I have been disturbed with the recent report of Gen Moeen's alleged corruption. The allegation is that Gen Moeen repaid TK 66 lakh of his loan within one year... "How can a general get so much money in such a short time". This allegation is based on a recent edition of Trust bank prospectus, where Gen Moeen's loan to Trust Bank on Dec 31, 2005 was shown as TK 99,69,215 and at Dec 31, 2006 his loan was TK 33,15,323. He essentially repaid Tk 66 lakh in one year.

I am sure many of you guys have seen this report on the internet but it did not make it to the bangladesh media. A BBC reporter asked Moeen about this allegation couple of days ago, Moeen claimed that he can get a max of TK 35 lakh from the bank according to Trust bank rules and that's what he did.

Evidence:
Trust Bank Prospectus (this is a big pdf, just search for Moeen and you will find the relevant part on page 29. this shows the 2005 and 2006 loan amount)
link to to prospectus

I emailed the audit firm which prepared the prospectus to verify the numbers printed on the prospectus. They confirmed that there were no typos and they stand by the numbers.

Recent the report that provides more evidence (verifies the figure on prospectus by comparing the numbers from Trust Bank financial statement of 2005 ).

Comment:

At the end of the day, I think there are very few people who have not committed a SINGLE act of corruption, I was desperately hoping that Gen Moeen was one of them. I feel that in the in the context of bangladesh, it is an unrealistic expectation . I hope Gen Moeen will show some evidence to support his claim.

if you dont mind me pointing out, you're basing your judgement on the suspicion that he's got ill-gotten wealth. However the facts are that he has made payments back to the bank for the loan he had. Is it wrong then to repay a loan?

Just now heard Channel i news on the internet - Joy (Son of Hasina) was saying on the phone among other things that Mr. Moin seemed to be a gentleman to him.

Just another impression.

Spot on. The "source" of wealth is the key, not lawful activities involving the wealth ...

Bhai, it was a typo. Only one general we have.

Army officers get lot of money from government besides their salaries.

I've a cousin who became an army like 5 years before. He earns around 20 thousands taka per month. So based on his salary, I figured out that the higher ranked armies earns more than 1 lakh taka monthly as salary.

well that is not their salary...

Yeah they get free food and other stuff. house or jomi in low price but salary is not like what you have said. again if they r in UN mission they get a lot hence Army always rotates people. once a army goes into a UN mission he has to wait for the next one...

Huge Yaba haul in city
One of drug barons held; VoIP equipment also found

A huge quantity of Yaba tablets and foreign liquor on display at Rapid Action Battalion Headquarters in the capital yesterday. The elite force also arrested two in this connection. Photo: STAR

Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) suspects Amin Huda, arrested early yesterday at his Gulshan office with 130,000 Yaba tablets, is one of the top barons of the drug business in Bangladesh.

This is the largest ever Yaba haul in the country.

During a raid, the elite crime busters also arrested Huda's close aide Ahsanul Haque Hasan, 34. The Rab also seized over 5,000 Yaba's alternative drugs ice pills, ice pill preparing chemical, foreign liquor, phensidyle, over Tk 46 lakh and currencies of six other countries.

Illegal voice over internet protocol (VoIP) equipment estimated to be worth over Tk 5 crore was also seized from Manticor Technology Ltd office. Rab said Huda had long been running illegal businesses under cover of this office.

Huda is manufacturing Yaba tablets in Bangladesh since 1999-2000, said a source in Narcotics Control Department (NCD) asking not to be named. He learned the technology from an expert named Neogate, who visited Bangladesh from the New York in the US, he added.

The source also claimed Huda had a close link with Hawa Bhaban regarding other businesses.

Soon after his arrest, Huda told The Daily Star he has no illegal businesses. The Uganda-born claimed to be an Australian national, but could not show any documents to validate his claim.

The Rab has also recovered his Bangladeshi passport, which could not be verified immediately.

Rab officials said Huda is a nephew of controversial businessman Aziz Mohammad Bhai. The officials of Manticor Technology Ltd also corroborated the Rab statement.

Huda remained tight-lipped when The Daily Star asked him about his relationship with Bhai.

A team of Rab members arrived at Huda's office on Road No. 123 in Gulshan-1 just after midnight yesterday with Mushfiqur Rahman Tamal, one of the six youths recently held with Yaba.

During quizzing, Tamal had told the Task Force for Interrogation that his friend Amin Huda supplied them with Yaba.

As the Rab members wanted to search his office, Huda tried to resist them saying he is a foreigner. The elite force however stormed into the office and found out 132 bottles of phensidyle.

"Stains of ice pills on a five-taka note gave us confidence that we hit the right spot," said Major Saidul Alam who led the raid.

At that time, Huda who understands Bangla but speaks English said he has no illegal businesses but did not elaborate on the type of his trade. He was looking pale and said he occasionally took phensidyle when he was asked about it.

Around a dozen officials and employees at the office said Huda is managing director of the company that trades in electronics and power management. The company was supposed to submit a tender for a power plant in Ishwardi, they added.

Major Momtazur Rahman who took part in the raid said they interrogated the employees when nothing more was found on the first floor. One of them revealed that Yaba tablets were hidden in an apartment on the fourth floor.

The Rab members broke into the apartment and found the huge quantity of Yaba tablets, ice pills and other materials.

Unknown people during the raid called two officials leading the operation and threatened them with dire consequences if they advanced further, the Rab said.

Rab Director General Hasan Mahmood Khandkar has asked all including social leaders, guardians and teachers of different educational institutions to protect the young generation from the evil influence of Yaba.

He said it is not yet possible to manufacture Yaba inside the country and the drugs are being smuggled into Bangladesh through different routes.

SEIZURE LIST

The Rab also seized 818 SIM cards, one Viagra tablet, 139 bottles of foreign liquor, three pieces of IPS, one local area network switch, 12 quantum, 15 cellphones, a pair of handcuffs, six computer CPUs, $1,900, 100 Hong Kong dollars, three Saudi riyals, 450 euro, 2,500 Thai bahts, 125 Indian rupees, Tk 46,01,422, one laptop computer, 159 telluler, one gear switch, two channel boxes, three PC monitors, 2.5 litre Orthophosphoric acid, one bottle Dietheylethol and 10 tolahs of gold.

MORE ARRESTS
Meanwhile, the NCD arrested a Yaba dealer with two associates in Maghbazar yesterday afternoon with 280 Yaba tablets, 80 bottles of phensidyle, three mobile sets and Tk 4,150.

The arrestees are Mohammad Shahin and his associates Mohammad Bashar and Liton Debnath.

A very sad day for the yaba traders and consumers in the country..
Now the price for yaba would sore as the demand wud supercede the supply.
facing an uncertainly about the future of the business, the share price for the yaba would fall drastically in the share market.

bad for the economy, bad for the small enterpreneurs.

Yup the price has already risen four folds and the drive is not over yet. Its the best time to make quick money for people who are still dealing with yaba tablets. 1200 tk per piece and thousands of potential buyers. The risk level associated is obviously great but a man who can tackle the risk and go for it will make easy money very quick. I bet the two guys who got caught are going to be out very soon. Possible scenario : gets out on bail and leaves the country until the case fizzles out. I am willing to bet all I have for this. Any takers?

Default Shut up, all the bloody war criminals (Rajakar, Al Badr, Al Shams) in 1971

I'm quite taken aback by the recent voice of Ali Ahsan Mujahid, one of the Al badr members in 1971. How dare he is!!!!! shame.

We have to raise our voice against these war criminals.

The story below may be true or it may be false, but we should never assume that the current leadership is immune to abusing authority,
http://shadakalo.blogspot.com/2007/1...godfather.html

Subject Adviser Giti Ara Safia's husband threatens to kill expatriate Dr. Mahbub and his wife and grab their six storied building in Gulshan Dhaka.

Giti Ara Safia Chowdhury is again in the news after she and her husband tried to grab property of an US expatriate Dr. Mahbubul Islam and his wife threatening them to kill.

Our famous infamous (Oghton Ghoton Potioshi) Adviser to Caretaker Government Mrs. Giti Ara Safia Chowdhury wife of BNP nominated EX Member of Parliament Nazim Kamran Chowdhury and Sister-in-Law of our Chief Adviser Dr. Fakhruddin Ahmed is again in the news.

No, this time it is not for steamrolling over poor jute mill worker but for beating, threatening to kill and illegally grabbing a six storied building in Gulshan Dhaka.

Dr. Mahbubul Islam who is a professor of St. Francis University of Pennsylvania and his wife Farhana Islam jointly holds a press conference today October 25, 2007 in Dhaka Reporters Unit conference room.

News Link: http://www.daily- dinkal.com/ details.php? nid=10685&pubdate=2007- 10-26

Mr. and Mrs. Islam who owns a six storied building in Gulshan Dhaka alleged that their property at Gulsha-2 Road number 41 holding 7A which houses Giti Ara's ad firm Adcom and his husbands firm Sign Adage and Megnavission is been forcefully grabbed by Caretaker Government Adviser Giti Ara Safia Chowdhury and his husband Nazim Kamran Chowdhury for some time. Islam couple brought their complained to RAB unit1 commander on December 6th of 2006 but no justice been received

On Monday 22nd of October Nazim Kamran Chowdhury husband of Adviser Giti Ara himself, Adviser Giti Ara's brother Abu Rushed Tarak, cousin Mokim Chowdhury and along with their gang attacked Mr. Mahbubul Alam and his wife with iron rods and sticks. Mr. Mahbub was hospitalized.

Adviser Giti Ara's husband did not stopped there he slapped Mrs. Farhana Islam when she was begging him for his husbands life. Nazim Kamran tore her Shari and used savage language and threatens to kill her and her husband, asking his gangs to drive the pickup truck over her husband Dr. Mahbubul Islam.

Both of them appeared in front of journalist and described the torture of powerful adviser Giti Ara Safia and her family. They asked for government to save them from this powerful land grabbers.

Can Dr. Fakhruddin do justice or he will take the side of her beloved Sister-in-Law is next to be seen. We heard lot of advice from Dr. Fakhruddin that no one in the country is above the law. Nation wants to see if Adviser Giti Ara Safia is above the law or under the law.

Sincerely
Shamim Chowdhury

Yaba Business
2 BNP leaders' son, daughter involved

Law enforcers have mounted watch on two top BNP leaders' children, who are allegedly involved in Yaba trade for long, said Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) after quizzing some arrested drug dealers.

Akhter Hamid Pabon, son of BNP Secretary General Khandaker Delwar Hossain, is allegedly involved in Yaba business, said a Rab official asking not to be named.

The elite force member said arrested drug baron Amin Huda and three of the six youths of well-off families also mentioned the name of the daughter of an influential minister of the immediate past BNP-led alliance government.

The former minister's daughter along with her husband is reported to have run Yaba trade, he added.

The media has also carried out reports on the involvement of Pabon and a former minister's daughter in this connection.

Rab sources said Paban is one of the leading Yaba dealers in the country. He is accused in at least a dozen criminal cases and blamed for other offences including arms and drug dealing, land grabbing and extortion.

He was arrested in March 2005 in an attempted murder case and in June 2006 in a carjacking case.

Saifur acting BNP chief, Hafiz secretary general

Tue, Oct 30th, 2007 12:45 am BdST - Source
Dhaka, Oct 29 (bdnews24.com) -- Former finance minister M Saifur Rahman Monday said he had been made acting chief of the BNP and Hafiz Uddin Ahmed had been appointed acting secretary general, in a major turn of events in the troubled party.

The announcement came from Saifur's press briefing after a meeting at his Gulshan home.

The decision taken at the BNP standing committee's meeting will be sent to BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia for approval.

Khandaker Delwar Hossain, earlier installed by Khaleda as secretary general, replaced Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan. Both remain the members of the standing committee.

Delwar was relieved of all responsibilities as secretary general for health reasons, according to the meeting decision, quoted by Saifur.

Bhuiyan, who was expelled as the secretary general by Khaleda in September, attended the meeting along with Chowdhury Tanveer Ahmed Siddiqui, RA Gani, Khandaker Mahbubuddin Ahmed, Mahbubur Rahman and M Shamsul Islam.
