'Marble-stuffed hilsa scam' deceives buyers in Bangladesh

A Bangladeshi student claims to have uncovered a scam in the city of Barisal to increase the weight of hilsa fish so that they become more expensive.

Police say the fishmonger accused of the fraud has gone into hiding.

Hilsa is a much sought-after Bengali delicacy: the Indian PM on a recent visit to Dhaka said that he was tempted to give up vegetarianism to eat it.

Bangladeshi traders export large quantities of Hilsa fish to neighbouring India and Western Europe.

Masraful Islam Shaikat alleges that the glass balls were deliberately put inside the fish to make them heavier.

"I bought six hilsa fish from a fishmonger in the Barisal market and asked another man to cut them.

"To our surprise, we found 20 marbles in one fish and another 15 in the second one," Mr Shaikat, who is a student of Barisal Medical College, told the BBC.

"Initially, we thought the fish might have swallowed the marbles accidentally, but the high number of marbles triggered our suspicions.

"I think the fishmonger was greedy and he deliberately stuffed them inside the fish to increase its weight."

Hilsa is normally sold for around $9 (£6) a kg and traders say if the weight of an individual fish crosses a kg, then the price doubles.

Mr Shaikat has lodged a complaint with the Barisal traders' association.

The association says it is taking action against the fishmonger.

"This is totally unacceptable and this incident has tarnished our image. We have filed a complaint with the police against the seller for indulging in an unlawful method to boost his profits," Nizam Hossain Tutul of the Barisal Fish Traders' Association told the BBC.

Mr Shaikat says he ate the hilsa with his family - minus the marbles - and they tasted "normal".

লন্ডন: ছেলেটার সঙ্গে অনলাইনে পরিচয়। মাঝে মাঝে ফেসবুকে চ্যাট হয়। হঠাৎ করে একদিন তার লন্ডনের মিডশিপ পয়েন্টের বাসার ঠিকানা দিয়ে তাকে একটি বিয়ের শুভেচ্ছা কার্ড পাঠাতে অনুরোধ করেন। এটি তার আইনজীবীর পরামর্শ। কার্ডে কী লিখতে হবে তাও লিখে দেন। সংক্ষেপ কাহিনী ব্যক্তিজীবনে তিনি একজন গে’। বিলাতের অভিবাসনের আশায় গে’ বিয়ে করতে যাচ্ছেন। গে’ হিসাবে কোর্টে নিজেকে উপস্থাপন-প্রমাণের জন্যে ওয়েডিং সেরিমনির তেমন কিছু শুভেচ্ছা কার্ড তার দরকার। কার্ড পাঠানোর প্রতিশ্রুতি দিলে ``থ্যাংকু ভাইয়া`` বলে কৃতজ্ঞতা প্রকাশ করেন।

মনে করা যাক, বাংলাদেশি ছেলেটির ছদ্মনাম শোভন। ঢাকার শাহজাহানপুরের কাছাকাছি একটি এলাকায় তাদের বাসা। ছ’বছর হয় বিলাতে আছেন । এখনও তার হাতে আছে ২ বছরের পোস্ট স্টাডি ওয়ার্ক পারমিট ভিসা। কিন্তু বিলাতে স্থায়ী অভিবাসনের জন্য গে’ ম্যারাজের সিদ্ধান্ত নিয়েছেন তিনি! কিন্তু যাকে বিয়ে করতে যাচ্ছেন তিনিও আসলে গে’ না। বলা যায় এক ধরনের অ্যারেঞ্জড অথবা কন্ট্রাক্ট ম্যারেজ!

এই ছেলেটির নাম লুকাস। ব্রাজিলিয়ান আর ইতালিয়ান মিক্সড। মারিয়া লুকাসের এক্স গার্লফ্রেন্ড। মারিয়ার মাধ্যমে শোভনের সঙ্গে লুকাসের পরিচয়। ক্রমশঃ তাদের তিনজনের বন্ধুত্ব গাঢ় হয়। লুকাস-মারিয়া জানেন শোভন একজন গে’। পরস্পরের সঙ্গে আলোচনা করে তারা শোভনের অভিবাসনের ব্যাপারে সাহায্যের সিদ্ধান্ত নেন। এর পিছনে একটি অর্থনৈতিক কৃতজ্ঞতাও কাজ করেছে!

গত বছর ব্রাজিলে লুকাসের মা অসুস্থ হয়ে পড়লে তিনি টাকার সমস্যায় পড়েন। বন্ধুর বিপদে এগিয়ে আসেন শোভন। নিজের জমানো সব টাকা তুলে দেন লুকাসের হাতে। শোভনের দেয়া টাকার চিকিৎসায় ব্রাজিলের হাসপাতালে সুস্থ হয়ে ওঠেন লুকাসের মা। পরে টাকাগুলো ফেরত দিতে চাইলেও শোভন তা নেননি। বাংলাদেশি বন্ধু শোভনের মহানুভবতায় লুকাস-মারিয়া দু’জনেই অভিভূত হন।

শোভনের জন্য তারা কিছু একটা করার তাদের সংকল্পটি আরও জোরদার হয়। বিলাতের মতো দেশে বিদেশি একজনের কাছে সোনার হরিনের নাম অভিবাসন। মায়ের চিকিৎসায় সহায়তার কৃতজ্ঞতার বিনিময়ে শোভনকে তেমন আকাঙ্ক্ষার সোনার হরিণ হাতে তুলে দেবার সিদ্ধান্ত নেন লুকাস।

সেই অভিবাসন স্বপ্নেই শুক্রবার (২৩-০৯-২০১১) শোভন-লুকাসের বিয়ের অনুষ্ঠানটি হয়েছে। বিয়েতে তাদের আইনজীবী, মারিয়াসহ ঘনিষ্ঠ কয়েকজন উপস্থিত ছিলেন। বাংলাদেশি বরের সাজে বিয়ের অনুষ্ঠানে যান শোভন। পাঞ্জাবি-পাজামা-চপ্পল। শুধু বরের পাগড়িটি ছাড়া। লুকাস পরেন তার অভ্যস্ত ইংলিশ পোশাক। বিয়ের দলিলে স্বাক্ষরের সময় পরস্পর পরস্পরের পাশে দাঁড়িয়ে ছবি তোলেন।

বিলাতে এ ধরনের বিয়ের নাম সিভিল পার্টনারশিপ। এখন তারা বিয়ের দলিলপত্র, ছবি, শুভেচ্ছা কার্ডসহ সমুদয় ডকুমেন্টস নিয়ে সিভিল পার্টনারশিপ’এর আইনি অনুমোদনের জন্য আদালতে যাবেন। আদালত অনুমোদন দিলেই ভিসা স্ট্যাটাস বদলে যাবে শোভনের। বারবার ভিসার মেয়াদ বাড়ানো, ফি গোনার টেনশন তাকে পোহাতে হবে না।

শুক্রবার বিয়ের ছবি পাঠিয়ে শোভন তার জন্য দোয়া করতে বলেছেন। সবশেষ গত বছর তিনি দেশে বেড়াতে গিয়েছিলেন। বললেন, বাবা-মা তখন তাকে বিয়ের জন্য চাপাচাপি করেন। তার বক্তব্য, কিন্তু আমিতো গে’। বাংলাদেশের সমাজ বাস্তবতার কারণে তা পরিবারকে খুলে বলাও সম্ভব না। এখন একজন গে’ হিসাবে বিলাতে অভিবাসন তথা স্থায়ী বসবাসের স্বপ্ন শোভনের! জীবনের প্রয়োজনে তার বয়সের একজনের কাছে যেন যে কোনভাবে বিলাতের মতো দেশে অভিবাসনটাই বড়! দেশও যেন আর স্বাভাবিক স্বপ্ন দেখাতে পারছে না শোভনদের!

বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় আইন ২৭(৪) ধারা বাতিলের দাবিতে জগন্নাথ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় শিক্ষার্থীরা হাইকোর্ট ও জাতীয় প্রেসক্লাবের মাঝখানে সড়ক দ্বীপ কদম ফোয়ারার সামনের রাস্তায় অবস্থান নিয়েছেন।

এ সময় ময়মনসিংহ-৬ আসনে সরকারদলীয় সংসদ সদস্য মোসলেম উদ্দিন আহমেদ ওই রাস্তা ধরে সচিবালয়ে যাচ্ছিলেন।

কিন্তু বিক্ষোভের কারণে তার গাড়িটি (ঢাকা মেট্রো ঘ ১৩-৪৮৫২) কদম ফোয়ারার কাছে আটকা পড়ে।

তখন পুলিশ তার গাড়িটি ছেড়ে দেওয়ার জন্য শিক্ষার্থীদের অনুরোধ জানালে শিক্ষার্থীরা উল্টো ওই সাংসদের গাড়ির সামনে অবস্থান নেয়।

শিক্ষার্থীরা মার্কার পেন দিয়ে ওই গাড়িতে বিভিন্ন স্লোগান লেখে বিক্ষোভ করছে।

গাড়িতে আন্দোলনরত শিক্ষার্থীরা লিখেছে- ‘শিক্ষাদুর্নীতি হতে দেব না’; ‘টাকা খাব, দেশের সব সম্পত্তি চুরি করব (মন্ত্রী)’; ‘মন্ত্রীর দালালরা সাবধান’; ‘চোর বাটপার দুই টাকায় কিনা গাড়ি (সংসদ সদস্য)’।

এ রিপোর্ট লেখা পর্যন্ত সংসদ সদস্য মোসলেম উদ্দিন আহমেদের গাড়িটি উদ্ধার কারা যায়নি।

তার গাড়িতে থাকা কিবরিয়া বাংলানিউজকে জানান, সাংসদ মোসলেম উদ্দিন আহমেদ জরুরি কাজে সচিবালয়ে যাচ্ছিলেন।

Dhaka district administration declared Syed Mohaimen Bakhs Kallol as the new publisher of Daily Amader Shomoy as its editor Naimul Islam lost a legal battle.

A team of district administration headed by deputy commissioner Muhibul Haque came up with the announcement after a court hearing Wednesday.

A district-administration source told banglanews, “Naimul Islam Khan is no more publisher of the Bengali daily.”

Sandblasting jeans comes under fire in Bangladesh

DHAKA — Suman Howlader was thrilled to land a job in a Bangladeshi factory sandblasting new jeans to make them look old, but he now believes the diktats of fashion have exacted a heavy toll on his health.
After working for three years, he started vomiting blood, coughing badly and struggling to breathe before being admitted to a specialist respiratory hospital in Dhaka.

Workers' groups say Howlader and many others like him have been misdiagnosed as suffering from tuberculosis because of ignorance about silicosis -- an incurable disease caused by inhalation of silica particles.
The minute, fast-moving particles are released during sandblasting, a process used to give new jeans the "worn" look that has been popular for many years around the world.

Sandblasting has long been
banned in Europe and the United States, but Bangladesh's cheap-labour garment factories still use it to condition jeans for top western brands.

Gucci, Levi's, H&M and Gap have all vowed to stop selling sandblasted products, while Dolce & Gabbana has been targeted in an Internet campaign to take a similar stance.
"One day, when I was working, blood started gushing out of my mouth and nose," Howlader told AFP from his hospital bed.

"They told me the work was safe. But the constant sandblasting made the room fill up with dust and sand. You end up swallowing and inhaling a lot of it."
Howlader fired high-pressure sand at denim jeans with just a cloth mask for protection, treating 200-300 pairs in a ten-hour day.

"Sandblasting is booming here," said Kalpana Akhter, general secretary of the Bangladesh Center for Workers Solidarity, which records many silicosis-like symptoms among workers in the sector.
"Doctors are not looking out for silicosis, so cases get diagnosed as tuberculosis instead," she said.

As most Bangladeshi companies have no health insurance, many of those who become sick simply quit their jobs and return to their villages in dreadful health, she added.
Tens of thousands of Bangladeshi workers are involved and at least 500 factories use sandblasting, said Khorshed Alam, who runs a labour rights group.
"Workers hardly have any protective gear to prevent (silica) dust from entering their system," he said.

According to Alam, many large factories are aware of the health risks of sandblasting and to avoid potential liability they often subcontract out the work to small, standalone factories.
"We used home-made compressors and sand-guns, which are 20 times cheaper than the ones used by big jeans plants," Delwar Hossain, supervisor at the small Meridian unit in Dhaka, told AFP.
Because of the high pay -- 7,500 taka ($100) a month or double the minimum wage -- they have no shortage of workers like Mohammad Ilias.

With only a thin cloth wrapped around his face, the 21-year-old from a village in the country's remote north was blasting sand with a homemade pressure-gun onto a pair of new jeans.
"In some factories, they use masks and other gear to keep sand off. But here we use cloth... there is no escape from sand. But we've got used to it," he said.
"I swallow so much sand doing this work but enough water and a banana a day sort out the health problems. I don't mind inhaling sand as long as the wages are good," he said.

The labour rights group Clean Clothes Campaign has run a successful campaign to shame famous brand names into using other, safer, techniques but in Bangladesh it remains profitable and therefore common.

Gap told AFP that it halted all sandblasting at its Bangladeshi suppliers in August following a review last year, though for many local factory owners there is an acceptance that the needs of fashion overrule health concerns.

"We are still a LDC ('least developed country'), please don't think that we are Switzerland," said Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin, head of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturer and Exporters Association, explaining that a national ban was unlikely.

Such attitudes mean a full-scale tragedy among Bangladeshi sandblasters may be going undetected, believes Ineke Zeldenrust, a spokeswoman for the Clean Clothes Campaign.
"We worry that we will see a similar scenario in Bangladesh as in Turkey," she said, where dozens of workers -- some teenagers -- developed acute silicosis and died, prompting public outcry before a ban was enacted in 2009.
But workers such as Asma, who is also being treated in the Dhaka chest hospital, say they have no choice but to continue sandblasting.
"The disease has eaten all my savings. If I don't work, I can't eat," a gaunt and skinny Asma, 25, told AFP before discharging herself from hospital and going back to work.

I think the LGBT movement is pretty strong in BD, and have you heard of 'The Boys of Bangladesh'. We're much more liberal compared to other Muslim countries to the west.

Of course they exist...obviously we aren't ready to have a Gay Mardi Gras Parade down Mirpur Road, like they do in Sydney every year, but there is very definitely a Gay community in Bangladesh, and I personally know 3-4 Gay guys in the US/Aus.

Not come across any Bangladeshi lesbians on the other hand.

Some of our Candian forummers might know of a particularly campish gay bangladeshi in Toronto. He is very definitely out, and close to impossible to not notice - definitely a Queen.

Bangladesh scraps leprosy stigma act

Bangladeshi activists have welcomed the abolition of a century-old act which confined leprosy patients to state-run institutions.

The 1898 Lepers Act was passed at a time the authorities believed leprosy was highly contagious. Officials now say the law contravenes human rights.

Correspondents say lepers currently face arrest and a fine if they venture out of their care centres.

Government estimates suggest Bangladesh has about 40,000 leprosy patients.

The BBC's Ethirajan Anbarasan in Dhaka says that leprosy patients have suffered considerable discrimination and humiliation in Bangladeshi society. They have been denied job opportunities and are not allowed to use the public transport system, our correspondent says.

Activists say the move will help integrate patients into society and that from now on leprosy patients can get access to health care in all hospitals.

"It is a first step, it is a first building block towards a leprosy-free Bangladesh. We can now begin the fight against the social stigma and the mindsets which actually says this is a contagious disease," Saber Hossain Chowdhury, an MP from the ruling Awami League, who tabled the bill in parliament, told the BBC's correspondent in Dhaka.

Activists believe the number of people who have leprosy is higher than official figures suggest, as many people do not report the condition because of the social stigma associated with it.

But now that the government has repealed the law, they hope sufferers will be encouraged to come forward for treatment.

Mr Chowdhury said that leprosy can be cured using a multi-drug therapy.

"Through the repeal of this act, this treatment will be available in all hospitals," he said.

But he added: "It is all very well stating that in a law, but we have make sure that this is the case in practice."

If only we had 10 men, just 10 men like Saber in the parliament(don't care for which party), Bangladesh would be a better place than it is today.

This won't garner any big headlines, and Begum Zia will never go on any road marches for leprosy, but little things like this help to educate and better ourselves as a people and society.

It is a shame this was in the books for so long - but like Saber says, having the law is one thing, it needs to be implemented properly too.

রাজধানী ঢাকা নগরীর দুই অংশের দুটি নতুন নাম আসছে। সোমবার মন্ত্রিসভায় নতুন নাম নিয়ে আলোচনা হয়েছে বলে নিশ্চিত করেছে একটি সূত্র।

এর আগে ঢাকা সিটি কর্পোরেশন দক্ষিণ ও ঢাকা সিটি কর্পোরেশন উত্তর এই দুটি নাম প্রস্তাব করা হলেও তা পরিবর্তন করা হচ্ছে জানালেও নাম দুটো ঠিক কী হতে যাচ্ছে তা জানায়নি সূত্রটি।

সোমবার বিকেলেই জাতীয় সংসদে ঢাকা সিটি কর্পোরেশন বিভক্তির লক্ষ্যে তোলা বিলের ওপর সংসদীয় কমিটির সুপারিশ আসছে। ওই সুপারিশেই নতুন দুটি নাম উপস্থাপন করা হবে বলে সূত্র জানায়।

সিটি কর্পোরেশন বিভত্তি নিয়ে বিরোধী দল সহ বিভিন্ন মহলের আপত্তির বিষয়টিও মন্ত্রিসভার আলোচনায় আসে। আলোচনা তোলেন স্থানীয় সরকার মন্ত্রী সৈয়দ আশরাফুল ইসলাম। পরে মন্ত্রীদের অনেকেই এ বিষয়ে কথা বলেন। তারা প্রায় সকলেই নতুন দুটি নামের পক্ষে মত দেন বলেও সূত্র জানায়।

আলোচনায় প্রধানমন্ত্রী বলেছেন সিটি কর্পোরেশন বিভিন্ন মহল ভুল প্রচারণা চালাচ্ছে। যেভাবে নেতিবাচকভাবে তুলে ধরা হচ্ছে বিষয়টি সেরকম নয় বলেও মন্ত্রিসভায় মন্তব্য করেন প্রধানমন্ত্রী।

তিনি বলেন, শুধু সিটি কর্পোরেশন নিয়ে নয় সরকারের সব কাজ নিয়েই ভুল প্রচারণা চলছে। আর এ কাজে সক্রিয় রয়েছে একটি কুচক্রী মহল।
