“Chewing gum” does it really work?

The fact is “chewing gum” keeps you active and increases your concentration. Is this scientifically proven? We know that Steve Waugh likes chewing gum, Ricky Ponting likes chewing and spitting on his hands and how about Michael Clark, Smith, Shane Warne and others.. I am curious, what is the logic behind it and it would be interesting to find out what brand do they chew.

I've heard it improves your memory and concentration, but I also know chewing gum for too long can give you headache/jawache and in fact make concentration harder.

Chewing gum means: Strong minded, don't care attitude. Another way of saying is- if you chew gum then people think you are more of an american (taken from a film although there is little logic behind it).
