Default Cricinfo: Shoaib to face Bangladesh on Worcestershire debut

Cricinfo staff

June 8, 2005

Shoaib Akhtar will make his debut for Worcestershire against Bangladesh at New Road this Sunday. The sides are playing a one-day match as a warm-up for Bangladesh ahead of their triangular tournament with England and Australia which starts on Thursday, June 16 when England play Bangladesh at The Oval.

Shoaib was granted special permission to play in the match by both the ECB and Bangladesh, as his contract officially starts on July 1st. But he is already getting used to life at Worcestershire. "Shoaib has settled in well since arriving last week," said Worcestershire's chief executive, Mark Newton, "and this game is an ideal opportunity for him to show everybody how well he is bowling."

Shoaib's taking a BIG risk....Bashar, Ashraful n Aftab will smash him all around the ground... then Worcestershire will cancel his deal and send him back home

Does anyone know who else is playing? Solanki? Kabir Ali? Hick? or are they just going to throw another second string?

Smashing him all around the park is secondary. The first consideration is - can they survive for 50 overs.

Well if they play with some common sense then why not. After all they played full 50 overs against your mighty Indian team.

This is both good and bad for Bangladesh.

The good thing: It will be a good preparation for facing Brett Lee and playing good against Shoaib can boost the confidence of our batsmen (According to Mehrab Hossain Opi, just hitting a four against Shoaib gave him enough confidence to score a 70+ and a 100 in his next ODI series)

The bad thing: After being dropped from WI tour, Shoaib won't be in picnic mode. He'll try his best to show everybody what he's capable of. So there's very good chance of a humiliation and morale damage in that practice match.

I think Bangladesh need to be more worried about Vaas (if he plays) than Shoib.

Only relief they can find for now is Solanki, Kabir Ali, and Batty are gone to the oneday squade for the NatWest series.

I want shoeb to blow out BD in his 10 over spell. That will bring BD players on earth and they will play within their limits. I see all good, and nothing but good

I think Hoggard/Harmie/Flintoff/Jones already brought them back to earth. They might go under ground if they get totally blown away by Shoaib. Then it may not be all good for us.

But anyway, I also want to see Shoaib giving his 100% against Bangladesh

from what i hav seen so far... "pushed underground by the opponent" (as spitfire said) is what brings out the best from BD.

Kono team jokhon BD ke nirdoy vabe tuladhuna kore matite mishai dai...tar por BD aste aste valo khelte suru kore!.. Ar akta series valo khellei BD player ra ato beshi akashe uthe jai je tar por koyek series 'underground' thakte hoy!

So let Shoaib smash and destroy and demolish BD completely!... that will only bring out the better performance from our batsmen in the coming matches and may put some sense in their heads. I don't think our batsmen will be able to hit out shoaib in english pitches very easily.

Oh no! This will be another disasterous performace by BD. They can't even face medium pacers of county team. How on earth will they face the fastest bowler in the world and that even in English condition. Good luck BD; you will need it.

Don't worry Shoeb will be pretty busy with his night-club activities for the first few weeks in England.

He has already bought a flashy sports car, it was on Sky Sports the other day. Show off.

Anyway, it will be a 2nd string. Which you should be grateful for, if Hick played you would be merrily smashed all over the show.

For those who don't know Hick, he has 127 1st class hundreds @ 54 with a top score of 405*. In one day cricket he has 39 hundreds @ 41.

He merrily rips county attacks to shreds. Last year he made a run a ball 250 against New Zealand will 11 sixes.

Yes, we all know of Hick. Never fulfilled his potential at test level. Atherton declaring against Australia when Hick was 98 not out probably finished him for good.

Funny no one bothered to take a crack at this headline: "Shoaib to face Bangladesh...".

Shouldn't it be: "Bangladesh to face Shoaib...."?

I do hope he gets slogged though. We need something to break out of this rut.

He's been showing off his new flat tire around his belly lately. I don't think he's fit.
