Default My prediction on the World Cup 2007 Squad - to be selected by Faruque & Co.

In the other thread, we all mentioned as to whom we'd like to be in our World Cup team. However, I predict that Faruque Ahmed and Company would select the following team. If you have not read the Raquibul and other former captain's comments on the World Cup Dream Team, then please do so now, and then read the rest of the post in this thread.

1. Shahriar Nafees:

Automatic choice. The only question is, if he gets injured, then who do we pick in his place?

2. Aftab Ahmed:

Automatic choice. The only queston is, if he gets injured or is not fit, then who do we pick in his place? Also, is he restricted from bowling? My prediction to that question: Tamim Iqbal will definitely be in the Bangladesh first eleven in place of Aftab, even though Tamim will not be able to fulfil what Aftab could/can do.

3. Saquib Ul Hasan:

Our weakness in selecting the automatic choice. Although Saquib has proven that he's an automatic choice, but he has not yet really proven his worthy against the really big teams. Although he will be in the first eleven for his consistency and reliability, but if we had the time, I wish he could be a little more experinced while playing agaist the likes of India or Sri Lanka a little more. However, it is always better late than never.

4. Ashraful:

Its our bad luck and his own that he's in bad form. However, he is an automatic choice, and we cannot afford to not keep him in the side at least for the first two games and then we'll see what happens. Also, this is the position that other players like Mushfiqur, Tushar, Rajin can look upto - for stealing a place in the final eleven, if they're selected tomorrow.

5. Bashar:

An automatic choice. This time, it'll be upto him to lead the side - unlike the last time. If he is injured or not fit, then I don't want to think about what'll happen next.

6. Pilot:

An automatic choice. Although a large number of people may want to disagree with this prediction, however, almost all former players-captains would like to have Pilot in the side - just to be in the safe side. I mean, nobody want Mushfiqur to be the keeper at a crucial stage vs. IND or SL in a situation, for example, Mashrafee/Rafique/Razzak bowls a really good delivery, and the batsman is also fooled, however, the man behind the stumps failed to catch the ball - this is not what anyone would like to see. Also, lets think about this situation when we're 4 wickets down for 20 runs vs. IND or SL - in comes Mushfiqur and plays a terrible shot and gives a Hannan Sarkar/Alok Kapali 'kelas' smile - I would really hate if something like this happens.

7. Mashrafee:

An automatic choice. What will happen to us if he gets injured or not fit? I don't want to think about it.

8. Rafique:

An automatic choice. What will happen to us if he gets injured or not fit? I don't want to think about it. Razzak with the ball or Saquib with the bat will be able to handle things? I don't think so.

9. Opener: (one of the following three)

a) Mehrab Hossain Junior:

Too slow - like Javed Omar. He may be a good test cricket opener, but not good enough for an ODI, and specifically, not good enough for the World Cup.

b) Tamim Iqbal:

Brilliant stroke-maker. Like said earlier - if Aftab is not fit, then Tamim's place in the final eleven is a certainty. However, a lot of time will be spent tomorrow in the selectors' meeting over including him. Everybody would wish if we had given him the opportunity to play a few more ODIs. The best thing that can happen to him is to be selected in the World Cup squad, but perhaps at the peril of the BD team. One thing is for sure, Dav will also spend some time talking to include him in the squad.

I predict, in the end he may get in; sacrificing a bowler, perhaps?

c) Rajin Saleh:

The lone-multi-skilled-allrounder in the team. And I mean multi-skilled meaning multi-skilled - the lone right arm off spinner in the squad, perhaps the only player who could adjust in playing both in the opening and in the middle order batting position; and add to that, his fielding. Although he was not in the Zimbabwe squad, but his name will be mentioned on more than one occassion in tomorrow's selectors' meeting. The other advantages of him in the squad being - his experience and the wickets of West Indies - similar to Bangladesh where he was successful against the likes of India. Whether he'll get a place in the final eleven, will depend on how Tamim/Rajin himself plays in the warm up matches.

10. Abdur Razzak:

Automatic choice. Rafique's partner in the middle overs. However, if the wickets are not in favor of turn, then either he or Rafique could be out of the final eleven, but not out of the final fifteen.

11. Shahadat:

I was gonna say automatic choice. However, he could give away too many runs, however, the value of the last match in Zimbabwe cannot be overshadowed. He does have a cool head with the bat, although it was against Zimbabwe, and we dont know whether he can do a repeat act if he faces similar situation with the bat vs. IND or SL.

12. Tapash Baisya:

NOT an automatic choice. The only thing in favor of him is that he has been in the Zimbabwe squad and played a couple (?) of matches in Zimbabwe. He has the experience and the batting skill if we need him to bat. Otherwise, he can be just as expensive as Shahadat.

13. Md. Sharif:

NOT an automatic choice. The only question mark is, is he fit? Although many have said about his batting form recently, but he hasn't proved that in the lone game that he played. Also, he could play just one game in Zimbabwe, which could go against his inclusion.

14. Alok Kapali:

NOT an automatic choice. The only thing that goes in his favor is that the wickets in West Indies are similar to Bangladesh's and Kapali has done better at home conditions than abroad. And also, lets not forget his vast experience. However, his form and the selectors' dis-interest in him could go against his favor. His name will definitely not be mentioned more than once in tomorrow's meeting. However, he could be the 17th or 18th Stand by player. And the only other thing going for him is Ashraful's failure.

15. Tushar Imran:

NOT an automatic choice. The only thing going for him is that he was selected and also played a game in Zimbabwe. There'll be a debate whether Tushar Imran would be selected or Rajin/Mushfiqur Rahim would be selected for the middle order stand by position in the final fifteen. Even if he's selected, which I doubt he will, he may get only one game in place of Ashraful.

16. Syed Russell:

NOT an automatic choice. He has not been selected in the BD squad for a long time (seems like a long time). However, he may be included in the team if only to increase variation in our pace attack. He's also a little more economical than Shahadat or Tapash.

17. Mushfiqur Rahim:

The only thing going for him is his maiden fifty vs. Zimbabwe in the last match. Other than that, I don't see any other reason for him to be included in the World Cup squad. The best that he could do is knock the names of Tushar Imran and/or Rajin Saleh out of the final fifteen World Cup Squad and get his name to be placed there. Although I can hardly say that he'll get to play more than a game, if we can't qualify for the 2nd round. If we can qualify for the 2nd round, and if Ashraful fails to perform in all of the first (or only) 3 games, then there's a chance for him to get into the final eleven.

Can't agree with Pilot's selection. What has he done in the last year or so to bolster the "experience factor" arguement? He has dropped some dollies, can't buy a run anywhere. How is he an automatic selection for the world cup? We are going to the WorldCup not to save face but to win matches. Pilot fits the earlier objective not the latter.

Whether we like it or not, his inclusion is inevitable. The selecters themselves being old cricketers, love Pilot because of their old days when they played together. Other than that, in technical terms, Pilot doesn't have much more to offer than Mushfiq. However, the other important thing is, even if Pilot is included, Mushfiq is still coming to the tournament, coz the squad would like to stick to a backup keeper, as well as a batsman who has recently played a successful innings.

I think Mehrab is out. Tamim is probably in (based on the enthusiastic move by the selecters in the Zimbabwe tour). Rajin is definitely in IMO. They would want to go with two openers.

Out of the rest, I think Shahadat, and Razzak are definitely in. They will be doing lottery with Rasel and Tapash. IMO, Rasel would be better.

Did I go over 15? Sorry, but I'm in a rush right now, so will count when I come back

Taking Pilot to WC is simply a waste of place. If selectors decide to take him, Mushfiq must sit out. There is no point taking two Wicket Keeper in a 15 man squad.

Now, after Zim tour, everyone knows who is better and who should sit out.

Good effort fwullah. Anyway, too many threads on the same topic.

With Mushfiq we have a choice of sending him early when we are 2 down and still have a chance of posting a defendable total. With Pilot we continue to send stroke makers and go down with disgrace.

When "we're 4 wickets down for 20 runs vs. IND or SL" we are not going to win that match now are we? Pilot can't do anything for sure other than a 20+ runs with 60+ balls. Mushfiq has matured enough to do the same.

Those with some brains should now about this.

15. ???

Who will be the 15th player then? Sharif? Tushar?

Bearing in mind that we'll get only 3 matches in the world cup, I think the selectors will have a hard time choosing the 15th player.

Mushfiqur Rahim can play in the middle order just as a specialist batsman, although I wouldn't keep him in my World Cup Eleven.

"When "we're 4 wickets down for 20 runs vs. IND or SL" we are not going to win that match now are we?" - Oops, I didn't notice that. Even after that, I still think our selectors will have hard time to select the 15th player tomorrow.

Really hard choice between Pilot and Mushfique if selectors decide to take 1 wicketkeeper. Probably the selectors will include both. If not, Pilot will go as he has experience and saved Bangladesh from embarrassment in a lot of matches.

My god !!!!!!!! How can people think of Pilot as an automatic choice !!!!!!! You must have woken up on the wrong side of the bed today. People who think about Pilot as part of the team now are the ones who I will call reactive and very very very old fashioned in the sense even today they will be happy with respectable losses. A team should be chosen based on performance not the age and number of matches of a player. Batting wise Pilot has nothing to offer. Keeping-wise I dont think mushfique is so far behind pilot. All we need from our keeper is to take the regulation catches and the regulation stumpings. Even if mushfique is not "keeper extraordinaire" but can do the simple things right then he is a better selection than Pilot. If selectors choose Pilot over Mushfique then that would just show that they are gutless old haggards. Opening has to be either rajin or tamim but definitely no Mehrab. Third pacer is an issue where I have not been able to make a decision.

New Age: Speculation game on as Tigers return today

Speculation over Bangladesh’s World Cup team has intensified as the deadline of the International Cricket Council to submit a 15-member squad is drawing nearer.

As per ICC stipulation, participating countries must submit their final rosters for cricket’s showpiece event by February 13, it leaves the Faruque Ahmed-led selection committee only 48 hours left to finalise their composition.

A couple of changes are expected in the squad that won the four-match one-day series in Zimbabwe 3-1.

Immediately after the team returns home today at 9:30am the selectors are scheduled to hold a meeting with coach Dav Whatmore and captain Habibul Bashar.

It is almost certain that the focus of their discussions will be on whether to retain Mushfiqur Rahim as an additional wicketkeeper as the regular choice Khaled Mashud is set to return after an injury-forced lay off.

Mushfiq’s performance during the Zimbabwe tour especially with the bat if not behind the stumps was very impressive and that must have given the selectors ample food for thought over the crucial position.

But it is very likely that both Mashud and Mushfiq will be in the World Cup tour party and in that case middle-order batsman Tushar Imran faces the axe.

Tushar, who was not picked in the playing eleven until the fourth and final match, suffered a golden duck So, his place in the World Cup squad remains in doubt.

There are a few more positions that demand a long discussion not least choice of openers.

While vice-captain Shahriar Nafees is assured, he lacked a worthy partner in Zimbabwe as neither Mehrab Hossain Jr nor Tamim Iqbal clicked having played two matches each.

The selectors may be tempted to retain either of one beside going for a third choice in either experienced Javed Omar or Rajin Saleh. If Javed or Rajin make it to the World Cup squad, then Mehrab will be the likely omission because of his similar batting approach.

As of Javed and Rajin, the latter enjoys some advantage because of his performances in the just concluded first phase of the Dhaka Premier Cricket League. While Javed was inconsistent, Rajin played superbly, especially in the latter half that earned him two centuries and as many fifties.

There is also a chance for seamer Syed Rasel to get a recall at the expense of Mohammad Sharif, who was anything but ordinary in Zimbabwe having been included to the squad after a five-year interval. Moreover, he raised a doubt about his fitness after limping off in the fourth one-dayer without completing an over.

i agree with that, please say good bye to pilot form our cricket team, that would be a wise decision.

IMO, rafique (although he only played 2 matches against zim) and razzak, handled the zimbabwean pitches very well. Razzak seems to cope well to different pitches, and i think both him and rafique are a necessity in the final eleven.

Only change that I see coming in the national team is Rajin in place of Mehrab.

Prince backed up Mushfiq well, and Bashar does not want Pilot in the team. Close backed up Sharif well, and Faruque does not want Rasel or Reza back in the team.

About Tushar, the selectors will make themselves look ridiculous if they drop him based on one match (which is why I so hoped he will get atleast two matches). Last time Faruque talked about Tushar, he was already apologetic that Tushar goes in and out of the team so frequently. Only way Tushar may get the axe is if BCB high up really really force the selectors to accomodate Pilot in the team as the second keeper.

Well, there is still an unpredictable factor in the selection- DW, he has not said anything at all what is in his mind.

Pilot-Tushar
Rasel-Sharif
Rajin-Mehrab

Today's Prothom Alo, HB mentioned that there is enough experience in the team. He wants performer over experince. Some big casuality is waiting. My guess Pilot; but would not be surprised if it is Ash
