Default Mushfique and Sujon - the all-rounders

We know that Rafique is not an all-rounder, at least not the all-rounder that we hope him to be, he is just a good enough batsman against spin bowling on good batting tracks, in short, he is a hitter.

We also have quite a few hitters like him - Mashrafee is one example. We have also seen Sharif who bats with a straight bat, and has the potential to be an all-rounder, but so far, he too, is a specialist bowler.

But what I want to put the attention on, is Sujon and Mushfique. You see, I believe that Mushfique is actually a batting all-rounder and just tries to bowl a good line and length.

On the other hand, Sujon is my best-bowling all-rounder - by Bangladeshi standards. I don't know if you have observed (from the Cricinfo live scorecard) how many times Sujon gave catches at very early in a batsman's innings, but the fielders just could not hang on to the catches.

There was once a time when Hasibul Hussain used to face this kind of situation - fielders used to drop catches off his bowling, quite frequently.

We have now seen Mushfique's batting, and bowling - by the way, Mushfique could not swing the ball as much as Sujon did, but the only difference between Sujon's not getting a wicket and Mushfique's getting 2 wickets is that Sujon was not consistent enough in his bowling to put the balls at the right places at the right length which Mushfique could do.

Since Sujon's captancy, he is under pressure to perform, since he was never a part of the Bangladesh test team. And the pressure of captancy had made him to concentrate less on his batting and also in his bowling. Also, he is getting old, and its time to give his spot to the young all-rounder Mushfique, as soon as we can find a suitable replacement for Sujon, the captain.

Anyway, what I would like to know is, how many of you agree with me of the following:-

Sujon should be in the ODI.

probably not in the test.

How about one more option:

Neither Sujon nor Mushfiq are batting or blowing allrounders and should be banished from the test team to the ODI team?

Default article form the guardian

you all have read the guardian report from day two. here is a relevant section that also applies to bangladesh's so-called allrounders (mushfiq/sujon), particularly the part at the end about picking the best batsmen and the best bowlers and not worrying about having an allrounder:

"But if you delve a little deeper, yesterday was not such a rosy day. Both Sri Lanka and West Indies, who lie ahead this winter, could have made mincemeat of the England attack. Ashley Giles did not visibly turn a ball; the debutant offie Gareth Batty did, but hardly looked the penetrating spin bowler England need so desperately; the other newcomer, Rikki Clarke, handed further ammunition to those who think the idea of him as a Test-match third or even fourth seamer is absurd.

These three have something in common. They all fit the ideal of the coach, Duncan Fletcher, who likes "multi-skilled" players. A multi-skilled player, if one translates the job ad jargon correctly, is someone not good enough to be classed as an all-rounder and, where England are concerned, someone often not good enough to be classed as a Test cricketer.

England have a problem, because they have lost their best multi-tasker in a generation, Alec Stewart, and they have little chance of finding a wicketkeeper any time soon capable of batting in the top six. Andrew Flintoff's absence does not help either.

Of course, it's better to have bowlers who can bat than bowlers who can't. But this reliance on multi-skillers misses the point. The current great Australian team and the West Indies sides of the 1980s and early 1990s never had all-rounders as such.

They played their six best batsmen, a wicketkeeper and their four best bowlers. The players were classy, athletic and adaptable enough to help out in other ways when needed. But that was not why they were there. This could end in tears. Not in Bangladesh, but soon enough."

Rafiq, please don't use that column to make your point. Your argument is strong enough on its own merit.

This series is it for sujan. So far he has done his part by not performing. Now, the coach needs to do his part; find a new captain. If sujan performs extra ordinarily, I will keep him for another series. But, I don't think that will happen. So, come Zim series, I would expect to see a new Captain.

Default After Day Four

Come-on guys, Sujon being a very old player, his skills as captain are shining day by day, but as a player, he just doesn't have the body to cope with the kind of work that a fast bowler has to do these days - especially in test cricket.

So far, on day 4, he has shown enough responsibility with the bat, lets wait and see what he can do - with the bat tomorrow on day 5 and on the next test series. If he can manage to bat pretty well in this test series, then I will give him the 'benefit of the doubt' and play him in the Zimbabwe series.

One thing I am certain now - Sujon may not be the perfect - captain - player, but it is through his captancy that Bangladesh will get that maiden test victory.

After that - only time can tell - what happens afterwards.
