Default Was Pele really ALL THAT he is hyped up to be??

In the WC, I didn't see him shine so much, more so Rivelino (this is for you footballaholics don't post till you've thoroughly recapped your footie knowhow)....and he played in a league which is crap (brazil; weak defence, weak players, tricksters...)

Was he so good,

Maradona is the greatest ever in my opinion, followed by the Ronaldo if he wasn't injured.

he won 3 world cups. Was the main player in 1970, scored 5 goals in 1958. 62 got injured and 66was horribly marked. First player to score 1000 goals. That is a great record. and he was really good.
Is he a better player that maradona? Yes he is. Does Maradona have more skills than he does? Yes.
But i think Ronaldinho is better than both of them in terms of skills and by the time he ends his career he will be the greatest player ever.

He was all that and some. He was the black pearl for whom Football was invented. He is up there with Ali.

Yeah, and players from that weak leagues were world beaters year after year.

You can have your opinion. Many Welsh believe it was Ian Rush, no harm done.

oh to add to that he never acted like maradonna did most of the time (55 min acting, 10 min playing with hand, 5 min passing, 20min dogging).. Also when pele played there were no touch and foul rule either...

AFAIK, in his time Pele was the best ever. It's not his doing how the circumstances were under which he played. If he was fortunate to be, how come others weren't? Excessive physical play and violent tackling doesn't mean it's better football. Pele's international record speaks for themselves. Fans and critics alike have voted him as the greatest time and again.

I am a Brazil fan through and through...but pele being better than maradona...I cannot comprehend.

He is so overrated. I saw the full 1970 game; he was supposed to be in his peak that tournament; he barely did anything...crappy player.
Maradona is your man.

What is your motive here? When you can not comprehend something it is better not to talk about it. GOOGLE can get you so much info on him that you won't finish reading in a year. may be then you can comprehend.

Trying to instigate a fight? or trying to impose your weak ideas/thoughts on to others?

Maradona is a cheat! That simple fact alone will be enough for him not being the best footballer ever.
And like i sed Ronaldinho is better in skills than Maradona.
The reason why Pele is the greatest is because he was really skillful as well as a great sportsman

pele never made diving an integral part of his game, score with his hand, did a wide variety of performance enhancing AND recreational drugs, made going in and out of rehab joints a part of his lifestyle, got a liposuction only to get fat again, and then check back into yet another rehab center. pele also won 3 world cups and scored 1000 goals. Special 1 and Hatebreed are spot on. the few names dropped in the opening remarks couldn't mask those narcissistic, childish undertones.

Then how come Maradona was voted the greatest by the fans? But only a select band of fifa people chose pele??? Special???

Pele HAD NO WAY NEAR enough skills as Maradona.

Ronaldinho isn't better in skills; where does Ronaldhinhos skills take him in a match? Can he rip past defences???

Just like Amitabh Bacchan and sharukh khan voted best actors in the world. I think specialists will always know more than the avg Joe re there area of their speciality.

Well I guess you havent seen enough of Pele. And I do not know what u mean by Skills. He scored more goals than Maradona, prolly had more assists than him as well. Maather moddhe jonglir moto douranoi jodi skill hoito, Denilson would have been number 1 in the world.

Clearly You havent seen Ronaldinho play. the array of moves Ronaldino has is way way more than maradona. Does Maradona even have a signature move, see Ronaldinho's elastic move, Maradona can try for his entirelife, but wont succeed.

Pele v Maradona

This week Dr Sangha takes mild offence at the assertion Pele was the greatest living footballer.

Your article titled Pele Plays Down Brazil Bid dated May 18 2006 states in the final paragraph 'Pele is considered the greatest player in the history of the game.'

I was shocked to see your website which is clearly dated in 2006 to be so out-of-date - 20 years after Maradona 'rocked the world' and included your own prejudice 'British footballing nation' - that you can degrade the integrity of your website by stating such an ambiguous fact so absolutely.

It was clear that the writer of this article must also be British and for him I would especially like to request for the good of the worldwide footballing nation that read and rely on such media as these propaganda-flowing articles to please take your head out of your ***!

Even though Maradona has been outcast by the world, he took a shabby Argentina side all the way to two World Cup Finals (along with dominating all the way from midfield to finish, frequently from even deeper in the field) whereas Pele played for the best team-roster on paper that ever existed in the history of football along with the role of only having to finish as a striker that what had been placed in front of him on a "silver platter". I do not even carry the burden of accurate journalism on my shoulders as I am not a sports writer but I am still wise enough not to 'shoot myself in the foot' by clearly stating the obvious - Maradona dethroned Pele 20 years ago.

The writer is a disgrace to football because of one of the three following facts (or even perhaps all of them):

1) He is a 'gimp' of the governing bodies of soccer and the media who have tried to shun Maradona out from the limelight that rightfully belonged to him and give him the role of the 'scapegoat' due to a fear of public association with 'evil', as they attempt to mask their scam-ridden system (for example, does anybody from the 'corruption-free' Fifa governing body ever publicise or mention the Mexican referee who admitted to being paid-off to give Germany the penalty kick in the dying moments of the 1990 World Cup Final that robbed the World Cup from Argentina's hands?). All this occurring simultaneously as Pele and Fifa share their symbiotic relationship unconditional worshipping and place this 'pet' in the front-line as Fifa's ambassador of this sport:

2) The so-called 'writer' is unable to appreciate and differentiate talent on the field from shortcomings in a man that are off the field and possibly..

3) The writer of this article is none other than the man (which I hesitatingly call him) Pele himself (who has never shied away from tooting his own horn).

I ask for the good of football for your website to take action at the minimalist of levels by at least altering the last statement in this article; there should be penalties for stating fiction as fact since this was clearly not an opinion of the author; according to him this ridiculous inference is fact: Last time I checked, Maradona had won the worldwide internet voting as the best player in the world at the turn of the millennium.

I would like to conclude by offering my knowledge of this great sport to your informationally challenged writer or perhaps even replacing him.
Dr. Sangha

I agree with Dr Sangha. Yes , I do. To the person who commented on the use of drugs by Maradona to enhance his performance...please note: Maradona declared his genius on the pitch way before he started using cocaine. As Gary Lineker said on TV, Diego Maradona's football skills are head and shoulders above any footballer's, ever. I also, agree with the Dr on Pele. Unfortunately, he's become Fifa's pet, el Nene lindo de Brazil. Shame. *All comments are anonymous

Too young to really make a judgement, but my uncle (a die hard footie fan) used to tell me Maradona was better skillwise, but having met Pele in Kolkata as a young lad, Pele will always be his hero

Pele is not just the greatest footballer, but also football personality. That's more than I can say for Maradona.
