Default Bashar hits out at India and Pakistan -- Your thoughts

From cricinfo --

'They don't have the right to play in the Super Eights'

India and Pakistan deserved to leave - Bashar

April 9, 2007

Habibul Bashar has hit out at World Cup killjoys who bemoan the absence of India and Pakistan, saying the sub-continental giants do not have a right to be in the finals.

"Someone asked me whether the World Cup has become stale after the exit of India and Pakistan," Bashar wrote in his column in the Prothom Alo. "It seems that at any cost India and Pakistan should be included in the Super Eight. They are not saying that India and Pakistan lost two out of their three first round matches.

"They don't have the right to play in the Super Eight. If this attitude persists, one should organise 'Top Ranking Cup' instead of the World Cup, where the teams will play according to their rankings. The World Cup is not a property of one or two teams. It belongs to every one and the best team will win the Cup."

Bashar was clearly irked after Bangladesh pulled off a major upset by beating South Africa by 67 runs. He wrote in the Bengali daily that the win would silence some of the "noises" heard after Bangladesh lost their first two matches of the Super Eights.

"I think this victory will stop all these things," Bashar said. "Instead of spoiling the show, Bangladesh has made the World Cup more interesting. There are now plenty of teams now fighting for the semi-finals.

"We have a bright chance to play the semi-final if we can beat England. The English team has some good players but they are not playing well in the World Cup. So it will not be impossible to beat them."

Bangladesh meet England in their next match at Barbados on Wednesday, followed by Ireland and West Indies at the same venue.

I don't think he "hits out", but just expresses his opinion, i.e. if you win games you go through, simple.

Let us not sensationalize and hype things up. The writer is probably an Indian and it is sensationalistic writing like this which lead to (apparently) Zaheer Khan's restaurant being damaged and Indian fans commiting suicide.

Lets be like Sri Lankan fans, calm and sensible but passionate.

for too long, bangali cricketers have taken a timid approach to cricket and matters on the field. if we are to earn the respect of nations we must be bold and even outspoken, while also backing up ourselves on the field. now i dont think what bashar said here is quite in the right direction, but on the field we definately need to show some more fight, guts and outspokendness. I think arjuna ranatunga is a good example..he took the fight to the opposition.

instead of being gentle lambs, lets behave like tigers.

This is good stuff... bashar is showing some backbone and getting media attention. Nobody used to care about what our captain's opinion before... definitely enjoying the limelight!!!

Great stuff from Bashar. I'm getting tired of people complaining at the absence of India and Pakistan, and I'm glad that it's our captain who spoke out against it. Now let's hope Bashar & co. beat England to make this WC even more exciting.

Well..nothing to hit out really. He said the fact..which every indians, pakistanis agreed to..even Rahul Dravid agreed. They didnt deserved to play in the super 8s. You cant expect to go to the super 8s even after loosing 2 matches out of 3!!

I think he was replying to the comments on indian loss being termed as a fluke. I think bashar's comment was right on merit. Indians and pakis are way below per this year.

You go tiger! Score some off field runs!

i think what bashar said was right cause he wasnt speaking on his behalf, but the teams behalf. the team performed well, better than india and pakistan. he didnt traget out inzamam or dravid so what he said was right.

also, i dont think what he said was his opinion, but hardcore fact. cause the people that are naggig and complaining about pak-ind's departure might as well call it the top ranking cup.
go bashar!!! make us proud

The writer of the article is just hyping it up. Probably didnt have a good article out in a while. Bashar said nothing too offensive. Loo at the headline - "They dont have the right to be in the Super 8's" Sheesh! Taking it completely out of context...

Bashar needs to hit out with his bat sometimes. He is becoming a burden to the team.
