ICC targets YouTube World Cup clips

March 26, 2007
The ICC has ordered YouTube to remove World Cup clips claiming copyright infringement. The ICC and the rights holder to the event, the Global Cricket Corporation, took the action after hundreds of World Cup clips appeared on the site.
"We are here to protect the commercial broadcast rights for the ICC and GCC and there is an issue here," said Christopher Stokes, the chief executive of online rights protection agency NetResult, which represents the ICC, told Media Guardian.
"In general there is a dilemma for rights holders in that they want people to enjoy the event but also have stringent contracts with TV broadcasters and with mobile rights holders. In today's world, broadcasters buy highlights as well as live coverage and mobile rights means clips. There is an obligation to protect them."
YouTube was reported to have agreed to the request and the clips were gradually being removed from the site. However, one of the problems faced is that as fast as the offending clips are withdrawn, more are uploaded. A search this morning showed only a handful of clips from the Bangladesh v India game, and yet a few hours later it was dozens

Once more cricket shoots itself in the foot
Quote:
Andrew Miller in St Kitts
March 26, 2007
This morning, for the first time in a hectic week on and off the field, I found myself with a bit of time to spare. After a leisurely rise, I knocked off a few magazine articles over breakfast and then, as is my wont, decided to have a quick browse of YouTube to see what gems had been unearthed overnight.
I can hardly be alone in that. No-one who uses the internet to read these articles can be unaware of this online Leviathan. Founded by three geeks in Illinois in early 2005 and flogged 18 months later to Google for a cool US$1.65billion, YouTube is arguably the single biggest internet phenomenon of them all.
More than 100 million video clips are viewed through its portal every day, including - yes - cricket snippets. A veritable online emporium has been created in the past 12 months, with rare archive footage emerging of such historical gems as Sobers' six sixes, Shane Warne's ball of the century and much much more. Including, until the last few hours, highlights of the ongoing World Cup.

I have a feeling this has to do with stopping india-MOCKING videos from spreading. YouTube has been around for a while, it does not provide any live or download able video, so I wonder why else would ICC suddenly be so itchy to stop these.

Another selfish move by ICC. Youtube isn't interfaring with their live broadcasting of the matches, and what on earth is the big deal if people gets to see some glorious moments from this highly eventful World Cup for free! Shame on the world cricket dictators.
Along with Andrew Miller's take on the ICC's decision, many of the general public have also expressed anger towards ICC, including our own Miraz bhai from UK, who writes :
Quote:
Globalization of cricket and increasing its popularity worldwide is simply paper talk for ICC. The current ICC is blind due to the dangerous cricket market of India. This YouTube decision is really innovative to make the game more centered within eight nations. ICC will realize today's mistake but with huge cost.

This is just an excuse to remove all those parody videos of Indian team. Many people worldwide are watching BD vs IND highlights and witnessing the humiliation of India. I'm disappointed but not surprised by ICC's move.
Andrew Miller wrote a great reply:

Does this game know of any other ways to shoot itself in the foot? Only three days ago it was suggested on this website that the events of the past week might serve as a wake-up call for cricket's fiscally obsessed powerbrokers. Fat chance. A game run increasingly by lawyers for lawyers, has deemed it necessary to go to war on the very online enthusiasts who can spread the word of a game whose reputation has been dragged through the mincer. - CricInfo

A bad move by the ICC and GCC. What they want?
Comparing with any other sports cricket is far behind in popularity and most importantly it's ICC's responsibility to make sure that there is no obstacles to air the WC all over the world. It's not like the tv channels are not interested to telecast the event but it's the greedy ICC that making this game lame.
For example the football WC was aired in couple of terestrial channels here in the UK but not in any sattelite channel. But it's fully different scenario for cricket WC. How many people got sky in the UK? Not more than a third of the population.

How anti-thematic to the notion of "globalising" and "popularising" the sport. Very sad that money and greed are ruining this noble sport.

I dont understand this people.. If associations like NHL, NFL and NBA doesnt have any problems with Youtube then why ICC is having problems? Stupid people..then they shouldnt allow people with cams and cameras in the stadium.. copyright issues.. lol..Main fact what Cricinfo is trying to say is that.. BCCI is pissed to see those IND vs BAN games on Youtube. lol... they are pressuring ICC to remove those...hahaha
