The whole Dhaka city division issue reminds me of the abolition of the London GLC in the mid 80s - until 2000, London remained the only large metropolis without a central authority.

Wikipedia details the reason why this happened - mostly political to deflate the powers of the opposition mayor.

চট্টগ্রাম, ডিসেম্বর ০৪ (বিডিনিউজ টোয়েন্টিফোর ডটকম)- চট্টগ্রাম নগরীর ডবলমুরিংয়ে সড়ক দুর্ঘটনায় বাংলাদেশ ক্রিকেট বোর্ডের (বিসিবি) পরিচালকের ছেলে মারা গেছেন। আহত হয়েছেন আরো দুই জন।

নিহত আরিফুর রহমানের (৩৫) বাবা শফিকুর রহমান মুন্না বাংলাদেশ ক্রিকেট বোর্ডের (বিসিবি) পরিচালক। ঢাকার গুলশানে তাদের বাসা।

আহতরা হলেন, আরিফের স্ত্রী জেরিন (২৪) ও গাড়ির চালক মমতাজ আলী।

চট্টগ্রাম মেডিকেল কলেজ (চমেক) হাসপাতালের পুলিশ ফাড়ির নায়ের মো. ইউসুফ বিডিনিউজ টোয়েন্টিফোর ডটকমকে জানান, রোববার প্রথম প্রহরে ডবলমুরিং থানার বারেক বিল্ডিং মোড় এলাকায় আরিফুরদের বহনকারী প্রাইভেট কার নিয়ন্ত্রণ হারিয়ে রাস্তার পাশে আইল্যান্ডের সঙ্গে ধাক্কা খায়।

আশঙ্কাজনক অবস্থায় তিন জনকে চমেক হাসপাতালে আনা হলে চিকিৎসক আরিফুরকে মৃত ঘোষণা করেন।

বিজয় দিবস উপলক্ষে রোববার বিকালে বিএনপির উদ্যোগে রমনা পার্কের বিপরীত দিকে ইঞ্জিনিয়ার্স ইনস্টিটিউশন মিলনায়তনে মুক্তিযোদ্ধাদের সংবর্ধনা দেওয়া হচ্ছে।

বিএনপি নেতারা জানান, অনুষ্ঠানে যোগ দিতে দেশের বিভিন্ন স্থান থেকে মুক্তিযোদ্ধা ও বিএনপিকর্মীরা সকালেই ঢাকায় পৌঁছে অনুষ্ঠানস্থলে গিয়েছিলেন। কিন্তু সকাল ৮টার দিকে পুলিশ বেধড়ক লাঠিপেটা করে তাদের বের করে দেয়।

কয়েকজনকে আটকও করা হয়েছে বলে বিএনপি নেতারা জানিয়েছেন।

এর এক ঘণ্টার মধ্যেই মতিঝিলে শিল্প ব্যাংক (বিডিবিএল) ভবনের পাশে একটি এবং শান্তিনগরের কনকর্ড টাওয়ারের সামনে আরো দুটি গাড়িতে আগুন ধরানো হয়। শান্তিনগরে গাড়ি দুটির মধ্যে একটি পুলিশের।

সকাল সোয়া ১০টার দিকে ফার্মগেটের পর এটিএন নিউজের কার্যালয়ের সামনে একটি বাসে আগুন দেওয়া হয়। এরপর কারওয়ান বাজার সার্ক ফোয়ারা থেকে ফার্মগেটমুখী গাড়ি চলাচল বন্ধ হয়ে যায়।

এ আগুন কারা ধরিয়েছে, তা তাৎক্ষণিকভাবে জানা যায়নি।

ইঞ্জিনিয়ার্স ইনস্টিটিউশনে বিএনপিকর্মীদের লাঠিপেটার বিষয়ে শাহবাগ থানার ওসি রেজাউল করিম বিডিনিউজ টোয়েন্টিফোর ডটকমকে বলেন, জড়ো হওয়া ব্যক্তিরা সড়ক অবরোধ করে বিক্ষোভের চেষ্টা চালিয়েছিলো। তাই পুলিশ পদক্ষেপ নিয়েছে।

ঘটনাস্থল থেকে কয়েকজনকে আটকের কথা স্বীকার করেন তিনি। তবে তাদের সংখ্যা তাৎক্ষণিকভাবে জানাতে রাজি হননি।

তাদের গ্রেপ্তার করা হয়েছে কি না- জানতে চাইলে ওসি বলেন, “তাদের জিজ্ঞাসাবাদ করে এ বিষয়ে পরবর্তী ব্যবস্থা নেওয়া হবে।”

Police charged batons on BNP and Jamaat activists at different parts in the capital Sunday morning.

They also detained a number of activists from Shahbag, Kakrail, Motijheel and Naya Paltan areas between 8:30am and 9:00am.

BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi told The Daily Star said police resisted the party leaders and activists at different points to foil a party-sponsored reception programme for freedom fighters.

BNP organised the programme at Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB).

Witnesses said the law enforcers charged batons a number of BNP and Jamaat activists and drove them out from the IEB who gathered there in the morning.

Police also hurled teargas shell to disperse the activists.

People vote for a govt. for 5 years - not 2/3/4 years, until Hasina/Khaleda understand this, this **** will continue. Present govt has two years to still go, and the opposition started talking of bringing the govt down more than a year ago. So 2 years into a 5 year term, and Khaleda started missing her godi - Of course Hasina did the same when she was out of power.

If the govt fails to satisfy the people, they will get voted out when the next election comes around - yet these power hungry dogs, can't accept not being Kings and Queens.

looks like the black money from stock market, price of oil, all the imports of samsung tvs, tablets, phones, reduced foreign investment, Deficit Budget and hence government borrowing from banks etc has really combined into a lethal combo for the economy. Dhaka, Jan 2 (bdnews24.com) –Global beverage giant Coca-Cola will set up a plant in Bangladesh to tap growing demand for soft drink, a top investment official has said.

"The company has already registered with the Board of Investment to invest about $50 million by 2013," BoI executive chairman SA Samad told bdnews24.com.

Coke's industrial project will bring Tk 3.76 billion foreign equity and raise Tk 375 million working capital from the local market, according to the information it provided to the investment board.

The company has set its sight on starting commercial operation by Sept 2013 at a plant in Tongi where it will produce Coca-Cola, Sprite, Fanta, juice and juice-based drink, and packaged drinking water.

Currently Abdul Monem Ltd and Pran Group bottle the products.

The factory is expected to produce 222 million bottles worth Tk 9 billion a year.

Coca-Cola in 2009 submitted its first proposal to invest $51 million to expand its business in the country and submitted another proposal in 2010 expressing its intention to set up a modern production plant.

The second proposal said that the company wants to "set up an indirect wholly owned local subsidiary that will establish a new state of the art beverage manufacturing facility in Bangladesh."

The company would take at least three years to complete the processes and the entire equity capital of this subsidiary will be funded by its foreign source, it added.

The processes involved acquisition of suitable land and setting up facility, securing all required approvals, licences, consents and permission from the proper authorities.

Coca-Cola started business in Bangladesh with an agreement with Tabani, owned by a Pakistani national, in 1965.

After independence, Tabani was put under the Freedom Fighters' Welfare Trust and it continued its business up to 2008.

The multinational giant used to sell Tabani the liquid concentrate of its brands and Tabani produced cold drinks and marketed them.

The global giant asked Tabani to increase its capacity in 1978 but it failed to do so and later it signed another agreement with Abdul Monem Group to produce the popular cold drink brands.

Tabani had the right to distribute its products in greater Dhaka and Rajshahi divisions while Monem entered into a contract to distribute them in Chittagong and Khulna divisions.

The companies at that time only produced regular glass bottle (RGB) drinks and it continued production until 2001, when Monem introduced PET bottles in the market.

In 2003, Coca-Cola asked Tabani to improve its quality and set up an effluent treatment plant on the factory premises, but it did not.

Eventually, Coca Cola scrapped the contract with the Tabani in 2008 and now has come up with the investment proposal aiming to benefit from the expanding market.

আবদুর রহিম হারমাছি প্রধান অর্থনৈতিক প্রতিবেদক, বিডিনিউজ টোয়েন্টিফোর ডটকম ঢাকা, জানুয়ারি ০২ (বিডিনিউজ টোয়েন্টিফোর ডটকম)- অতীতের সব রেকর্ড ভেঙে প্রবাসীরা ডিসেম্বর মাসে ১১৪ কোটি ৪৪ লাখ ডলারের রেমিটেন্স দেশে পাঠিয়েছেন। এর আগে এক মাসে কখনই এ পরিমাণ রেমিটেন্স দেশে আসেনি। গত বছরের অগাস্ট মাসে আসা ১১০ কোটি ১৮ লাখ ডলার রেমিটেন্স ছিল এ পর্যন্ত সর্বোচ্চ। বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংকের গভর্নর আতিউর রহমান রেমিটেন্স বৃদ্ধি প্রসঙ্গে সোমবার বিডিনিউজ টোয়েন্টিফোর ডটকমকে বলেন, “এটা হলো বিদায়ী বছরের এবং স্মরণকালের মধ্যে সবচেয়ে বেশি রেমিটেন্স। এই ধারা আগামীতেও অব্যাহত থাকবে বলে আশা করছি।” তিনি বলেন, “ব্যাংকিং চ্যানেলের মাধ্যমে রেমিটেন্স প্রবাহ বাড়াতে কেন্দ্রীয় ব্যাংকের পক্ষ থেকে আমরা নানামুখি পদক্ষেপ নিয়েছি। এটা তারই প্রতিফলন।” “আমরা চাই ১০০ শতাংশ রেমিটেন্সই ব্যাংকিং চ্যানেলের মাধ্যমে আসুক। আর সে লক্ষেই আমরা কাজ করছি,” যোগ করেন তিনি। রেমিটেন্স প্রবাহ বৃদ্ধিতে সন্তোষ প্রকাশ করে বেসরকারি গবেষণা সংস্থা বিআইডিএসের গবেষক জায়েদ বখত বলেন, “যে মুহূর্তে দেশের অর্থনীতিতে সংকট চলছে। তখন এটা একটা ওয়েলকাম ইমপ্র“ভমেন্ট (খুবই ইতিবাচক সূচনা)। এ ধারা অব্যাহত থাকলে ব্যালান্স অব পেমেন্টে (লেনদেনের ভারসাম্যে) যে সমস্যা চলছে তা কাটিয়ে উঠতে সহায়তা করবে।” তার মতে, টাকার বিপরীতে ডলারের দাম অনেক বেড়ে যাওয়ায় প্রবাসীরা এখন দেশে তাদের পরিবার-পরিজনের কাছে বেশি রেমিটেন্স পাঠাচ্ছেন। তিনি বলেন, “অনেক প্রবাসী হয়তো বিদেশে টাকা জমিয়েছিলেন। এখন ডলারের দাম খুব বেশি বাড়ায় তারা তাদের জমানো অর্থ দেশে পাঠাচ্ছেন। এ কারণে রেমিটেন্স বেশি আসতে পারে।” কেন্দ্রীয় ব্যাংকের ওয়েবসাইটের তথ্য অনুযায়ী, সোমবার ব্যাংকগুলো প্রতি ডলার বিক্রি করেছে ৮২ টাকায়। গত এক বছরে ডলারের দাম বেড়েছে ১৫ শতাংশের বেশি। শুধু ডিসেম্বর মাসেই ডলারের দাম বেড়েছে পাঁচ টাকার মতো। বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংকের তথ্য পর্যালোচনা করে দেখা যায়, চলতি ২০১১-১২ অর্থবছরের প্রথম ছয় মাসে (জুলাই-ডিসেম্বর) ৬০৬ কোটি ৫৫ লাখ ডলারের রেমিটেন্স দেশে এসেছে। গত অর্থবছরের একই সময়ে যার পরিমাণ ছিল ৫৫০ কোটি ডলার। শতকরা হিসেবে এ সময়ে রেমিটেন্স প্রবাহ বেড়েছে ৯ দশমিক ২৭ শতাংশ। ২০১০-১১ অর্থবছরের জুলাই-ডিসেম্বর সময়ে আগের বছরের একই সময়ের চেয়ে এক্ষত্রে প্রবৃদ্ধির পরিমাণ ছিল ১ শতাংশের সামান্য বেশি। তথ্য পর্যালোচনায় দেখা যায়, চলতি অর্থবছরের প্রথম মাস জুলাইয়ে ১০১ কোটি ৫৫ লাখ ডলার রেমিটেন্স দেশে আসে। অগাস্ট মাসে আসে ১১০ কোটি ১৭ লাখ ডলার। সেপ্টেম্বরে আসে ৮৫ কোটি ৫৪ লাখ ডলার। অক্টোবর ও নভেম্বরে এসেছে যথাক্রমে ১০৩ কোটি ৯৪ লাখ ও ৯০ কোটি ৮১ লাখ ডলার। নভেম্বরের তুলনায় ডিসেম্বরে ২৫ দশমিক ৯২ শতাংশ বেশি রেমিটেন্স এসেছে। ২০১০ সালের ডিসেম্বরের চেয়ে ২০১১ সালের ডিসেম্বরে রেমিটেন্স বেড়েছে ১৮ দশমিক ০৯ শতাংশ। সাধারণত দুই ঈদের আগে রেমিটেন্স প্রবাহ বেড়ে থাকে। কিন্তু সে ধরনের কোনো উৎসব না থাকার পরও ডিসেম্বরে বাংলাদেশের ইতিহাসে সবচেয়ে বেশি রেমিটেন্স এসেছে। এদিকে রেমিটেন্স প্রবাহ বাড়ায় কেন্দ্রীয় ব্যাংকের বৈদেশিক মুদ্রার রিজার্ভও কিছুটা বেড়েছে। সোমবার রিজার্ভের পরিমাণ ছিল ৯৬৪ কোটি (৯ দশমিক ৬৪ বিলিয়ন) ডলার। ১৫ দিন আগেও এই রিজার্ভ ৯২০ কোটি ডলারের নেমে এসেছিল। গভর্নর আতিউর রহমান জানান, ব্যাংকিং চ্যানেলে রেমিটেন্স পাঠানোয় প্রবাসীদের উদ্বুদ্ধ করতে বিদেশে সব দ্রুতাবাসকে চিঠি দেওয়া হয়েছে। যে কোনো সমস্যা হলে প্রবাসীদের কেন্দ্রীয় ব্যাংকের সঙ্গে যোগাযোগ করতে অনুরোধ করা হয়েছে। তথ্য অনুযায়ী, ডিসেম্বরে রাষ্ট্রায়ত্ত চার বাণিজ্যিক ব্যাংকের মাধ্যমে এসেছে ৩০ কোটি ৩৯ লাখ ডলার। বিশেষায়িত দুই ব্যাংকের (কৃষি ও বেসিক ব্যাংক) মাধ্যমে এসেছে এক কোটি ৫ লাখ ডলার। ৩০ বেসরকারি ব্যাংকের মাধ্যমে এসেছে ৮১ কোটি ৬৮ লাখ ডলার। আর নয়টি বিদেশি ব্যাংকের মাধ্যমে এসেছে এক কোটি ৩০ লাখ ডলার।

গোলাম আযম কারা হেফাজতে





জামায়াতে ইসলামীর সাবেক আমির গোলাম আযমকে মানবতাবিরোধী অপরাধের মামলায় কারা হেফাজতে পাঠানোর নির্দেশ দেওয়া হয়েছে। দুপুর সোয়া ১২টার দিকে গোলাম আযমকে ঢাকা কেন্দ্রীয় কারাগারের হেফাজতে নেওয়া হয়েছে।
আজ বুধবার বেলা সাড়ে ১১টার দিকে বিচারপতি নিজামুল হকের নেতৃত্বে তিন সদস্যের আন্তর্জাতিক অপরাধ ট্রাইব্যুনাল এ আদেশ দেন। তবে এ আদেশ সঠিক হয়নি বলে মনে করেন গোলাম আযমের আইনজীবী আবদুর রাজ্জাক।

ঢাকা কেন্দ্রীয় কারাগারে গোলাম আযম

চকবাজার থানার ভারপ্রাপ্ত কর্মকর্তা (ওসি) মোহাম্মদ আলী প্রথম আলো অনলাইনকে জানান, আজ দুপুর সোয়া ১২টার দিকে শাহবাগ ও চকবাজার থানা পুলিশ গোলাম আযমকে ঢাকা কেন্দ্রীয় কারাগারে নিয়ে যান। কারা তত্ত্বাবধায়ক ও কারাধ্যক্ষ এ সময় তাঁকে গ্রহণ করেন। আনুষ্ঠানিকতা শেষে গোলাম আযমকে কারাগারে রাখা হয়।

ট্রাইব্যুনালে গোলাম আযম

আজ সকাল নয়টা ৫০ মিনিটে গোলাম আযম তাঁর আইনজীবী আবদুর রাজ্জাকের সঙ্গে ট্রাইব্যুনাল প্রাঙ্গণে আসেন।
৯ জানুয়ারি ট্রাইব্যুনাল গোলাম আযমের বিরুদ্ধে অভিযোগ আমলে নেন। একই সঙ্গে জামায়াতের আটক নেতাদের আইনজীবী প্যানেলের প্রধান আবদুর রাজ্জাককে আজকের দিনে গোলাম আজমকে ট্রাইব্যুনালে হাজির করার নির্দেশ দেন।

গ্রেপ্তারের দাবিতে মানববন্ধন

গোলাম আযম যখন ট্রাইব্যুনাল প্রাঙ্গণে আসেন তখন ট্রাইব্যুনালের বাইরে তাঁর বিচার ও ফাঁসির দাবিতে বাংলাদেশ মুক্তিযুদ্ধ সংসদ কেন্দ্রীয় কমান্ড কাউন্সিলের বিভিন্ন থানা ইউনিট, একাত্তরের ঘাতক দালাল নির্মূল কমিটি, সেক্টর কমান্ডারস ফোরাম, ব্র্যাক বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় মুটকোর্ট সোসাইটি, মুক্তিযুদ্ধ সংসদের ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের প্রাতিষ্ঠানিক ইউনিটসহ বিভিন্ন সংগঠন ঘণ্টাব্যাপী মানববন্ধন কর্মসূচি পালন করে। এ সময় তারা বিভিন্ন ব্যানার ও ফেস্টুন নিয়ে ম্লোগান ও বিক্ষোভ মিছিল করেন।
সেক্টর কমান্ডারস ফোরামের চেয়ারম্যান এ কে খন্দকার বলেছেন, গোলাম আযমকে কোনোভাবেই ছেড়ে দেওয়া যাবে না। তাঁর বিচার করতে হবে। তাঁর জন্য অনেক মানুষকে হারাতে হয়েছে। কোনো বিশেষ সুবিধা না দিয়ে অন্য সাধারণ আসামিদের মতোই তাঁর বিচার করতে হবে।
ফোরামের ভাইস চেয়ারম্যান এ কে এম শফিউল্লাহ বলেন, অনেক দিন পর তাঁকে আইনের আওতায় আনা হয়েছে। তাঁর বিচার প্রক্রিয়া দ্রুত শেষ করতে হবে।

জামিনের শুনানি

সকাল সাড়ে ১০টার দিকে ট্রাইব্যুনালের কার্যক্রম শুরু হলে গোলাম আজমের পক্ষে করা জামিন আবেদনের শুনানি হয়। মানবতাবিরোধী অপরাধের মামলা থেকে জামিন পেতে গতকাল মঙ্গলবার গোলাম আযমের পক্ষে তাঁর আইনজীবী তাজুল ইসলাম ট্রাইব্যুনালে আবেদন জমা দিয়েছিলেন।
আজ গোলাম আযমের পক্ষে শুনানি করেন আইনজীবী আবদুর রাজ্জাক। তিনি বলেন, ‘ট্রাইব্যুনালের ৯ জানুয়ারির আদেশ অনুসারে তাঁকে আজ হাজির করা হয়েছে। তাঁর বয়স ৮৯ বছরের বেশি। এ ছাড়া তিনি কারো সাহায্য ছাড়া ভালোভাবে চলাফেরা করতে পারেন না।’ তিনি আরও বলেন, এর আগে মানবতাবিরোধী অপরাধের অভিযোগে আবদুল আলীমকে গ্রেপ্তার করা হলেও শারীরিক অসুস্থতার জন্য তাঁকে জামিন দেওয়া হয়। একই কারণে তিনি গোলাম আযমের জামিনের আবেদন করেন।
রাষ্ট্রপক্ষের প্রধান আইনজীবী গোলাম আরিফ টিপু জামিন আবেদনের বিরোধিতা করে বলেন, ‘আবদুল আলীমের বিরুদ্ধে আনুষ্ঠানিক অভিযোগপত্র দাখিল হয়নি। তবে গোলাম আযমের বিরুদ্ধে অভিযোগ ইতিমধ্যে আমলে নিয়েছেন ট্রাইব্যুনাল। আবদুল আলীম ও গোলাম আযমের মামলা দুটির প্রেক্ষাপট ভিন্ন।’ তিনি আরও বলেন, আবদুল আলীম শারীরিকভাবে অসুস্থ এবং হুইল চেয়ার ছাড়া চলাফেরা করতে পারেন না। গোলাম আযমের বয়স ৮৯ বছরের বেশি হলেও তাঁর চলাফেরার জন্য হুইল চেয়ারের প্রয়োজন হয় না, যদিও তিনি বার্ধক্যজনিত নানা অসুখে ভুগছেন।

ট্রাইব্যুনালের আদেশ

ট্রাইব্যুনাল আদেশে বলেন, আবদুল আলীম শারীরিকভাবে অসুস্থ এবং হুইল চেয়ার ছাড়া চলাফেরা করতে পারেন না। গোলাম আযম হুইল চেয়ার ছাড়াই চলাফেরা করতে পারেন। এর পর ট্রাইব্যুনাল গোলাম আযমকে ঢাকা কেন্দ্রীয় কারাগারে কারা হেফাজতে পাঠানোর নির্দেশ দেন।
ট্রাইব্যুনাল আগামী ১৫ ফেব্রুয়ারি গোলাম আযমের বিরুদ্ধে অভিযোগের বিষয়ে শুনানির ধার্য করেছেন। কাল বৃহস্পতিবারের মধ্যে রাষ্ট্রপক্ষকে মামলার নথিপত্র রেজিস্ট্রারের কার্যালয়ে জমা দিতে বলা হয়েছে। আগামী রোববারের মধ্যে এসব কাগজপত্র আসামিপক্ষ রেজিস্ট্রারের কার্যালয় থেকে সংগ্রহ করবে।

গোলাম আযমের আইনজীবীর প্রতিক্রিয়া

আদেশের প্রতিক্রিয়ায় গোলাম আযমের আইনজীবী আবদুর রাজ্জাক দুপুর ১২টার দিকে ট্রাইব্যুনালের সামনে সাংবাদিকদের বলেন, ‘আদালতের ওপর সম্মান রেখেই বলছি, এই আদেশ সঠিক হয়নি। গোলাম আযম ৮৯ বছর বয়স্ক একজন ব্যক্তি। তাঁকে কারা হাজতে পাঠানো হয়েছে, যদিও এখন পর্যন্ত আমরা জানি না তাঁর বিরুদ্ধে কী অভিযোগ আনা হয়েছে। আমাদের দুর্ভাগ্য এই যে এই আদেশের বিরুদ্ধে আপিল করার কোনো সুযোগ নেই। এই আইনকে সবাই সমালোচনা করেছেন। এই আইনে মৌলিক ও সাংবিধানিক অধিকার নেই। এ জন্য সবাই এই আইনের সমালোচনা করেছেন।

নিরাপত্তা জোরদার

গোলাম আযমের হাজিরাকে সামনে রেখে ট্রাইব্যুনাল ও হাইকোর্ট এলাকায় নিরাপত্তা জোরদার করা হয়। পুলিশ সূত্র জানায়, এসব এলাকায় অতিরিক্ত ১০ প্লাটুন পুলিশ মোতায়েন করা হয়। এ ছাড়া আদালতের চত্বরে ঢোকার সময় প্রত্যেক ব্যক্তি ও সব ধরনের যানবাহন তল্লাশি করা হয়।
তবে গোলাম আযম ট্রাইব্যুনালে ঢোকার কিছুক্ষণ পর নিরাপত্তার কাজে নিয়োজিত পুলিশ সদস্যদের সঙ্গে বিভিন্ন টেলিভিশন চ্যানেলের ক্যামেরাম্যানের ধাক্কাধাক্কি হয়। এ সময় কয়েকজন ক্যামেরাম্যান তাঁদের ক্যামেরাসহ মাটিতে পড়ে যান।
