^I'm waiting for the BR DVD to come out. Loved 'Baraka'. Also a big fan of 'Powaqqatsi' and 'Koyaanisqatsi'. Spiritual experiences all.

Watched Resident Evil: Retribution... 2/10 (2 points for getting to see Mila Jovovich kick some zombie behinds)

Went to the theater with a relatively low expectation to see a dumb action movie, but even then the movie felt like torture. Mind numbing techno sound, relentless slow motion action sequences with no suspense, zero script, character development and a very stupid plot pretty much sums up the movie. Compared to this the first resident evil movie was at the level of "Inception"

I think I will stick to the games and the animated versions from now on

Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father

Plot(c+p from wiki)
Quote:
Kuenne's close friend Andrew Bagby was murdered by Shirley Jane Turner after Bagby ended their tumultuous relationship. Shortly after she was arrested, she announced she was pregnant with Bagby's child, a boy she named Zachary. Kuenne decided to interview numerous relatives, friends, and associates of Andrew Bagby and incorporate their loving remembrances into a film that would serve as a cinematic scrapbook for the son who never knew him. As events unfold, the film becomes a sort of true-crime documentary.
This is a brilliant, brilliant documentary and the twist is incredible. 90 minutes you definitely won't regret...but this is not something you'll watch again and again.

8/10

What are you talking about man? Horrible? Maybe not that far ahead when you compare it to the other 2, but not all that bad. My favorite is still the first one.

A historian friend of mine who specializes in the history of Chittagong was quite disappointed by the Chittagong trailer. This is what he said:

"Really, really horrified by the glorification of bourgeois nationalist terrorism. Historical falsification that glorifies violence by tiny revolutionary minorities, unable and unwilling to organize mass struggles (why not a film on peasant struggles? why one on middle-class thugs with guns?) and to find something redemptive in violence are not just lies, they are dangerous- especially when violence was directed so callously at the innocent such as the railway association ball.

Almost nobody knows this, and even people on the left are happy with the raiders- many went on to become committed communists like Kalpana Dutt. But the movement was born in the circles of the abhoy ashram, which was a swarajist akhara institution that had no muslim support or participation, no real political programme beyond nationalism, and, on its radical fringe, nationalist terrorism- these were not bodies that excited cross-communal dialogue. It was closely allied with Subhas Chandra Bose's radical politics, those that have been called "middle class radicalism". It was a bloodbath, particularly for unfortunate indian policemen, presumably muslim bengalis, drafted in to capture the rioters. Surya Sen had his revenge by planting a bomb at the european railway institute at Pahartali, which is where working class anglo-indians lived, killing an unlucky Mrs. Sullivan.

I don't want to be lame, and say that seething rage and radical anti-colonial action were not significant: it was a great shock to the British administration. But the movement had massive contradictions: a markedly communal character (even worse, without realizing just how much it represented bhadralok agitation only), no programme, and a complete and fascistic fascination with the redemptive power of violence- which, in its extreme form, resulted in the racially-motived bombing of the railway club- as a response for the fact that the police opposed them. (what, did they expect the Raj to surrender after they stormed the armoury killing the officers and men there?)."

Watched Dredd. The violence was probably a notch above my comfort level but overall an effective and very intense action movie. 7/10

Anyone watched Looper? I think that movie would result in some interesting discussions regarding the ending and the possible explanation/questions
