Bangladesh board probe corruption allegations
Bangladesh board probe corruption allegations
Cricinfo staff
July 28, 2006
Bangladesh cricket was facing a crisis after claims in the local media that a national selector had taken commissions from a deal two players have with sportswear company Reebok, while another was said to have taken payment for finding a player an English club.
Atahar Ali Khan was named in Dhaka newspapers as having taken money resulting from a contract between the company and Habibul Bashar, Bangladesh's captain, and Mohammad Ashraful.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board immediately announced it would be looking into the allegations. "If it is found that the selector took commissions or in any way influenced the deal with the national cricketers, we will take action," Mahmudur Rahman, the BCB's chief executive, told a press conference. He added that Khan had denied the allegations.
The three-year deal was signed in June and was given the approval of the BCB after it was established that it did not clash with pre-existing board commitments. But last week several papers carried claims that Khan, who ahs the distribution rights for Reebok in Bangladesh, took sizable commissions on the agreement.
Bashar, who leads Zimbabwe in the first of five ODIs against Zimbabwe tomorrow, was quizzed by reporters in Harare. "What I can say is that it's a very lucrative deal and it would mean a lot to Bangladeshi cricketers," he explained, adding that deal was effective from the opening ODI. There is no question that either player did anything wrong.
It has also been claimed that Faruque Ahmed, the head of the selection panel, was paid in return for helping Ashraful sign to play for Rainhill CC in England. "The allegation raised against us is serious, but totally baseless and we denied the allegation," he said in a written statement. "We protest the allegation that brought down our social position, honour and status in society."

And also we demand strict punishment for those people who made this story (if proven false). Funny, is not it the easiest job to write whatever you want, no matter true or false?
I hope this will not have an impact in performances in ZIM.

If Atahar has the distribution rights for Reebok in Bangladesh, is that for retail distribution of Reebok products or sponsorships? If it includes the latter, he would make money from Reebok on every sponsorship anyway. Is the allegation that he took commissions from the players for arranging/selecting them for the sponsorship? If so, the players may be wrong as well to provide kickbacks to Reebok representatives (aka Atahar) for getting the contracts.
On the surface, it is entirely believable that the stories are true even if they try to cover it up with bogus statements and investigations. Foreign contracts and sponsorships are new territory to BD cricket, and if they conduct themselves in the same manner they would make local deals, there could be trouble ahead for a lot of prominent people.

What a country we represent to the world. Obviously there is a corruption
and now in cricket. These money hungry hyenas know how to take money.
It's pretty visible that they would get into this malevolent act of spiteful use of money. And no wonder Rainhill's contract also one of the accusation, how our chief selectors' and high officials just sent Ash for "money", instead of sending him to proper place. And look the outcome.

If Atahar Ali Khan acted as an agent and took money, its quite normal norm in modern sports. What is the big fuss if his employment agreement doesn't contradict?

So the investigators must look into the contract and transactions between Atahar Ali and Reebok. That should answer all the questions on that matter.
For Ash going to rainhill, didn't rainhill ask for him? Or was he selected?
As a BD official even when you get paid well enough you can't act decent? I have nothing else to say.

Are you not asking "Saytan" to take the role of "Feresta" and arrange a proper investigation to unfold the truth?!

prothom-alo said it quite nicely... how can you trust the board to do the investigation properly when they are saying all along that the selectors are not guilty...

Yes you are. But when you are the judge, you don't start up saying they are innocent and start your investigation. They are innocent till proven guilty for general public, not for someone who will do the investigation if you know what I mean.

There is difference between, "you innocent until proven guilty" and "they(the board) are saying all along that the selectors are not guilty but they will investigate anyway"
Why wasting money and energy by investigating if they already know that the selectors are not guilty?

If Atahar was an agent for the players, it would be OK for him to take money from the player's fees as a commission. But in this case he is already representing Reebok, not the players. If he took commissions/kickbacks from the players in addition to money from Reebok, it would be double-dipping, a conflict of interest in his job of representing Reebok.
The players should be investigated as well, and if Bashar is guilty of bribing Reebok officials to gain a contract, he will lose his contract and may also lose his captaincy. I am sure Reebok is not thrilled at the negative publicity, and I would expect them to conduct their own inquiry into the matter.
Unless this happens in cricket all the time, in which case it's fine and no one will bother.

Agree with Rafiq bhai, Atahar is representitive of Reebok not players. But look at the pic of Shahadat. He looks like a pimp/drug dealer. What's wrong with them, this is not suppose to be like this. He is only in his 20's and the way he is showing the money, shows his intensions and goal of life. Ah well another talent going into corruption down the road.
Doesn't the school teach these young cricketers about any value or morality?

The problem is he is both representative of Bd cricket board and reebok. What Atahar did was not illegal but he only took advantage of this position.
or maybe its someone who doesn't like Atahar is trying to create a controversy by ruining the reputation he had in our cricket.
