Harris handed 59 years behind bars
Court Correspondent

A Dhaka court yesterday, for the third time, sentenced Harris Chowdhury, political secretary to detained former prime minister Khaleda Zia, to 59 years' imprisonment in connection with giving a government automobile to his friend for using it.

CASE AGAINST HARRIS
Judge Moahmmad Azizul Haque of the Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court handed down the sentence on Harris, in absentia, dividing terms of offence into five parts.

The term of offence starts from February 13, 2002 and ends on January 31, 2007.

But the convict will have to serve only 10 years' imprisonment if arrested or he surrenders, as the court gave the 10 years' highest punishment for a term.

The court could not deliver the verdict against one of his accomplices Amin Badal, who used the automobile, as the proceedings of the case against him was earlier stayed on an order from the High Court (HC).

The court gave the verdict sentencing Harris to 44 years' imprisonment under section 409 (Criminal breach of trust by public servant) of the Bangladesh Penal Code (BPC) while Tk 21 lakh as fine under section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act. If he fails to pay the fine, he will have to serve another 15 years more in jail.

In his judgement, the court said the charges brought against Harris were proved beyond doubt and the punishment of the fugitive would be effective from the day of his arrest or surrender.

Hotel Purbani Director & His So-Called Wife YABA Beauty Arrested

Staff Correspondent

Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) yesterday picked up Mahbubur Rahman Joynal, managing director of Hotel Purbani International, and his 'girl friend' and suspected Yaba peddler Nikita alias Zannatul Ferdousi on their way to surrender before a Dhaka court.

Witnesses said uniformed Rab personnel picked up Nikita from the court premises at around 4:00pm while she along with her lawyers was heading towards the building in which Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court, Dhaka is located.

About the same time, Joynal, accompanied by his lawyers, appeared before the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Habibur Rahman and submitted a surrender petition. The court, however, did not entertain the petition as the court was already closed for the day.

The Rab members took Joynal into custody as he came out of the courtroom, failing to surrender to the court.

I came across a guy who was confused why the govt was suddenly after something called YABA. He reckons it could be found at almost any household side by side with Paracetamol!!

"Phencidyle sort of things might be worth looking at given the fact the young generation is being destroyed by that, why Yaba?!!"

Has anybody got hold of any analysis/feature on what this Yaba is (not what it does but the extent of danger compared with that of Phencidyle)?

Check this link... it does not look like a benign drug
http://www.cesar.umd.edu/cesar/drugs/yaba.asp

Risks from Yaba... it is considered to be a Schedule II substance under the Controlled Substances Act. Schedule II drugs, which include cocaine and PCP, have a high potential for abuse.
http://www.usdoj.gov/ndic/pubs5/5048/#risks

I feel your friend might have a conflict of interest The active ingredient of phensidyl is codeine phosphate, which is also a schedule II substance.... high concentration of codeine phosphate is dangerous. The fact that is used at low concentration in some drugs which are available over the counter, kinda show that it is quite benign at low concentration.

I saw the news conference regarding the arrest of Nikita. The police was mentioning how her boyfriend spent 70 lakhs on plastic surgery for her. And 60 thousand a month to take care of her skin. I know the money they spent might be earned in illegal ways but is plastic surgery relevant? And why did they confiscate viagra?

well its kinda breaking news but its not about politics. SO Mods if you think this thread is only for polictical breaking news please let me know and i will remove it from here..

OK The rank for all universities in Indian subcontinent for the year 2007 by WEBOMATRICS is out Only 5 university from BD made the list.
1st...BUET (ranked 24 in indian subcontinent)
2nd...Dhaka Univ (ranked 56 )
3rd...East West Univ (ranked 64 )
4th...AUST
(Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology)(ranked 69)
5th...NSU (ranked 92)
Also A teacher of AUST,
Golam Mostafa Sir(Dept. of EEE, AUST) has been ranked 25th among 1200 scientist all over the globe by MIT university of USA .

Sir has developed some sort of formula to reduce the number of computation cycle. This formula would help to add without considering the carry.. thus reducing the computation cycle. Sir has delivered the same lecture to 100 students of IUT and 100 of AUST. Only 1 student from AUST has come with the idea to implement it and his paper has been selected and nominated by IEEE. The jury board was surprised to know that a 3rd yr student could come up with such an idea and asked about the person behind the idea. the student informed them about GM and they nominated him as the Scientist of Excellence for the year 2007. GM sir is also going to work with MIT with a vision to hold the honor in 2009.

Source is internal Mail from the University.

Anyway I thought its a great achievement by a BD computer scientist. And I am proud that he was also my teacher.

Hey Nikita is it cold
In your little corner of the world
You could roll around the globe
And never find a warmer soul to know

Oh I saw you by the wall
Ten of your tin soldiers in a row
With eyes that looked like ice on fire
The human heart a captive in the snow

This is one of my favorite songs by Elton John. This is a must-listen song category type. I am feeling sad for Nikita now, lol.

Lt.Col (retd) Rashid speaks in a 5 part exclusive interview with Channel i Tritio Matra, 1 am BST, 8 November 2007 onwards. I'm interested to hear what he has to say.

For those wondering who he is, he has been one of many discussed individuals on these BC forums... important part of a very touchy and provocative topic.

Nat'l Revolution and Solidarity Day today
Source: DS
"The National Revolution and Solidarity Day will be observed today commemorating the civil-military upsurge of 1975.
On this day in 1975, soldiers and civilians revolted jointly and freed the then chief of army staff Ziaur Rahman from captivity in Dhaka Cantonment.
The day is a public holiday."

I always wonder about this "Nat'l Revolution and Solidarity Day".
Today I guess I found few answers. A very good article in today's "Bhorer Kagoj".
Link.

FIGTS WITHIN BNP
Saifur & Co face wrath of Khaleda loyals

DS

Police charge truncheons on leaders and activists of pro-Khaleda faction of BNP at Bijoy Sarani-Rokeya Sarani intersection in the capital yesterday. Photo: STAR
Top leaders of Saifur-led BNP yesterday faced the wrath of Khaleda Zia loyalists while Lt Gen (retd) Mahbubur Rahman, member of BNP standing committee, was assaulted near the grave of the party's founder late president Ziaur Rahman.

The other leaders who were harassed by pro-Khaleda activists were Acting Chairman Saifur Rahman, Dhaka Mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka and chairperson's adviser Maj Gen (retd) ZA Khan.

In separate incidents, five people including a police personnel were injured as police clubbed BNP activists several times to maintain order at the entrance of the grave of Zia. Police also picked up three activists from the scene.

The pro-Khaleda activists assaulted Mahbub on his way to his car near Bijoy Sarani and Crescent Lake Road intersection at Sher-E-Bangla Nagar after placing wreath at the late president's grave on the occasion of National Revolution and Solidarity Day.

The mob of activists surrounded Mahbub, grabbed him by the collar and used their shoes to hit him with. Police came to his rescue and dispersed the activists who were shouting pro-Khaleda slogans, said witnesses.

The Khaleda loyalists hurled shoes at Acting Chairman Saifur Rahman's car while another group gave chase to Mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka, president of BNP's Dhaka city unit, and Maj Gen (retd) ZA Khan, adviser to BNP chairperson, as the leaders were leaving the premises of Zia's grave after paying their tribute.
