Default Bangladeshi Coach goes West

ACC

Level III Coach Shahidul Alam, a former Premier Division cricketer who has played for Bangladesh representative sides and who is currently the High Performance Program Senior Coach as well as National U-17 Coach for Bangladesh, has been offered a 3-month post through Middlesex County Cricket Club.

Backed by the Bank of England's 'Chance to Shine' campaign, the focus area are the schools of Tower Hamlets in East London and Mr. Alam will be leading the pilot project. The aim is to increase the level of cricket participation and awareness of the predominantly Bangladeshi youth in this part of London.

Default East meets West

ACC

Bangladeshi coach Shahidul Alam reports back from his summer post at the Middlesex County Cricket Club.

Shahidul Alam, right behind Shane Warne

Working in tandem with the 'Spin to Win' programme, sponsored by a UK cricket-equipment manufacturer, Mr. Alam was present when Shane Warne dealt first-hand advice to a predominantly Asian crowd of aspiring spinners, eager to gain tips from the great spinner.

A short demonstration was given at the nets where Warne delivered a barrage of googlies, flippers, leg breaks and top-spinners.

An update on Shahidul Alam's work in UK:

More primary school children are now being taught cricket in Tower Hamlets than in any other town, village or borough in the British Isles!

Shahidul Alam helps another batch of young hopefuls along the way

Ever since the Metropolitan Police approved a £10,000 grant to Capital Kids Cricket in a bid to inject new interest into the lives of local youngsters, a wave of cricket enthusiasm has spread through the borough like wildfire.

And an unprecedented three days had to be set aside for the regional Asda Kwik Cricket Year 6 Festival in June when every single one of the borough’s 66 primary schools applied to enter a team!

Without doubt the prime factor behind the Tower Hamlets cricket explosion has been the arrival on to the Capital Kids teaching team of Shahidul Alam, the charismatic and gifted coach to the Bangladesh Under 19 national side.

Is he the same Ratan who used to open for Rupali Bank, a left arm pace bowler?

Just saw this news on the net, our Ratan bhai is having hard time to straighten up Malaysian boys-

Quote:
An embarrassing batting collapse saw Malaysia go down by 153 runs to England in the opening match of the second HSBC Under-19 Invitational Tri-Series at the Kinrara Oval yesterday.

Such was the severity of the Malaysia’s poor performance that coach Shahidul Alam Ratan lambasted his players immediately after the match.

Ratan, who is from Bangladesh, was overheard telling the players in the dressing room that he wondered whether they were took their responsibilities seriously.

He questioned the team’s lack of commitment and said if they continued to play the way they did, they would not make the team for the Under-19 World Cup next February.*

The coach warned them he would bring in other players, even if they were less skilled, to replace the current batch.

* Malaysia is hosting the next U/19 WC in 2008, so their team will be an auto qualifier for the tourney.

It's Shaun Williams, he's probably the High Performance Unit Manager at BCB.
