Shaheed Jewel, Mustaque teams named

The BCB selectors on Monday announced the teams of Shaheed Jewel XI and Shaheed Mustaque XI for an exhibition match marking the Victory Day on December 16. National skipper Habibul Bashar will lead Jewel XI while his deputy Khaled Mashud has been made the captain of the opponent side.

Shaheed Jewel XI: Habibul Bashar (captain), Javed Omar, Golam Rahman, Tushar Imran, Rajin Saleh, Farhad Reza, Sagir Hossain Pavel, Abdur Razzak, Enamul Haque Jr, Nadif Chowdhury, Shahadat Hossain Rajib, Syed Russel, Shafaq Al Jabir and Tareq Aziz; Md Salahuddin (coach) and Saiful Islam (coordinator).

Shaheed Mustaque XI: Khaled Mashud (captain), Shahriar Nafees, Nafees Iqbal, Mohammad Ashraful, Alok Kapali, Manjarul Islam, Mahmudullah Riyad, Nazim Uddin, Mohammad Rafique, Khaled Mahmud, Nazmul Hossain, Talha Jubair, Mahabubul Alam Robin and Mosharraf Hossain; Sarwar Imran (coach) and Shahidul Islam (coordinator).

Just a exhibition match, should not pay too much attention to who got selected or who was left out. But I am just curious about one person- Mahbubul Alam Robin. Let me tell you what I know about him- his stats are pretty ordinary so far, he is one of the sixteen winners of the last GP Pacer Hunt, played for Indira Road in the last premier league (along w/ Wascoroni), Sonargaon bought him this year, occasionally plays for Dhaka division. My question is- is he just another Bikash Ranjan Das or Murshed Ali Khan Sumon? Or, is there something little extra in him that caught the selectors' eyes?

I have witnessed couple of these matches in Dhanmondi stadium long time ago. It’s like a picnic in the field and players are very friendly to each other. Everyone seems to enjoy the outing.

Still hope to see some good knocks from our key players and thus give the huge crowds some cheering.

there's nothing wrong with having some good time with opponent players.. as long as Cricket is there at its best.

actually, i'd be very happy to see teams like these playing in professional four-day tournaments. from the looks of it, we could easily create a third team from the reserves (i.e. the ones not selected in these two), and make the three take part in such a competition every year. this will do our cricketers a big favour as it will enable them to sharpen their skills against the best that we have in stock. it would be way better than playing a hopeless barisal or a not-all-that-great rajshahi. the younger ones would be encouraged to show off their best, and the elders would have to work hard to hold on to their positions.

Bashar led Shahid Jewel XI won the match with a 64 run margin. Highlight of the match was Nadif's hurricane 92 ball 110 runs not out knock that includes twelve fours and three sixes. Also, young speedster Mahbubul Alam Robin (Mustaq XI) showed good performance, exploiting the early morning moisture he took four wickets for 36 runs. Tushar continued his good form to score 54 runs out of 57 balls. Ashraful also finally found some run, he scored a 60 ball 46 run knock. Enamul Jr took 5/22 bowling for Shaid Jewel XI.

shabbash...shows that we do have players who can score big and quick against quality (well, that's the best we got, right?) opposition. it's just the mental blog that they have to get out of, i guess. the seniors have to play more sensibly in order to make some breathing space for the juniors in the team, which will enable the latter to play their natural game. the inability to do so on the part of the seniors is what holds our youngsters back from performing once they are on the big stage, imo.
