player in the team talk about and I wouldn't be surprised if they don't feel the same way. It's my favorite part of the interview, i.e. where Shakib says he was especially fired up for the second game because he had failed in the first and needed to prove something to himself. Compare that to the other sissies in the squad who are just out there to satisfy the selectors and do the bare minimum to secure a spot in the team. No concept of setting standards for oneself.

If guys from Afghanistan and Ireland can show so much passion and urgency in the field, why can't these guys who get paid more and have access to better facilities?

I don't care that he doesn't go to practice if he doesn't want to if he can come back and score like he did against Pakistan. If the staff thinks there's a disciplinary problem there then it's up to them to fix it. As a fan, all I want to see are results.

As for his comments on not being able to become as good as Mendis, well Mendis doesn't do jack with the bat. Shakib is an all-rounder and if he does become as good as Swann some day, I'd more than just take it. Mendis/Warne have the luxury of bowling in the nets 24/7, while Shakib has to bowl AND bat. Considering this, the fact that he's set his eyes on Swann is actually a very good thing and he's set the bar high enough for himself. We all know a team needs very good specialist bowlers to complement its all-rounders, it's a no-brainer. He can't do everything himself.

Thing is, our guys know that they're gonna loose even before they get out on that field. The spirit of playing the game and for your country isd missing big times!. Need a motivational coach like Ian Pont back.

Man, Wouldnt I love to live the life of our so called "cricketer" (As always everyone other than shakib) who get paid koti taka a year for doing jack and get treated like celebrities but even after all their failures they still walk around acting like kings.. Great players from a decade or two ago ( Richards, Ambrose, Miandad etc) didnt get paid anywhere near as much as utter failures like Shahadat, Riyad, Ashraful but all these players combined arent even good enough to touch the feet of those greats. I say hit them where it hurts, no performance equals no pay. Mediocre performers should be paid the lowest amount of money, only Shakib gets A level contract, Tamim C and all others F. In a country as poor as ours, paying koti koti taka to failed sportsmen makes little sense, if you want koti taka then give performance thats worthy of that

Well said Shakib, this is why I respect you!

We cant handle it when an outsider speaks critically of us, we just blindly defend our players.

We have a bunch of lazy, unprofessional cricketers that need a good kick up the backside

The mental part of the game is very important and we could do with more players who have the same determination, ambition and drive as Shakib

Shakib states that

Quote:
"I didn't like the way we lost. We should have been lively after scoring 175, saved around fifteen runs while fielding. I'm talking about elementary things like standing 10 yards inside the boundary on the larger side of the ground. This is just a matter of common sense,"
and

Quote:
"These things annoy me because neither the captain nor I can tell this every ball. Then the fielder doesn't put in the dive as the ball nears the boundary line. The dive may not work but at least the action inspires another fielder. The others will run beside the ball, without diving, seeing this,".
This pretty much reveals the glaring hole in BD cricket. Players lack the fundamentals of the game even when they get to the international scene. International cricket isnt the time to learn fundamentals of the game. Domestics is the place to learn all these fundamentals. International cricket is the place where u show who you are and challenge the best of the best.

All should be sent to BKSP for a year or two, including Ash for learning the basics...

I dislike ASH's batting but I do have to defend him on this one. This guy actualy gives his all while he is fielding. Slides, Jumps, DIVES, you name it he dose it. He is one of our best fielder despite his size.

Yes, thanks to Shakib for speaking it out. I was in the ground and have written it a few times in this forum even. This was the only painful thing to watch..

I couldn't believe that the players were watching the ball and giving up a few meters away, players taking a good 2/3 seconds before taking off for a chase, players were utterly sluggish in everything in the field. Difference was so clear that many Srilankans watching was commenting on that too... After the second match actually I was so shocked that I tried to forget about the matches and took a hectic program to travel around Srilanka to forget it and to make my trip worth.

All the guys in the boundary lines were sluggish... You can rarely find dives by our players in the boundary lines... Against Pakistan I recon about 5/7 occasions where boundaries could have been prevented if they took off early and put in a dive... At least, may be more.

I'm really happy that Shakib spoke it out and this area needs serious attention... I don't know what's the fielding coach doing. He needs to gear up his efforts or quit his job. We don't need such useless coaches. I have not much complain on any other department, as much I have on fielding. This department has laid us down, I don't know how much of it has been captured by the camera, since I haven't watched, but that's my opinion with my infield experience.

My mother always told me that "with hard work and dedication you can achieve your goals".

Has Ashraful proven this theory wrong with the supposedly 'hard work' he does in training and the efforts he takes to rectify mistakes. And the way he still ends up being that golla type player.

tbh, mendis is only a good t20 bowler, he's no longer effective in the other formats, still might be of service in ODIs but if you look at how he started and how much his averages have ballooned you can see that people have found him out in one-dayers and tests.

no as far as shakib talking about the players not giving 100%, it's reassuring that a player has finally said it, maybe now it will be addressed, maybe this is what is needed to finally rectify this situation and maybe now player will start to give there all more often and results will follow.

now as far as shakib looking at swann, i already think shakib is just as effective with the ball as swann, and is a way better batsman.

brave by shakib, but then they can hardly leave him out of the team can they?
